Thank you for your review. Regarding rear gel filter we know in some moments it’s not most convenient solution, however only extreme thin filter as our gelatin filter has no influence on ray of light and optical performance. Any other type of filter for example glass filter would have influence on optical performance because of thickness. There are disadvantages of such filter like difficult use in some conditions, vulnerability on external conditions, but there are also advantages, it’s cheap, light, fits every pocket and can be used in urgent situation. It’s also optional so we don’t force anyone to use it, but in case of such extreme widangle lens there are no many other options.

Thanks for the response IRIX. I think your comment supports what I say in the video - at an affordable price I suggest some people give it a try, it does have a few advantages - I just don't want people to be really excited about the idea because there are certainly some drawbacks. And the fact that I am not a fan of the rear filters doesn't impact my pick of the Irix 11 and 15 as best budget wide angle lenses.

I wonder if there maybe a alternate method of placing it in the rear other than having to slide the film in a slot, or having the filter in a thin frame to make it easier to slide in? I think its a good idea to have IF it can be applied with some ease...But with the same idea, why not have these made larger for mounting on the front? I can see these mounted in a frame that can easily mount with some magnets or even velcro...I think there needs to be a manufacturer that can invest some thought, as you did with the lens hood door for the front 15mm filter...., in order to make something easy, affordable, and useful for high quality filters.

I have been using the Irix 15mm f2.4 Blackstone since it was first released and I love it for landscapes, architecture & interiors. I had previously used a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye so I was used to the fiddly nature of the rear filters. The 95mm front thread can be a problem as it is too large for the Lee 100mm system holder. I found a guy on the internet based in Vietnam called BomboPhoto who makes a filter holder & adapter for the Irix 15mm that takes Lee & other 100mm filters. I think that Irix now also make a front filter holder too but I have not seen one yet. Hopefully they will have one on show at the UK Photoshow next month.I have bought a pack of Irix rear filters but rarely use them. I will probably buy the Irix 11mm lens as well once I get enough spare cash! The optical quality of these lenses is very good.

Great review! Initially when I heard about the rear filter system and heard it was using gelatin filters, I knew that was a mistake on the IRIX system. I would never trust placing a gelatin filter inside a camera.

To be fair all the rear filter systems I know about use gelatin. I know there are a few systems in the works that will allow glass drop in but I don't think any of those are on the market yet?

My first and only use of rear filters was way back in the 35mm era, Kodak had a system for an military air born 35mm if I remember right a 500 mm F.3 lens, back in the early 1970's. I picked one camera up second hand, in the 1980's. there was no other filter system, you installed and used as is, it worked fine with a single exeption, the filters would warp at room temp, so you had to keep all the equipment under 50 f. yep I am that old, F not C.

That's an honest review, a joy to watch. Those gelatine filters really seem awkward. Do you plan a review of the Laowa 9mm Zero-D anytime? I would love to see how that compares to the Irix as it's also about 600$ give or take.

The 11mm was a god gift for my real estate photography...So versitile...Many times im shooting a room using the 1.2 crop factor on my D810 and that make the lens around 15mm as well which is great and very practical ! Also you avoid the corners which usually are distorded...Overall i have no negative to say

The 15 is wide enough for me. Yes the rear filters look unusable. (Don’t remember the exact lens(es)). They should have gone with the same build as many telephoto lenses nowerdays have... a slot near the back where you can slight in real (smaller) glass filters that even got a metal (maybe plastic) ring on them. Anyways, thank you for the review. As I said I don’t think I have a use for a lens that wide... except maybe a very occasional interior shot. For landscape etc it makes stuff way to small etc.

Affordable is a relative term... but true most of the lenses I listed below are on the expensive site... maybe the Tamron can fit the bill.... Canon 200mm f/2 L IS,Canon 300mm f/2.8 L IS II,Canon 400mm f/4 DO IS II, Canon 400mm f/2.8 L IS II, Canon 500mm f/4 L IS II, Canon 600mm f/4 L IS II, Canon 800mm f/5.6 L IS, Canon 200-400 f/4 L IS--> shuttermuse.com/canon-drop-in-filter-guide/ Nikon Nikkor 500mm f/4G ED VR Lens (probably 200mm f/2, 300mm f/2.8 too) I think the Tamron 300 2.8 got one too And very likely other modern lenses at least above 200mm, I just ran out of time to google. They are generally referred to as Drop-In Filters, if that helps Cheers P.s for Sony users: petapixel.com/2015/02/18/owl-is-the-worlds-first-drop-in-filter-adapter-that-lets-you-swap-filters-in-a-flash/

I did fond that those filters are almost one-time-use as you do scratch the edges while inserting. Removing them is also damn annoing. If you get one in nicely it did work nicely. Cheap as hell compared to big glass filters. And small to carry, but I'd prefer to insert those beforehand, behind desk at home :)

Well, on the 5D Mark IV and up there is also ISO 50, although it's an extended mode, and yet, only one stop. When you're shooting in bright day light one stop is not much. I'm talking about ISO 10, 5, 2, or even ISO 1: that would be amazing, both for stills and for video. Shooting at f/1.4 during the day would be great.
