Your fifteen convincing reasons to read Our Mutual Friend are not too many to describe this complex and intricate book. As you went along I was visualizing the scenes my previous readings have concocted in my mind for the various characters, plots, skullduggery, and romantic episodes this novel creates so well! Thank you, Katie for your keen observations and convincing arguments to reread this book!

I read Our Mutual Friend in May. It instantly became my favorite Dickens and one of my favorite books of the year

I' decided some Dickens this year, (hadn't read him since childhood). This is the fifth Dickens I've read so far (now early in Book 2). And OMF really stands out. I was enticed to read because although it is less known, it seems to be a favorite among Dickens fans. Great plot, great and memorable characters, great descriptions of 19th century London, stinging social criticism and satire of the class system and respectability. It feels that everything I like about Dickens is there. It is just superb,. Tolstoy is my favorite novelist and I noticed in Anna Karenina he references OMF which would have come out a little less than a decade before).

I just pulled this off the shelf to start today and i can not believe we're on the last completed novel. What a couple of years! This is probably my second favourite Dickens after Bleak House (which is my favourite book ever) but i haven't read it in a while, so im really looking forward to it!

Looking forward to this discussion! Read our mutual friend back in Jan, and it quickly replaced Pride and Prejudice as my favorite single book!

So excited to re-read this. It became my favourite Dickens when I read it in Phang Nga Thailand in 2014 during a particularly difficult year for me personally. I struggled to understand why it resonated so much with me & during this wonderful Dickens read along it's been usurped firstly by Bleak House & then just recently by Great Expectations. However I must admit I have a gut feeling (great expectation!) that it's going to return to the top of the pile once I've re-read it. Which will probably be in a couple of weeks because first I have to read Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, my first ever Austen as part of your Austen in July. Wicked!

I am in the early stages of the novel but have come across most of the characters you mention. Certainly Dickens loved the city from the top of St Paul's to the bottom of the Thames and fashioned an unrivalled cast of dramatis personae from its denizens.

Well done, kid. You've convinced me to take a serious run at OMF. Your discussion of the Thames and London (central to MY favorite novel, Great Expectations, too) has also dovetailed with my recent fascinations with rivers and how important they are to the more complex and enduring human cultures. The nature of money and the evil forms it takes and how it poisons people have LONG held my attention. You made your case. Hope to engage over on Patreon.

Can’t believe we’re almost finished! It’s been wonderful. I will be reading this in August because of JAJ. I’m looking forward to the mysteries, the gothic and grim , and the humour. I’ll be watching your videos too. They were helpful reading Bleak House. Thanks again for all your hard work.

I know, it's been such a long and fun project, and it's so weird to think it'll be finished! I remember when I started thinking, autumn 2024 seems so far away 😅

Can confirm, I read Our Mutual Friend two years ago based on Katie's recommendation and it's one of my favourite Dickens so far. Very complex plot and characters. And I can see myself wanting to reread it in the future to pick up on things I missed or forgot.

I read this book after watching an older Dickens focused videos of yours, and it quickly became a favorite. I'm not quite ready for a reread yet but I do plan to re-read in a year or two.
