This species has been instrumental in helping create the current ( Sept - October 2023) critical condition of Lough Neagh with regard to the cyanobacterial blooms. Clearer water allowing more light to penetrate, and the record summer water temperatures have combined to drive the so called 'algal bloom' to such a degree that in parts of the Lough the water has the consistency of a thick green stew. The fish, eels and others are starving because the mussels have filtered out all their food, and the cyanobacteria are causing de-oxygenation and their breakdown is releasing toxins. Illness has been observed in humans in contact with the water, and dogs and water-fowl have died.
