Ah SJ, this vid made my day. My daughter's middle name is Róisín and I live in Ireland. I grew up in England in an Irish family and could never understand how people had trouble pronouncing Irish names. I love Réiltín (Rail-teen), Siobhán (Shiv-awn), Saiorse (Seer-sha) and Labhaoise (Lav-ee-sha) for a girl and Feidhlim (Fay-lim), Faolán (Fwail-awn) and Odhrán (Oh-rawn) for a boy. Great video, and well done for even attempting the pronunciations!

SJ, love the idea of this video, but I'm sorry a good few of these names were said incorrectly. Not your fault, Irish names are really hard and our vowel sounds are tough get if you're not familiar with or grew up with them. Northern Ireland do pronounce words slightly differently but some of these just aren't right. I'm from Dublin for reference, but this is how I would pronounce these. Áine = awn-yah (a more old fashioned name now) Oisín = ush-een (lots of boys with this name) Eithne = eth-na (never heard it said as Enya ever) Conloach = cun-lach (never heard anyone with this name) Colm = Col-im Lachlan = Loch-lan Dearbhla = Derv-la (bh makes a v sounds in Irish) Róisín = Row-sheen (the accent over the o and i lengthens the vowel)

Aine= Awn-ya Oisin= Ush-een Colm= Kol-mmm (exaggerates m with a slight u sound after l) Eithne= Eth-na Dearbhla= Der-vla (ea pronounced like an over annunciated e and bh always makes a v sound) Roisin= Row-sheen Loved the video, nice to see familiar names xx

Áine is pronounced 'awn-ya', completely understand any difficulty with Irish names tho haha they're beautiful but tricky 😂😂 Edited to add: you pronounced it right at the end of that segment tho! And Colm is just said like the word column. And you were pretty much spot on with Lachlan, it's just lock-linn, but without the scottish throat sound in the middle haha. Dearbhla is said like 'dervla', a 'bh' makes a 'v' sound in Irish for some strange reason 😂 Róisín is roe-sheen. Anytime there's a fada (little dash) above a letter, it elongates the vowel. Really enjoyed this video and your appreciation for Irish names! 😊💚

Lachlan is a massively popular name in Australia and has been in and out of the top 10 for a better part of two decades here. We pretty consistently pronounce it lock-lan and nearly every Lachlan goes by the nickname Lachie/Locky/Lochie. I never realised it wasn't a well known name in the rest of the word, wow! So interesting considering Aussie baby name lists are usually pretty similar to the UK/US - I wonder why we love Lachlan so much here!?
