---- STORY: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of Austrias very few Level 3 IPSC Handgun/PCC Matches that got postponed a few times because of covid regulations was finally held in Novermber 2021. It's predecessor in 2019 was the first match I was very capable and close of actually winning a level 3 match, but threw away the victory because my mental game wasn't up to the challange back then. After winning Austrian IPSC PCC Nationals in 2021, where I corrected a lot of the mental mistakes I previously suffered from, I felt like I could actually win this match and earn my very first IPSC Presidents Medal in a very competitive division. At least that's how the theory went...
In practice however, it was actually close to mayhem. The very first stage was my worst stage in recent history (stage 9) and I felt more pressure than ever before. After that it was a bit of a rollercoaster ride with stages that I nailed quite well, stages that were okay but below what I felt I needed and was able to deliver and stages that went so terrible I felt like there is no point in finishing the match... I actually started considering quitting the match and driving home because at some point severe frustration was really creeping in that kept me from enjoying the match. And how can someone justify spending so much time, money and effort on everything IPSC related without beeing able to actually enjoy the matches?
At some point I decided there's only one beneficial way out, and that's fighting as best as you can. I kept telling myself that the match is over at the point when the last shot has been fired. Until then it's give it all you got and see where you actually stack up without worrying too much about the outcome.
In the end I was lucky that my strongest opponents also had their share of serious troubles and weren't able to find their groove or had gun related issues. It was the edge I neede to carry away the win, which really was surreal after so much struggle. Even though I didn't feel I deserved this medal shooting performance wise, It actually was the hardest internal battle I ever fought at an IPSC match. So for me the medal doesn't really represent my shooting ability but instead is a trophy I earned by winning the internal fight and struggles I encountered at this match.
