Who'd ever think that the sight of voracious Indian Runner Ducks eating a pale of slugs with the gentle voice of Danish narration would be so soothing?

Ducks are wonderful. Low maintenance, get rid of pests in the vegetable garden and in paddy fields, don't mind dirty water, don't care if it rains, eat a whole range of foods and ever so good at laying eggs.

Ive read from ppl who are serious about raising them that they are NOT easy to raise. Esp these 'runner' types. They are very specific about their environs, need constant companionship, need a wide range of foods, and constant FRESH water, and other things...

@@youtmeme mine are not for commercial purposes so I keep 8 females, change water every few days (more often if it gets too messy with bits of food, a water nipple would probably eliminate this problem), collect their eggs, let them run around and swim, have a small shelter when it rains, feed half food scraps and half mixed grain. Every so often crush up a multimineral into their water. Clean the shelter every week or so. When they get sick charcoal water is provided. A commercial grower should be able to provide more directions on farming them densely. They might need electrical fencing and more sheltered areas if there are predators or to keep them in one area. Indian runners are quite good at foraging so they might not need so much feed, depending on how rich their environment is. I find they are quite hardy and need little other care. The commercial grower would want to maximize egg production or meat would optimize the conditions and feed much more than I care to do.

@@kynchan3332 Are yours eating slugs? I bought 3 of them and put them in my vegetable garden. I was told that they eat the slugs and don't hurt the plants. Well they were scared and only discovered a small part of the garden, but all the veggies diseapperad from there.... Some days later I cough a slug and put it in front of them but they didn't bother with it... It is a bit upsetting. I was also told that their meat is not tasty. Any opinion?

@@HeBorka Mine eat slugs, insects, tender grasses, small amount of brassicas and can find most of their foods foraging in the warm seasons. I use much more grain and scraps during the cool season when it is harder for them to forage. (The ducks born on my farm have got use to eating slugs and snails etc. But the ones bought from farms used to being fed 100% grain have a slight problem adjusting without seeing other ducks eating slugs). Some of the ducks like the brassicas on the ground. High raised beds (to protect my back) tends to keep the ducks off the vegetables and so does the pest netting/mesh. Overall I find, the duck meat tends to be more gamey when they forage and milder in flavour when fed grain, same with the eggs. (For duck meat I prefer the ones with plenty of fat under the skin, like the pekin, than the leaner varieties. The best flavour is in the fat and skin when roasted. I like ducks that have partially foraged and been half supplemented with grain for the balance of flavour. A good proportion of my eggs are salted (eggs placed in brine for a month or two) to really bring out the extreme richness of the yolk (white gets a salty and sour taste though) and the slight gamey flavour of the whole is lost. With the fresh eggs I use them like chicken ones for baking and making noodles, result is richer than the chicken egg version.)

@@kynchan3332 I did think of them not having any example of eating slugs therefor not knowing what to do. ( I saw the same with chickens.) Do you have any suggestions how to teach them? And if they learn it, will they look for it in the garden or do I have to keep collecting the slugs? For me the purpose of them was that they will hunt for it so I could got rid off the task.

Runner ducks are used in vineyards and other crops. Great pest eradicators. That is for sure and nobody needs to go out looking for them at night only these guys do a great job at it. Keep the balance going. Spanish slugs are voracious eaters.

My runner ducks (aka box ducks) rid my garden of snails, grasshoppers, et al while laying eggs too. However, ducks will eat some salad greens and comfrey if allowed.

interesting. would chickens eat them? but what about later poop? arent there slug eggs survived and go back to earth? in Estonia they just burn them, they claim nobody eats them. but then could feed them to ducks?

Chickens aren't too keen on Spanish slugs not many animals are (even hedgehogs). The chickens will eat the eggs, though, and perhaps some of the really small ones, but Spanish slugs can move very fast (for a slug) and even if there are no eggs left in your garden after winter, they will invade from surrounding fields and gardens in no time. Runner ducks really are the way to go, and the only thing that comes out of the other end is poop.
