I have an Irvine 40 Sport mkII that used in a Morley Hughes 300. Great engine, now runs like new again with new bearings.

I've had really good results in the UK using Screwfix No Nonsense Paint & Varnish Stripper which is non caustic. You brush it on the still assembled engine and allow it to work for 1 hour before removing with a toothbrush and water. Sometimes if the castor is really baked on, some areas need a second application but it always works. So far it has only produced gleaming engines with no discolouration.

Hello David, Well... It thrills me to see you give this little guy more screen time! Honestly, I cannot remember when or where I bought this engine, but I'll bet I bought it used because as you have shown us, that engine has had many tanks of fuel run through it. I know the plane I removed it from was brand new; I found an old VHS recording of Christmas Day, 1992 of my youngest son tearing the wrapping paper off of the Hangar 9 Easy Fly 40 box and holding it up for the camera. 32 years ago! That was my first (and only) ARF I had ever purchased, but it was for the kids. The engine, I'll bet, came used from Archie's Hobbies on 62nd Avenue. Neither of my kids took a great interest in flying RC and I did let other friends fly that plane, but there's no way I put as much time on that engine that seems apparent on its disassembly. I look forward to seeing your progress on the Irvine 40. Right now, I'm going back to the shop and continue working on the Easy Fly 40. As you know, I have the OS FS40 to put on it. I still have not replaced the bearings in the OS... so I may have questions for you on that one once I get into it. florida_floyd

I believe that detergent will dissolve the way a powdered laundry soap dissolves. Mix some up and check it out.

Any cleaner is better than none. Id soak something like the muffler in it as a test. From there you can see if just soaking will work or if you need to scrub it.

Good suggestion. When I make videos I make them in batches. Thus many comments are irrelevant only because the video is about 2-3 behind the reality and other videos. I have made but not yet posted 2 other videos in this series as of today to include the cleaning and the first run after cleaning.

Why not just soak it in paint thinner? I have done that many times on engine restores, and it works great with a nylon brush! Get the low odor at the Home Depot.
