I've been a fan of this band for some time ever since I originally heard this song back in 2014. However when their full length album "Atlas" eventually came out in 2016 with this song on it, I noticed that it had been re-worked slightly for said album. Whilst the changes aren't drastic, they are noticeable if you're already familiar with the previous version of the song.
The original version of this song appears to only be available on the official music video of "Through The Smoke" as this version appears to have not been released on any digital platforms as a standalone single when it first released.
To me there are elements of the original version that I enjoy as much as, if not more than, the final version. So I wanted to find a way to preserve it online so there was an alternative option to having to just use the music video only, as it can be a little cumbersome to wade around the beginning and ending skit elements (not that they're not amusing of course).
Please note: I had to do some minor editing to this song in Audacity in order to edit around the original skit sections on the music video. This only affects the ending breakdown where I had to edit around a fade out into narration. To do this I had to do some copy paste riff extensions and create my own manual fade out, as such the ending 20 seconds or so may not be entirely accurate to the original song. I have done my best to match it as closely as possible but some minor mistakes may be left, apologies in advance.
For those interested here are some differences that I've spotted between both versions of the song:
- Each version has different production. Could be argued that the original version is more "pre-production" sounding as it less organic sounding by comparison.
- Different vocal take on each version: The final version has re-recorded vocals that sound notably different from this version. The original version has a more "Randy Blythe" style low-mid range approach, where as the re-recorded vocals are more standard mid range. Although potentially it may be a change in vocal effects rather than re-recording, not 100%.
- Instrumentals are very much identical, may be minor differences but I'm not skilled enough in audio / composition to notice anything major. Only thing different are things like tones, amps (production) etc.
- Only major notable change in composition is the addition of 2 screams in the ending breakdown on the final version that aren't present on the original version.
