Lyrics: (Can someone help me with the bit(s) I can't decipher - I'm just an Englishman.) A cold winter's morn in 1641, My lovely Ann was taken by O'Cane, Taken and defiled at the point of rebel gun, And drownèd in the murky River Bann. Hundreds more were taken at this date, Butchered and drowned, or buried in the sand, O'Neill's false promises ensured the same fate, I cursed his papist army to a man. Then one day (on th') horizon I did see, A hundred of our ships all coming to my land, And off he stepped, Protector of the Realm, And he smiled and placed a sword into my hand. Off we marched to Drogheda, to Aston's guarded town, Together we stormed it, with Cromwell at the helm, He screamed, "You butchers! Remember Portadown, And Cromwell, Protector of the Realm!" And now I go with flowers to see my lovely Ann, I go and tell her that her death was not in vain, I tell my children about the Lord Protector, And how he saved our people from the same. Britain has had some pretty good Kings and Queens, Elizabeth I and Alfred come(s) to mind, But the Lord Protector emulates them all Oliver ??--['the top one you will find']--?? Cromwell, Cromwell the greatest British king, Strong in his beliefs, he never let us down, He fought for his people and he rid us of O'Neill, As we took our due revenge for Portadown. Cromwell, Cromwell the greatest British king, Strong in his beliefs, he never let us down, He fought for his people and he rid us of O'Neill, As we took our due revenge for Portadown.

@@RoyalGiraffe "Horizon I did see" is a good guess! It's strange that the "on the" seems to have been dropped! I also can't believe I put 'remulates' and didn't see 'emulates'! I was expecting it to be a word that meant "surpassed". I'm interested that you think the "pretty good Kings and Queens" line is wrong. To me, that sounded very clear.

I like this song It sounds as if Cromwell was some kind of great liberator who estabilished a liberal federation instead of imperialist kingdom. In which every nation was equal. As if Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Wales was something USA was meant to be or something like Roman Republic based on civil liberties, pluralism and state equality to some extent At the same time, we can hear this folk spirit of Ireland Lovely :)

Now that there is the queens jubilee has passed we can think back on this great man Oliver Cromwell who defeated (for a time only) the monarchist tyranny of England of the kings Charles the first, it's almost finished for Elizabeth but Charles and William must be carreful when they come to power to not put their hand too deeply the Brithish affairs (PS : we can also talk about the election of the Sinn Feinn in north Ireland)

🇬🇧. Not sure how to feel about Cromwell. He believed in purifying the Church of England from all remnancies of Catholicism, which is great, but then the British people overthrew Puritan rule and restored the Monarchy. Then allowed Charles II to exume Cromwell's body, butcher it and display it at Westminster on a pike.

@@lukedevaney1933 Martin Luther never regretted the reformation. Moreover, never did anyone ask for the Catholic church to make war and burn people alive, nor run the French Hugenots from their lands and homes. So the violence is not the fault of Protestantism. Most importantly, The five Solas prove exactly that Protestantism isn't man made. Its literal 5 founding rules ( 5 Solas) include. Glory of God Alone, SCRIPTURE ALONE, Christ alone. A belief that all of what is the Christian faith should be taken from the bible/scripture. Not mans word.
