How’s your experience there? Are you totally adapted to the Japanese way of living?

Yingzhou Li well, while no place is perfect, my life certainly improved when I moved here and I wouldn’t even consider going back. Japan, like any country, has its issues, politically, socially and otherwise, at the end of the day, I think I’ll stay. Have you ever been here?

Yes, I have visited Japan four times. Loved the experience. Places are very clean, people are polite and food is very good. Traveling around is safe and convenient. I moved to the east coast of the US with family when I was 15 from China. I found myself liking Japan a lot more than China after I visited both countries. I guess that may be because Japan has struck a good balance between traditions and modernizations. Since you had a reverse migration experience in moving from the West to the Far East, how did you come to that decision?

Yingzhou Li Well, I was very interested as a child, but not in the way that most westerners are. I had a book that was a collection of photos of modern Japan (1985 modern anyway) and they just captured my imagination in a way that I can’t describe. 11 years later, my friend introduced me to my now wife, who happened to be an exchange student from Japan, so I took the opportunity to visit Japan with her, and it was so weird because the place was EXACTLY as I expected it to be and that was a very good thing. Above everything though, it is a much safer place than where I am from, so the choice was easy. People are people and the little differences are so fun and interesting to me. As of now I have every right of a Japanese citizen except the right to vote. I hope to soon make that a reality. We all have to find a place on this little ball called Earth. I hope everyone can find theirs. I am very lucky in that sense.

« Strange and foreign places » : as far as there are humans living somewhere, there is nothing strange. The strangest places are those where humans are pressurized to the point that they become alien to their true nature. And this, sadly, is common to all cultures.
