I was there on the tarmac to greet the hostages before they flew to Germany. The group from England, me included, left to fly back to England as soon as the hostages walked into the building you see in the film. What a relief to see them safe at last.

I was nine years old when this happened so I've been binge watching these videos today out of curiosity. Thank you for posting the video. I find this footage of the return and reunification with their loved ones joyful and emotional. I loved seeing more footage on the people caught in the middle of the crisis. It was also a bit nostalgic to see Peter Jennings. My parents watched ABC and allowed us to watch it as well because he had a way of reporting that was positive and reassuring to everyday Americans during a very dark time in our history. Thank you again for posting! Prior I just watched a video titled 'This Day in History: Iran Hostage Crisis Ends' aired on CBSN. That video also aired the deal being finalized. The White House scene was aired for about 20 seconds longer and showed the deal was briefly delayed by Iran because Carter did not sign a part of the agreement to release Iran's money. It was showing President Carter signing that part of the agreement to release the money. When I watched the CBSN clip, it made me feel appalled that he was willing to further risk these American lives so he and his party's administration could hopefully pocket $8 billion. It did however give me some context as to when I was a kid (and would go to the VFW with my grandparents from time to time), why the men at the VFW would play the song 'The Gambler' on the jukebox when Carter came on the TV screen. It seemed he was held with little to no regard. They were grateful of the safe return of the hostages and equally thankful Carter's lack of integrity did not get any of the hostages further hurt or killed nor affect the outcome of the crisis. The other video portrays the delay in the return of the hostages until Reagan was in office as a form of poetic justice. The video reported that the hostages were delayed about a half hour after Carter left office and said it was probably done intentionally. It's interesting to see the beginning of media dividing themselves and us as well. Thank you again for posting the wonderful footage!

We’re about the same age (I was in 3rd Grade when the hostage crisis happened so I may be one year younger than you) and I too find myself watching things like this from the early 80’s like the first launch of the Space Shuttle (and throughout the 80’s with things like the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster). I have so many memories of learning about this stuff in school we called “current events” and we got to talk about them in class. I certainly understand more of this as an adult than I did as a 3rd Grader. I’m so glad to come across someone who’s my age and has been looking at old news footage and documentaries lately. I watched one really good documentary here on KZitem that was pretty long and covered it extensively. It was quite interesting and I can watch old footage for hours. I also watched one that was kind of like the evolution of Terrorism and it had footage from the Hostage Crisis and went all that up to 9/11. Real fascinating stuff.

the hostage takers were just so damned tired. carter could make no deals because they had just cut him off and they wouldn't listen. he busted his ass in the last minutes of his presidency, ticking down till the final day to free these hostages he had worked so long to free, otherwise the tactics would start all over again. so finally some of the hostage takers put their own lives in jeopardy (and a few iranians (who had family outside of the country) gave their lives just to free them.
