An important point was missed. The GWP effect is when there is a LEAK! not while it's in the system. When & IF it leaks when there is a fire, it will propagate the fire!!! Also, very important flammable A2L (R32 or R454B) might and could INTERNALY explode. This is true if the vacuum process (must be higher than R410A an A1 class non-flammable, non-explosive class) is not perfect (presence of moisture/oxygen) as when compressed the temperature could reach the lubricating OIL ignition temperature, and in the presence of flammable refrigerant (any A2, A2L or worse A3) the oil might ignite the flammable refrigerants! This possibility will not exist if A1 class non-flammable refrigerants are present. Neil Afram Director of Space Air Ltd. distributor of AC & Heat Pumps since 1980.

@averyalexander2303
Ай бұрын
Nope, the EPA still regulates them the same as R22, R410a, etc and probably always will. Even though the R1234yf used in new cars supposedly has a GWP of less than 1, it still has to be recovered. Unless the refrigerant is used as a propellant or some other application- then you can release as much as you want of whatever refrigerant you want. I kid you not, the exact same R134a that we had to ban from using in cars because it's soooooo evil is still sold as compressed "air" to spray directly into the atmosphere! Look up "r134a duster" if you don't believe me. A single can of that stuff holds about as much refrigerant as most newer cars, but somehow it's okay to release.

How about one important piece of info? HOW MANY BTU / POUND IE: WORK, Does the refrigerant move? As compared to r410a, r290, r134a, R 717???? That is what I want to know. I mean- if it does twice the work, you could use half as much. It would have to have OVER TWICE the GWP to be worse than the other refrigerant. SOO... What are those numbers??
@averyalexander2303
Ай бұрын
R717 is 253 BTU/lb, R32 is 163 BTU/lb, R290 is 144 BTU/lb, R454b is 136 BTU/lb, R410a is 117 BTU/lb, R22 is 100 BTU/lb, R134a is 93 BTU/lb, and R12 is 71 BTU/lb. But why does it matter? A higher latent heat of vaporization by itself doesn't necessarily make a refrigerant better or more energy efficient and can sometimes have the opposite effect. And in certain situations, moving too much heat with too little refrigerant flow can cause excessively high discharge temperatures and other issues. The thermal conductivity of the refrigerant, its critical temperature, its expansion ratio as the liquid boils into a gas, the compression ratio the refrigerant runs at in whatever application its used for, the equipment itself, how the refrigerant and oil interact under different conditions, and a million other factors effect overall performance and efficiency. And a smaller charge weight may not mean the refrigerant is better or more efficient and it may not even mean there's less volume in the system, it might simply mean the liquid is less dense.

H a Voz went to United refrigeration to buy 10 pounds of R1234YN $650 for 10 pounds. I don’t think these are the future in my opinion. The chemical game is still being played every day but this is the last part of the chemical game HFO’s, so the only real true refrigerant still out there are 290 or 717 and R7 44 CO2, I think CO2 is a viable future now with Copeland’s DVI system and you could use regular scroll compressors that are designed for it. I think that’s going to be the future in air-conditioning and refrigeration ammonia used for industrial use and when you get ammonia leak you know how that goes so I think CO2 right now is the way to go once a perfect it.

You keep forgetting to mention the safety standards that have been around since 1928 when the 1st refrigerant was invented and WHY? = SAFETY 1st ! Hence A1 class (as certified by ASHRAE34 & ISO817 which you chose to ignore!). By the way, R454B is not more efficient than R410A!. FACTS: Refrigerant R454B is an A2L flammable, can be explosive, semi-toxic and hence requires EXTRA safety (ventilation, alarm, maintenance, engineers qualification, restricted use, etc.) measures (again you chose to ignore) So, you can not compare with R410A which is non-flammable, non-explosive, non-toxic, no extra safety measures or engineers certification or tools. Simple, honest and unambiguous!. You should not treat our industry (including the press) or our customers with ignorance just because you are a big conglomerate that used to be looked up to but now ran by bean counters. Neil Afram

@@andyvitz just because something is flammable doesn't mean it turns into a BOMB when it reaches flash point. There'll be safety features and all kinds of things to prevent those high pressures/temps. Also you need a ton of ignition energy plus a very narrow stoichiometric ratio of fuel/air to ignite 454b. It's not as simple as "compressor get hot, go boom". There's been a bunch of refrigerators and freezers with r290 and r600a (propane and isobutane) that have caught fire or exploded but those are hydrocarbon refrigerants and they're extremely explosive. Seems like techs are leaving appliances in service with failed components, so that'd be a procedural error and not a random refrigerator explosion
