I met a ww2 American vet in a hotel in Galway a few years ago. he had been in the 101st airborne. I happened to be reading a book on d day in the bar at the time. he came over and we got chatting. fascinating stuff. I asked him what he thought of it all now, he thought about it for a while then said 'no one should have to go through that'. I got him to autograph the chapter in the book that described his unit, he was one of the paras who dropped into your village, the longest day film has them caught in then hit h steeple.

My great grandfather was a stretcher bearer in the 7th Royal Irish Fusiliers, 49th Brigade, 16th Irish Division and left a wife and seven children to serve. He was wounded in the battle of the Somme during the attack on Ginchy and again wounded in the battle of Passchendaele near Square Farm, north of Frezenberg and east of Ypres. If u want some great insights, read the Battalion diaries which have daily summaries written by the Battalion Adjutant. Aerial photos of the area near Square farm show it was a giant mud fest, and has more craters than the moon. It’s a miracle anyone survived. Imagine these poor fellows thoughts going over the top in the Somme only four months after the Easter Rebellion. Then come back home to no job and being ostracized. The 36th Ulster and the 16th Irish got along well and supported each other often. They all did their duty with honor and courage, no matter where they hailed from. May God rest their souls.

My Grandfather was Gunner Thomas J (Joe) Hussey of the Clyde RGA who fought in the Egypt/Palestine campaign in 1917/18, including the taking of Jerusalem and was on the western front for a time too. He joined up in Glasgow in 1914 at the age of 36 and spent the first two years in Scotland and also England on maneuvers and training etc and then went overseas with the Artillery. In 1918 in the Egypt and Palestine region he was with a mountain battery and also mounted United and was an assigned sergeant major for a time. He returned to Ireland and married in June 1919 and raised a family in his home county of Westmeath. I have his two medals and I am proud of his service.

All the armchair republicans keeping the flame of hate alive. There so oppressed and hard done by getting there €200 a week on the dole selling some drugs on the side but feel they have the upper hand on all things Irish when they put the Celtic jersey 3 times a year. You’ll see the stupid comments in the next couple of weeks. They use terms like "west Brit" army of occupation, traitors, oppression, unfree! Probably still in there 40s most of them still living with Mammy listening too the Wolfe tones after a few cans thinking there in the ra!
