Agreed with most of what you said. I’m a long time iPhone user and have owned almost every generation, I upgrade every year, currently rockin the 15 Pro. The 16 series is completely underwhelming in my opinion, I was actually pissed off when watching the Apple event online. The camera BUTTON is a total useless gimmick, just like the Dynamic Eyesore has always been. I personally think the only reason the iPhone has the Dynamic Eyesore is so people looking at your phone’s screen will know it’s an iPhone and not an Android device. Apple keeps pissing me off as they are really dropping the ball on the tech and feature side of things, no USBC for years so Apple could make more money from selling the Lightning cable itself and also licensing the lighting cable to third party vendors. The lack of Dark Mode for year’s, the lack of Always On Display for years and now only available for the Pro models only, and 60hz for the non-Pro models is just insane, I could go on with more reasons I’ve become unhappy with Apple over the years but I’ll digress. Anyhow, the introduction of the 16 series has convinced me I need to stop being an iPhone sheep. I’m now waiting to purchase the soon to be released Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. Thanks for your well done video Alex.

Hi there, couldn't agree more about the aesthetics importance and how that is used to make sure people know it's an iPhone. I also can't believe we don't have split screen. Even if it was an 'optional' feature, I think a lot of customers (like me) would appreciate having two apps in one screen. Have a great week ahead!

Don't know man... On the iPhone 16 they are actually encouraging landscape for Vision Pro friendly videos so this placement feels weird to me. In portrait orientation I'd say it would be best to use the screen as the other hand is free anyway

About the shutter button placement. I think that Apple tried to make some tradeoff between horizontal and vertical use of the phone. Many content creators (Tik Tok mainly) actually will use it to record vertically and will try single hand navigating through the camera options. So using just the thumb could be easier with further from the corner button placement.
@AlexGTech

I kinda see the point but realistically reaching to the side and fiddling with a sliding action would probably ruin the whole video recording experience. Typically you want the video stable and if streaming, you probably want to pay attention to the comments, etc rather than fiddling with settings, but I don’t know, maybe it’s my age 🤣 I personally deleted TikTok and dislike recording in portrait mode

I don’t think they rushed the camera button, they tried to make it useable in both portrait and landscape which meant they have to compromise on the position. I agree with you though, they should have focused on landscape photography and positioned the button further down. People would have complained that it was “too low and can’t use it for portrait photography” but I mean there’s still the on screen controls.
@AlexGTech

yeah, the double half pressing to get the controls feels more cumbersome than on-screen controls. Weird move and I look forward to see what 3rd party apps do with it, but it's not the first time we see this. Dynamic island and Action button was the same story. Not many useful things came out of either. I tried using Siri shortcuts and everything to customise the action button, in the end it's just my camera button now 😅
@The.JZA.

@@AlexGTech Well are you expecting it to be life changing? It’s a camera button.. it allows you to open the camera quickly, half press to lock focus (which I think is coming in an update) and quickly zoom in and out. I think those are the core features and then the extra double click and settings changes etc are a bit gimmicky and unnecessary but some people will love it and if Apple did less with the button then people would complain that they didn’t do enough with it. People will always find something to complain about but at the end of the day it’s a useful button to open camera and snap a pic quickly and it’s better to have it than not.

@@AlexGTech It is not right that you dump on a feature that you have given a few days to try out and that will add value in the coming months with Visual Intelligence and third-party app support. If you have seen the interviews, you will know that Apple spent years researching this control, representing their first step on haptic buttons and a significant engineering achievement. Sadly, techies are now dismissing people's hard work. YT creators also dismissed the Action Button, which is now one of my favourite features, and I suspect they are yet again wrong. I understand that change is hard for some people and that its placement may not be perfect for everyone, but you can only please some people, some of the time, and creators never, it seems.

From 14Pro to 15Pro, Apple made it smaller and lighter. As a 13 mini user, I was really looking forward Apple would do the same on the 16Pro. Sadly for me, they went bigger instead while there's still the bigger Max model in the line up. I guess I'm gonna hold on to my 13 mini for a while. And I agree the camera control is not in the optimal location. I think a camera style grip case would give it more of a traditional camera handling feel.

Yes, they say, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and that’s how I perceive AI. Apple is gradually implementing this feature, as they understand it could be a long-term endeavour. Of course, they could have paid Google for access to Gemini AI, as Samsung did, for marketing and bragging rights, but thankfully, Apple has greater foresight and realised that long-term investing, even if it upsets YT creators with a slow rollout, is the key to success.

I think Apple will take another 3 years to move the camera control to the correct location in an iterative fashion alongside pushing people to use it by slowly removing software controls for camera. Nowadays, even upgrading every two years is not worth it, especially on the Apple side. If you're coming from an S22U to an S24U, you will notice far more changes than moving from an iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone 16 Pro. Even still, I wouldn't recommend upgrading from an S22U yet. I'm keeping my S24 Ultra for at least three to four years unless there's something revolutionary in the near future.
