Super super film. All key details captured. The old style signs, the level crossings, everything really. Amazing how much has changed and modernised.

My cousin sent me this video. The lovely man at Cratloe Station is my Grandad. I couldn’t believe it why when I saw him! Thank you so much for sharing it. I was born in England and my family spent 2 weeks every summer at the station house. They were very happy times.

Hi Claire, that’s great he was captured on camera. The guy who filmed this (Tony Price) always tried to capture the railway workers and especially the gate keepers. Thankfully Tony took the time to film these scenes.

I went on a mixed cycling/train tour with my brother and my best friend in Sept. 1976. On arriving in Limerick from Rosslare Harbour, before heading to west Clare on the bikes, I enquired about the train to Galway via Ennis for when we got back to Limerick. The staffer said the last train just left. I said 'not for this evening, in three days time'. He said, 'No, the last train ever, just left. The line closed today.' We camped out that night near Kildimo, and lunched the next day in Foynes, where we had a good poke around the now closed station. Little did I know I'd be commuting to work in Dublin in those same Craven carriages when they reopened the Maynooth line in 1981. I look forward to seeing the trains run to Foynes again, and maybe someday be able to repeat the trip from Rosslare all the way to Limerick, and who knows, down to Foynes.

A nice memory to have, and different times. While we can no longer travel to Rosslare from Waterford, you can now travel between Galway and Limerick. Further expansion of the network is happening.

yeah sadly Irish rail couldn't give a flying fuck about passengers so there's no passengers on the line its sad askeaton adare and patrickswell and more could have connection to the city center and if they opened the cement spur line so could dooradoyle

Wonderful footage. Hopefully if the line reopens, even just as freight, day trips can be arranged again.

Can't believe it, my Aunt & her family live in the Cratloe Stationhouse today. Absolutely incredible to see this footage. I've shared it with them & been informed the man at Cratloe was my Aunt's partners' Grandfather, so he has been absolutely delighted to see this. Thank you for sharing.

This was my first trip in ireland, As we approached Limerick from Ennis, half a brick came through a quaterlight, smashing the glass most of which landed in Graham Nuttal's (whose bronze dog resides at Garsdale) sandwich.

Stupid question, but what was the protocol if the loco driver failed to catch the token for the section - I have seen some trains catch tokens going at speed, and would they just stop the train and wait till the token is brought up the line?

I live near Cratloe myself and there is very little change except that the station house is now someone's home and the trains sadly don't stop.

Thank you for this wonderful film. Why are the locos carry two lanterns on front?

The first three coaches behind the loco are interesting. Any info on their history?

2nd hand ex-BR full brake (Mk 1) bought by CIE and converted to a generator van. The next ones are standard CIE (1963-7) Cravens, nearest equivalent we have in Ireland to British Mk 1s.
