The atoms that make up molecules perform oscillatory motions with frequencies specific to molecular structure. The unprecedented control of light-afforded by modern lasers-provides access to these vibrations on the natural, femtosecond, time scale of their individual oscillations. In fact, (in electric-)field-resolved spectroscopy (FRS) we excite molecular vibrations with few-cycle infrared pulses and "listen" to their complex response in the optical domain. At the Laboratory of Attosecond Physics, we develop FRS towards the fundamental sensitivity limits set by the quantum nature of light. Much like musicians can discern a single detuned instrument in a symphonic orchestra, with FRS, our biomedical collaborators hope to detect early indicators of health deterioration in biofluids.
