Comparing the new iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple's best camera you can currently buy on any iPhone (better than the regular iPhone 12 Pro), versus the Sony a7r4, my professional workhorse camera.
To make things fairer for the iPhone (Apple outputs processed JPEG's vs Sony's RAW output), I tweaked the Sony files in Adobe Camera Raw to match as closely to Apple iPhone's images as possible. Specifically white balance, vibrancy, shadows and highlights only. I did not manipulate the iPhone images in anyway, so as to give it the best, untouched pixels possible for comparison.
Of course, the Sony does not replace the iPhone for majority of professional work. It's still missing a lot of creative control both in camera and in post. But for the majority of camera consumers, who only output their photos on social media, and only want minimal creative manipulation, the gap has become so close.
This was filmed on 16th Nov 2020, before Apple's ProRAW has been publicly released outside of Beta. It will be interesting to do this comparison again when ProRAW is out, as I will be able to match them much more closely!
