Today I sold my R6 and R and bought the R5. I really needed more MP for birding and also wanted custom video modes + 4K/120fps. Painful for the loss in money, but grateful for the R5 :)

I couldn’t possibly agree with you more!! The R6 mkII should have had higher megapixels and a top LCD screen and I would have upgraded without a doubt. I think they really dropped the ball on that especially if the R5 mkII is going to be 50+ megapixels. There is no reason to have that much of a gap in the lineup. Especially with how the crop lineup is currently and with the future addition of the R8. The R5 is a great camera, but I feel I’m paying for video features I would never use as a photographer.

Seems Canon answered your request with the R8 in terms of a low cost full frame photographer's option to the R. I want the same physical form factor (the protective inner shutter, touch bar since I gotten used to is, etc) with improved FPS (nothing crazy) and updated sensor (I guess - I have heard the color science for out of camera images differs in all other mirror-less). As an enthusiast, I would rather save the money and buy another R when my current one wears out. The 30 megapixels and protective shutter with a top lcd screen are more useful to me than 40fps.

could not agree more ! I would also love to see an EOS R MK II - , 2 card slots , 35MP, IBIS and get rid of the touch bar , I do not need 30 pics/sec. I hardly do any video - so keep the video features basic and give us a good full frame camera for a decent price. I have lots of friends in who still use the 5D MK III or similar, they would love to upgrade but the R5 is too expensive for them and for their needs.. to change to the R6 feels like a downgrade from the 5D .. An EOS R MK II could easily become a mega seller like the AE-1 in the seventies...

Just to say, the R6ii actually out-resolves the R despite the lower 24MP. Checkout the- digital-picture: "The first R-series camera, the EOS R, has a higher resolution imaging sensor. However, as seen in the Canon EOS R6 II vs. Canon EOS R resolution comparison, the R6 II is producing a sharper image."

Excellent video and topic. I too shoot portraits in studio and outdoors. I have two EOS R cameras and I love them. I've had them for a few years now and never had a problem with the single card slot, although I wouldn't complain if it had two. I'm on your side; if they upgraded the R to have IBIS, the focusing mechanism of the R6, the additional card slot of the R6 and kept the megapixels where they are or just a few more, it, to me would be the ideal camera for what I do. Unlike you, I don't do any video, strictly photography and for that the R has been a great camera. I shot the Mark IV prior to (and still do sometimes) acquiring the R's and the image quality is something I'm used to...not sure I'd drop down to lesser pixels or more.

I had the EOS R for a few years now and it is a great camera, I have the EOS R6 MK II now. I am not getting rid of my EOS R. You should get the R6 MK II it is optimized for photography and it takes great video. 24 megapixels is the sweet spot, you don’t need 30 megapixels. The autofocus on the R6 is amazing. If they came out with a new EOS R then I would probably get rid of it. I will always love my EOS R.

I agree with you about the EOS R II feature set. I think that there is a big market for a 30MP FF, with the autofocus of the R6. I only NEED the single card slot (hobby only), and that could be a way to offer the upgraded camera to the market, without hindering the sales of the R6/ R5 customers. I'll never spend the $3,200-$5,300 CAD on the R6/R5, but I could stretch my budget to $2,000 for the R.

Happy New Year! I totally agree. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I may add: After the EOS R, Canon lost it price-wise. Coming from the EOS EF world, everything beyond 2.5k $ for a body is tough even for 'enthusiastic' amateurs (like me). Since I can't see a path to an affordable, 'sweet spot' RF- lens line-up in the future, I'm moving over to Fujifilm step by step. When my 5D Mk III breaks, I will reconsider. Makes me a bit sad, though.

I think Canon should develop a 100 megapixel backside illuminated stack sensor and call it the R2! I do feel the R1 will probably be 60 Megapixel with same sensor design as the R3. I think the R5 II will be much like the R6 Mark II but 50 megapixels in my opinion. What do you think ? 😀

I'd bet the R5 mk2 will be around 50mgpx for sure... if nothing else but just for marketing purposes.. As to anything tagged as a flagship cam? Hmm.. they have traditionally tilted those toward photogs who need SPEED, like sports shooters, so I don't think it will have huge megapixels. Just my .02

An upgrade of the R with a new 30MP sensor, adjusted AF and CFExpress card slot would be great. I don’t think they’ll make another R camera. It was a one off to get their foot in the mirrorless world. I’m fairly certain the R8 is the successor to the R and RP; fixed sensor, single card slot, full frame, $1400. I think they are tight on their R&D budget, hence the sensor from the 1DX III in the R6, The R6II sensor in the R8. They probably could have reused the R5 sensor in an R II body but they have too many skus as it is and then you’d probably be sitting in $2800 range. I agree that they should have bumped up the sensor resolution for the R6 II, but since we’re dealing with physics, that probably would have lowered the max ISO (however far above 16,000 anyone really goes) and sensor readout speed. 40 FPS is insane, for the record. Coming from a 7D II, the R6 II is an amazing upgrade. If the resolution of the R is where you want to be and you aren’t shooting fast moving subjects, I don’t see much reason to look at an R6 II or the R5.
@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk

Currently own the R and R5. I’ve also had the R6 (lost to the sea 😭 )! The sensor of the R6 was so much better than the R. The 20mp of the R6 never felt like a downgrade from the R in actual use. I think the R6ii would be a serious upgrade for you. Rent/borrow one ASAP and you’ll know. I love my R5. For photos and video, it’s absolutely incredible. It’s getting ‘old’ but it’s still awesome. I’d buy another. What job can’t I take it on and have complete confidence in?! I can’t say the same for the R… when it’s alongside my R5, shooting hybrid professionally with the R, I’m frustrated with it’s autofocus, lack of control wheel, joystick, older sensor , 1card slot and it’s definitely a C cam for video (and I don’t even have a B cam).

Sadly I think Canon has abandoned the R completely, People seem to be getting caught up in the FPS/MP race and think the R is a bad camera, I've had people ask what model it is and when they see they say "Oh it's just the R" ................. I love my R, I have a few RF lenses RF15-35 f2.8 L, RF 50 f1.8, RF 24-105 f4 L & RF 70-200 f4 L and I get the shots I want and am very happy with them, the only addition I would like is the animal eye focus feature, I imagine this is a simple software upgrade but I very much doubt Canon will do it as it might take sales away from the more expensive models, If I did ever add another body it would probably be the R3 for wildlife and airshows.
