What a gift you are sir. Why is it so hard for other math teachers to teach like this? You make it so clear and straight forward and easy.

@Tobias Howells I was just kidding, Eddie was obviously not 12, that was the joke, but my point is that there are are more than one answer depending on differentiation and accepted variables. Proportion could be equivalent. Or not. I'm confused too ;) But it's fun to think about;)

I've never heard the term pronumeral before, to collectively refer to constants and variables. I've always called them variables, until it is necessary to clarify as constants. Seems like it would help out, when we are talking about a letter in math that might be a constant, or might be a variable, and whichever it is, is unspecified.

I can just tell you.. to put it plainly, if you multiply nothing, you have a whole lot of nothing.. if you're dividing something by nothing, you're not doing anything. therefore, no math. you're literally not doing anything at this point.
@carultch

Consider (x^2 - 4)/(x - 2). Try plugging in x=2 for this expression, and you can't do it directly, as you'll have both a top and bottom of 0. However, try plugging in any number immediately next to 2, as close to 2 as you can. You'll see that it will get very close to the answer of 4. And if you factor the top, you can cancel out (x - 2), and just be left with x + 2. This seems to imply that 0/0 = 4. But this is only true for this particular approach to 0/0. If you approach it another way, you could get 0/0 = any other finite number. Or even infinite, if you approach the bottom faster than the top. So the answer to 0/0 in general, is not enough information. Dividing by zero is undefined, because it is not possible to define and maintain consistency with all existing rules of mathematics.

This is great, you have a terrific energy, but have you thought that you could elicit a lot more of the information from your students? And instead of beginning with all the theory and nomenclature around algebra, you could just plunge into your initial problem ("I am x times the age of my son + y" or whatever it was) and together with students work out how you might solve such a problem. This way they get to discover algebra themselves. Then you can talk about pronumerals, etc. (the boring stuff). Cheers!

Mr. Woo, I saw the video about your children’s allergies and other conditions that are negatively affecting their and your family life. In the US we have a doctor (who is being mocked and laughed at) who wrote books and has proven many years ago that many allergies along with hundreds of diseases, are caused by deficiencies of certain vitamins. The doctor’s name is Joel Wallach. Watch his KZitem videos, informative. I have personally met someone who has been taking the vitamin and mineral formulas that not only managed but with consistent supplementation, eradicated serious conditions; in his case arthritis. I encourage you to listen to his lectures; you will not regret the time you will spend on doing so. Thanks for respecting the kids you are teaching; you have already made an enormous difference in many people’s lives that you don’t even realize.
