John, this post from yourself is now 2 years old as i send this comment. its incredible this is so current and will remain so for many years as engineers get a grip of how different ASHP operate. What a great training tool and for those who are interested and care about operating efficiency......it's gold Thanks very much

Many thnaks for your kind comments Douglas. I'm aware that I should do some more. Though some is good, there is a whole lot of confusing and misleading info on the web... no wonder many people are confused.

John - very helpful - thank you. I prefer to use wire rather than WIFI. What are the distance limits for wiring in the DS18B20 temperature sensors using cat 5 cable? will it be ok with say 20 or 30 meters between the sensor and the measuring equipment - EmonTX etc? Thanks

Unfortunately long runs are not good for ds18b20. A single sensor on a device might be ok, but I guess you want several. Problem seems to manifest as random occasional way-off readings that can be filtered out....to a point. Screened cable may not help. It might be a matter of experimenting. Good thing is.. being digital, if you get readings, they are accurate...

John, good video and can we use this tech to understand / sort out why so many appear to have excessive HP cycling in spring/autumn. Even Trystan says he can only get down to 40% of nameplate kw when the datasheet says it should go much lower. Can we monitor and nail what a HP is seeing from its data which tells it to cycle when its not the home thermostat. I'm suspicious some of them don't like a low water flow minus return temp delta so might be using this but that's easily fixed with less flow in spring/autumn. Insufficient data to determine.

Hi Steve. Solving problems can be difficult. e.g. spending money changing some plumbing, and its hard to actually know what the advantage will be. Firstly, the % 'turn down' is often quoted in winter. In cold weather the output can go quite low. BUT in milder weather, when you want minimum output, unfortunately the turn-down is less. Its a matter of looking at minimum output at say 10C outside and above. So, will this monitor solve your problem? Hard to answer. I doubt if it will be as easy as simply adjusting settings. Important to know if your flow rate is enough. On low load, the dt should be low. do you have zones off? Are the emitters big enough for the size of heat pump? Complicated isnt it?

Hi John, I've got an issue with my ASHP, the pressure gauge seems to not drop. Pressure was at 2.5bar, I was advised to release some pressure from the system so I dropped it to 1.4bar and the pressure overnight has increased to 1.7bar. Any ideas?

There will be an expansion vessel (usually red) to take up the expansion as the water heats up. This has a rubber diaphragm in it and a normal car/bike shreader valve to pressurise. I wonder if this has failed. Is this a new symptom you report? is it a new install? Other thoughts... there is a braided silver filling loop. could both valves, on each end of this pipe, be leaking mains water slightly into your system. You should have a 3bar pressure relief valve should the pressure get that high.

@@johncantor4056 hi John, thanks, I've tried seeing if I can dm you on twitter? Can't seem to! It's a new install, new issue but did have an issue with too much pressure recently (fault code) due to too much air after a leak was repaired. Expansion vessel is white and sounds hollow when tapped. Any ideas?

Hi John, pressure now seems to be dropping, is at 0.6? I topped it up this morning. Thanks

@@muttyhc Good morning. This isnt really the place for issues like yours. You may have a pressure vessel issue. I guess you could look at some videos to help you understand it or you may need an expert to have a look. Good luck with it.

John, Quite a low ground temperature for ground source

That is not untypical for mid winter. To ground at just below zero and back at +3. Quite often they can go sub zero (to ground) during a late winter cold snap.
