Join Deb in embodying the Divine Feminine with your #InnerGoddessTeam! This week, we’re honoring Iris, the Greek goddess of rainbows. She was considered to be the messenger between the gods and humanity, and if one saw a rainbow, it was believed they were witnessing Iris traveling with one of her divine messages. Call on Iris for peace, protection, and calm, and hang a rainbow sun catcher to attract her into your life!

Iris’ themes are winter, peace, protection, air, meditation, promises and beginnings. She appears as a winged maiden on a shining, hopeful rainbow and, according to Patricia Telesco, was said to “represent the calm after the storm - the end of the year’s activities and the advent of a new beginning.”
In addition to her role as a messenger between gods and humanity, it was also believed that she could travel freely to the underworld and would lead the souls of the dead women to the Elysian Fields. To honor her, the Greeks would plant purple iris flowers on the graves of the dead. To this day, the Greeks plant irises on women's graves so that Goddess Iris will guide them to their resting places.
One of her other tasks was to bring Zeus jugs of water from the river Styx in the underworld. Zeus would make the gods swear by that sacred water and any god who lied would be breathless for a year and then barred for nine years from the gods meetings and feasts.
However, even with that dubious chore, she was known to be a sweet-tempered goddess and welcomed in all corners of the world as a bringer of hope and justice through temperance rather than force. In fact, it’s been said that all the colors of the rainbow blended together create the color white, essence of the Spirit.
You can honor Iris by wearing colorful clothes, and opening a window to let her fly in on wings of change and refreshment, then send your dreams and wishes back with her to the heavens. Call on her when you want to embody her gentle strength and balanced communication skills to bring more harmony and peace into your life.
I shared two goddess chants this time:
To evoke Iris’ winged presence -
There's a river of birds in migration, a nation of women with wings
AND a simple one, invoking her peaceful qualities -
Bless me, Iris, with peace… love, safety, and beauty
