Along with Mostepanova, Baraksanova is one of the most elegant gymnasts of all time.

Sadly I doubt we will ever see beautiful gymnastics like this again. The FIG has killed it with this open ended scoring emphasizing tumbling with little room for dance. Irina was such a gorgeous dancer. We saw too little of her. She Was Overshadowed By Her teammates.

Current programs should mandate 8 hours of ballet class and 2 hours of tumbling every day M-F rest on SaSu. That’s how we can get back to doing this type of gymnastics.

I hope there is a thing in women’s floor exercise as a remake. The choreography not only mersmerizing and beautiful, but also tells a story. Such composition like this should be redone by a gymnast of equal artistic abilities as a tribute. Braksanova is a beautiful dancer.

I downloaded this a long time ago and have watched it hundreds of times. Thank you. It is wonderful to be able to take photos and screen captures of her beautiful face. I spent years watching the black and white of the Olmouc Alternate Games 1984 which ChocDave was kind enough to upload to Yahoo Groups many years ago and have done many special effects but spent years watching this beautiful routine without being able to see her face clearly at all but just the arm movements and the line and of course music were beautiful enough to watch a thousand times before the Gymnternet on KZitem got started.

Notice that those qho can actually dance don't have excessive hand movements. Most gymnasts today have such horribly ugly hand movements to try to hide the fact that they can't dance.

Good observation. I've heard that Russian ballet actually emphasizes quite rigid and extended hands so they can be guides for the rest of the body. You just don't see that in most gymnasts now, the hands tend to be floppy and wave around a lot in order to fain "choreography".

@ Jayson D.....So true, sooo sad of what "artistic" gymnastics has become. Any mediocre dancer could walk off the street and learn Gabby Douglas's FX ( minus the tumbling ) in one afternoon BUT it would take a seasoned, classical dancer who has spent countless hours of blood, sweat and tear practice at the dance bar to master the dance part of this routine. Today, it's all shake your booty-shake your booty crap! How much value does that have???

How did they survived a full in on springless floor ? OMG
@MD-722
3 жыл бұрын
The floor was sprung by 1984, not greatly (about 2in coils), but sprung. The first _sprung_ floor as we know it (the 4in coil floor) was introduced a year later in 1985. In the late 70s (77-79) when Elena Mukhina and Stella Zakharova were doing 2 double salto passes (Mukhina: full-in tuck & double tuck. Zakharova: full-in tuck & double pike) it was only a miracle they didn't break their feet. Zakharova even performed the first double layout in 1977 on the dead floors from back then.

@@MD-722 I would love to see video of Zakharova's "double layout" from 1977. But maybe my socks would be blown off. It just upsets me that it seems fans now have no distinction between successfully completing a skill or not. Yes, it's amazing that Aleksyutina tried a double Arabian in 1976. But she didn't successfully land it. Yet people just act like she did SMH. Idk, maybe it's a zoomer thing.

@@thesovgc no one really acts like she landed it though, i think everyone who has seen it knows she landed on her rear. people give her credit bc she did a skill worth 0.5 today on a slab of carpet. not to mention there's also a chance she did land it later on.

@@romeo2282 I think I'm just pedantic. I wouldn't mind ppl saying she attempted it. It's when I see ppl say she did it (as in landed it) without proof that is frustrating.

The coaches stole Baraksanova's chances that she earned in the Worlds and Euros because they thought Shushu and Oksana would peak in 1988 Olympics and wanted audiences in the world to see them as winners at the expense of Barak and Mostepanova who earned the right to go to the finals at the Worlds and Barak was cheated out of the chance SHE EARNED to go to the finals at Euros. In close-ups Barak either looks furious or about to cry from that terrible soviet coach and being cheated out of her big chances.

Now you can compare Irina and Simone Biles. Both girls are/were artistic gymnasts, but in Irina performance you can clearly see artisty and in Simone you can see only tumbling like in circus, without artistic elements
