Maternal mortality and morbidity are at an all-time high in the United States and continue to rise at disproportionate rates for marginalized women. Those on Medicaid in the state of Missouri are 10 times more likely to die within one year of pregnancy than those with private insurance. Overall, pregnant and birthing Black and Indigenous people have a 3-fold higher rate of death within a year of giving birth as compared with White birthing people. Moreover, for every death, and with conditions ranging from mental health to infections to hypertension, an additional 50,000 people giving birth experience significant and preventable birth-associated morbidity. This IQ Forum will hear from experts working to shift the U.S. maternal mortality and morbidity paradigm for our region.
