@@breaker3269 for me, my brother had it, owed me money, so I said give me the jeep. Really mot much thought behind it lol. But, they are light, front and rear solid axles with a bulletproof 4.0L inline six that is pretty torquey and great for crawling. Plus parts are super jeep

I love the XJ. I bought a brand new one in the 80s. I ordered it without AC, with MT and vent side windows for about $15k. Limited slip rear also. 1st wife got that one and then I got another, a Limited with auto. Gave it to my son and he put a wicked camo paint job on it. Love my Bronco BD I have now.

As an overlander myself, I will always be more into your overlanding adventures with the Bronco. I love seeing the places you go, the overland experience you share, and the pure serenity of that. Having said that, it’ll be neat to see how this thing turns out too and what trails you hit with this, but I hope you keep your Bronco adventures as the main theme of the channel🙂🤞🏼 I love your channel and you quite honestly convinced me to consider getting a Bronco myself, and I truly appreciate your insight into how to optimize it. Keep up the great work David and thanks for all the work you put into your videos! P.S. For your beater rig you should get an old beater Bronco! 😎

Wow, you read my mind. I am also looking for an XJ. Not a Bronco replacement but to enhance the experience. None of my Son's have a narrow wheelbase vehicle that we can go out together and wheel. Many years ago I built a 69 Jeepster Commando. It was awesome. But, I don't have it anymore. I'm excited to see what you do with it.

The first thing I do when I get a new Cherokee is make sure it has a fan shroud on the mechanical fan and install a manual override switch for the electronic fan. Those two things along with a up to date cooling system (good water pump/thermostat, new radiator, hoses, clean coolant) will keep it from overheating especially on the hot days. Also carry a spare crankshaft position sensor. Overheating from a poorly maintained cooling system and stalling due to a bad crank sensor are the two main things that have left me stranded with XJ's. I'm on my fifth XJ now.

Iron Rock Off-road makes solid products, I wouldn't be worried about stuff from them as long as it's installed correctly. For a tired I6 engine I'd look at some new injectors from K suspension and maybe the upgraded cables. Those short control arms are deff maxed out. If you're looking to do a budget build there is soooo much information on Google specifically Jeep XJ junkyard upgrades has a bunch of cool stuff you can toss in it. Love the channel, keep up the great work from a fellow vet and lifelong XJ owner!

As new members to your channel and patreon, we love your overlanding and camping trips. I even went out to Owyhee Reservoir after meeting up with Will to drive some of the trails you did. BUT I would love to see the build of this jeep and especially the rock crawling. At 60 years old, I’m trying to understand suspension builds and the mechanical part of our vehicles so this build would be great for us. Look forward to your future videos and maybe a trip with ya.

Nothing wrong with a beater, but then whats the point of the Bronco if you can just trailer your beater everywhere? Even your beater has space inside for a ground tent or hammock if you're away from your tow rig. Seems a little redundant from my perspective as a minimalist, but I also doubt I'm your target with this. So if it brings in more views for the channel, thats awesome for you.

I'd definitely be intersted in seeing more of this build and future content. I also have a "main" driver (2023 4Runner OR) and an older 2004 Jeep WJ. The WJ has Iron Rock Offroad suspension and they're a pretty solid/known company, so your suspension components could certainly be worse ;) Seems like your other issues like springs, shocks and other maintenance issues can easily be solved within your budget. The hard part is going to be sticking with that budget though, lol.
