For the average person, really, the newer model iPhones are all that’s needed for incredible results. Particularly if they learn its features and build some post processing skills. I remember when we shot film and crossed our fingers we got two or three good ones …

It is really funny when smartphone shooters begin shouting "but smartphone image is sharper, it is better!".. Oh boy. That sharpness in all of smartphones, even flagships are so disgusting and bad and you can't get rid of it. I use Open Camera for example on my Samsung and turned off every "enhancement" available, noise reduction, edge sharpening. Difference is night and day. You can always add sharpening in post, even a bit of it goes long way. Of course not even 1500 dolalr phones can compete even with 10 year old DSLR. Not even close. But sensors came long way in smartphones I can tell you that. Biggest problem is.. post processing. Those who program it on smartphones need to be fired.

I have the 15 pro max and it is super solid but the noise really gets to me sometimes. I run with this rule, if it's in the summer, then iphone for vlogging. No need for ND Filters and all that. Indoor though or winter time, run with my Canon as much as possible. But at the end of the day, whatever is easiest will win and the iPhone does that well. I don't want to miss a moment on a travel vlog because I was setting exposure....I also still enjoy buttery smooth shots.

I am a beginner researching about smartphone filmmaking using the iPhone 15 ProMax (smartphone lenses 1.33x & 1.55x). I watched tutorial videos covering the iPhone 15 ProMax use with the filmic pro app (now includes ProRes Apple Log). Have you tested 1.33x and/or 1.55x lenses on the iPhone 15 ProMax using Filmic Pro or the Blackmagic camera app? What are your thoughts in the results post production or in general relating to the topic discussed in this video as far as digital noise goes?
@PaulHeimlund

I haven't tried those lenses. As far as digital noise goes, you need to film in ProRes to have the cleanest image possible, and using the plugin Texture Pop found in DaVinci Resolve works really well to get a more cinematic look :)

Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is insanely good! However, there is a clear difference, pixel peeping or not. I’ve been working on how to “fix” this and I believe I’ve found a great way in improving the image quality on the iPhone. Will post results next week ;)

I enjoyed the comparison. As an iPhone 15 Pro Max user, I have been amazed with the quality of both still shots and videos. May I offer you a YT tip? The “music” playing while you’re talking makes it harder to understand you (even on an iPhone 15 Pro Max😊). It’s similar to the noise in the images. May I suggest you kill the music except for intros and transitions? Thanks!

Is the crop because of image stabilation?
@PaulHeimlund
3 ай бұрын
Yes ;)
@qetzyl9911
6 ай бұрын
My guess is that the crop on the iPhone app is due to the video stabilization feature. Some phones crop the video to have a "wiggle room" on the edges for stabilizing the shot
@PaulHeimlund
6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I’ve come to that conclusion as well. On the BlackMagic camera app you have 3 different strengths of stabilizing and I guess when filming that day it was set to Normal stabilizing, hence a lower crop compared to the iPhone built in stabilization.

It's a shame there is no way to get raw data out of the iPhone sensor. And what I mean by that, is raw data BEFORE the sharpening process. It feels like the iPhone sharpens the image as part of the sensor pipeline. It gives an artificial look the reminds me of gopros or other cheap action cameras. It's too bad both sharpness and noise reduction aren't more configurable on the iPhone. I do like your DaVinci Resolve trick though!
@PaulHeimlund
11 ай бұрын
Would be great to have that option! Dunno if it sharpens it in the pipeline, or if it comes down to the sensor size, just like the drones and action cameras you mention. I’d love to see a bigger sensor on future iPhones. I think it’s coming, even though the phones will get a bit bulkier ;) Glad you liked my DaVinci trick! Happy halloween! 🎃 💀👻

true and not true. GH6 is better, indeed, but... who cares? iphone is for many, to take a memory from a family event, vacation, wedding, etc etc. GH5/6 are pro , you could make a movie with them. But, then , the movie would be viewed probably on the phone or tablet, in small number of cases on large tv. Will anybody zoom in to see particular pixel ? I doubt. Will anybody care about the noise on the water? Most don't even know what we are talking about. Scientific footage, where quality is needed might be done with pro camera, both stills and video, but YT vloging or anything else.... most will not even notice. Sound might be more important.
