At that young age, although old enough to be away from his mom, is still searching for that closeness. This is a very sweet video and testament to how different species can develop close bonds.

Un...Freaking....REAL! My two favorite animals on earth...kittens and IRISH WOLFHOUNDS! I guess they really do live up to the saying that they're lambs with the family, and lions against burglers. Swoooooon!

I had a mixed breed dog that was predominantly Irish Wolfhound, he was a gentle giant. It is such a shame that large breeds like this have such a cruelly short life span.

I had a dog that was mixed breed Wolfhound as well so she was only about 50 lbs. It looked like a smaller version and had the calm temperament of the IW. I wish I could have a couple of them now. They're so mellow. I have a terrier and the temperament is just not the same.

They are very safe, temperamentally. They are just not terribly coordinated when young. Don't forget that as short as their lifespan is, they don't reach maturity until sometime after 18 months old.

Had a dog that was half wolfhound when I was growing up. I would say that despite the size of the fullbred ones, they're probably one of the safest breeds to have around other animals and children.

Having grown up with smaller breeds I wonder do you have to work in extra training with a larger dog so they know what is and isn't okay to chew on? I mean, obviously furniture is a no but they can reach things mini schnauzers can't... like a roast on the table...

you are absolutly right! tell the truth, as young pups one NEEDS to train these big dogs to be still, to walk slow, to not be so hyper as they do knock people and kids over. they are gentle but as young puppies, they will chase your young 2 yr old and chew on pants legs. must be trained not to. they are easy to train as they are sensitive and dont like being disaplined, so they will try so hard to do what you like.

I like how everyone says they're so safe to have around kids. Do they get like that when they're older? Our puppy has knocked me over before! She's 10 months and she's wildly impatient and will run into you, in addition to leaning on you when you pet her, and will not swim. At all. (She's a real sweetie, though, and loves to play).

hi, your puppy of 10 months is like a young teenager. My advice is a good long walk will let her get all the energy out. Later when they get older they will lay about the house, preferably in the way, but still need that good long walk twice a day, with one/two normal walks. I always did two long, one shorter. Also, it's not uncommonly for them not to swim. I guess, genetically they're "on-sight long distance hunters." Maybe you can help her by going into the water first to show it's no problem.

@ecuadmail not really - wolfhounds are easy to train (if a little stubborn) they are normally very good about what they can eat and what not although like most dogs if you just leave the roast on the table for more then ten minutes without checking - say goodbye to dinner

You keep a close eye on food that is on the table, and when you are out of the room, keep the counters clean! They usually train well though. We had a labradoodle, and while he knows he's not supposed to go after stuff on the counter, and never tries when we are there. When you leave the house/room, he still sneaks on. Anything is fair game!

Yeah, that's true. We've been firm with her about her training. As she gets older, she gets more patient as well- I guess it's just something they grow into. I can definitely see her acting like this with a kitten later in life- at this point, my dad has to try really hard to get her riled up about anything because he just can't bother her no matter what he does.
