This series of lectures is one of the most interesting things on this website right now. I’m so glad I was directed here by Let’s Talk Religion’s video on Abraham Abulafia. I’ve been fascinated by religion and the esoteric for years, but I’ve always felt that I didn’t know enough about Judaism, let alone Jewish mysticism, and your channel has really scratched that itch!
@MrMikkyn

I discovered this channel from Abraham Abulafia as well. I just finished reading the whole Tanakh, and now I’m jumping straight into Kabbalah, Merkabah and Hekhalot, literature.

No one really has an agenda for anyone else’s life. Look around and you’ll see most people don’t have much of one for their own, so don’t be fooled. God help us all.

@@animula6908 I grew up going to church, and was taught that I had to behave a certain way and believe in certain things in order to avoid eternal damnation. I was not allowed to explore other religion, spirituality, or belief systems outside of Christianity. Much of this childhood conditioning was centered on convincing me that as a young woman I should submit to the will of white, Christian men. Just because they're white Christian men. These days, many of these white Christian men have embraced fascism, which is all about pushing one person's agenda onto everybody else's life. I've also run into lots of Tarot card readers on KZitem who have been pushing the fascist, pro-Trump, QAnon agenda - essentially using spirituality, conspiracy theories, and fear of blood libel to convince people to support a fascist dictator. There are plenty of wolves with private agendas who target the sheep who will fall for it.

I always think to myself, why would people take so much care to write so much stuff over thousands of years about something that doesn't work or isn't true on some level. These are people just like me with everyday concerns and common sense. So I have to think there is a reality and a power there, otherwise, why bother.

40:59 I would indeed like to hear about this anti-colonial reading of Jeshua's exorcism of demons into pigs! And I am glad you mentioned Superman - when you began to speak about Hanina Ben Dosa flying around, all I could wonder is if these miracle-worker stories were early wish-fulfillment superhero narratives that we have misinterpreted as being in earnest.

The demon bowls remind me of the more modern practice of "secret keepers". Basically a closed form is made from clay and you whisper your secret or worry into it. The worry stays in the form, so that you don't have to carry it. I guess the difference is the secret keepers are filled when you make them, whereas the demon bowls are not. Secret keepers are couched as a form of meditation or maybe a therapeutic practice...but in a different place or time, maybe they'd be considered magical. As you say, the boundaries between these things arent as clear as we'd like to think.

Then it was explained to me that the difference between black magic and white magus is intention. Is it service to self or harmful to another? Or is it service to others and for the greater good.

I believe a proper way to insulate the terms "Magic" and "Religion" is to consider "religious magic" as how one Practices their religion, i.e. rituals, fetishes, spells\prayers etc... This considers Magic integral to religion, as all religions are in some ways practiced - but there is more to religion than simply how the faith is channelled corporeally.

A lot of it seems to have to do with standing apart. I think about for example the Amish. They stand apart because they don't act like those around them and as a result everyone tends to consider them very religious (even if some of them supposedly rarely if ever read the Bible, their standing apart makes others consider them differently)

My question is, what value does the word magic have if its application is excluded from certain core religious doctrine? If we look at a single ritual, the blood ritual of alter purification, one has to ask the question, how is this not magic. Then on top of that how is sacrifice (by fire) to the deity of the temple also not magic.

I utterly disagree with what is witchcraft and what is religion and who decides what is what,and Moses with the description of his staff was a wizard. The trouble with magicians is that they do their own will and expand their ego. one could say that the difference between a prophet and a magician is that the magician does his own will and the prophet does God's will

Question: you say "condemnation is always proof of a practice." This immediately makes me think of the "satanic panic" of the 80s and 90s, and the belief that so-called Satanists were practicing child sacrifice, among other things. I think this was something that was condemned, but there is not real evidence that it was a real practice. Is that just an exception to the rule?
