I’m banking on it. Was gonna get an M2 or M3 instead, but that price is just too attractive for the base M1 at WM. I’m hedging my bet against Apple that they’ll feel committed to the M1 MBA because of the relationship with WM. Otherwise they will disenfranchise all the new buyers of Macs by dropping support for what for those buyers was a brand new laptop, regardless how long it’s been on the market. I think the WM relationship just bought M1 users a lot longer support schedule than the M1 would have had otherwise. Fingers crossed.

@@billb8262 Of course, Apple will treat these Walmart-sold MBAs as fully authentic Macs. I think that's part of the appeal for the buyer. Bodes well for ALL Apple Silicon owners. Anyway, Apple already sells tons of their other doo-dads at WM....but they will only offer ONE (and the most entry-level) laptop at a time. I have both the MacBook Air M1 and MacBook Air M2. Both of them are base version with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. The M2 is slower, especially in heavy tasks like editing photos or video. I strongly believe that the reason is because of the single, not dual module something with the SSD on the MacBook Air M2. Therefore, that is a big difference and a weird decision made by Apple. It has been fixed in the M3 though.

not weird. They needed to make a statement with the M1 and then from M2 they were back to their old ways of trying to milk the customer as much as possible. As in making you pay more to get better specs. The M1 was an anomaly. Probably the best laptop for the price to this day.

Battery replacement kit from ifixit costs 110,46€, so a total second life. You are completely right the people that have a performance problem on a M1 MBA don't need a M2 or M3 or M4 MBA they need a MPB with MPro or MMax chip whatever generation and probably more RAM. Valid thoughts are in my opinion need a bigger Display, need MORE RAM as it is limiting me or need a bigger Storage inside (But external Thunderbolt enclosure with NVME is the more economic version). M3 or M2 are not really reasons to upgrade the M1 is still lightning fast. I came from a decade of Thinkpads and upgraded them to the max in the past (Ram Maximized, I5 dualcore to i7 quadcore, HDD to SSD, HD TN to FHD IPS), if you compare the M1 MBA its speed is fully sufficient for all terms of usage except real gaming or workstation stuff, if you want to game use a console or agaming PC if you want to do workstation stuff use a workstation. Always use the right tool for your needs. Don't use your butter knife to cut trees dont use your axe to spread peanut butter on your bread.

I think battery lifetime is not the issue cause, let's be honest, MacBook batteries are consumables. You just use it for 1k cycles or to 80% health and replace it. If not, you don't have to go and pay Apple an extra something to replace it, just go with a local repair shop

Since they've started selling the M1 Air at Walmart at $699, I Apple and third partiy apps will keep supporting these machines for a long time. However, I think it would be a good idea for them to keep the Walmart models at that price, keep the older style chassis, and bump it up to M2 in the next year or so. That would save money on costs to keep it as low as Apple is willing to go with it while offering a lowest end option. Think of it as a "MacBook SE" type thing.

I was ever so close to pulling the trigger on a "new" MacBook Air M1", currently available at Walmart for $699 US.... until I watched this video. I already had the topic of longevity in the back of my mind. Your comments reinforced those concerns. I need to get at least 3 to 4 years out of a notebook... and I'm simply not convinced buying an M1 at this point would provide that kind of longevity. It's a gamble I can avoid by sticking with Intel. These decisions would be made easier if Apple would provide at least some guarantee of system support. Google already does this for ChromeOS and that guarantee has served to increase sales of even aging Chromebooks such as the Lenovo Duet 3. That device, even though now several years old, will continue to see O/S support through at least 2029. With Apple, I'm not nearly as convinced the M1 will see support through 2027. Just too much risk for me.

Think it just bought the M1 Air a few more years of support to avoid angering the new Mac users Walmart will create. I’m buying one myself after looking heavily at Windows machines to avoid the Apple tax on RAM and storage. But none of those machines perform like the M1/M2/M3 unplugged and their batteries don’t hold a charge like the MBA if doing much of anything unplugged. For me the M1 base is still powerful enough to handle my photo editing requirements and work tasks with only 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. I’ll buy an external SSD to go with it later. I already have a dock, mouse, keyboard and will get a 43” 4K TV to use as my monitor when not in laptop mode. I think it’s the buy of the year.

I'm on my M2 MacBook Pro 13" with 2TB of SSD Storage and 24GB of RAM. Considering how godly the M1 Air is, the 8GB RAM variants probably wont make it to 2028, but the 16GB RAM models will def make it to the 2030's

Perfectly happy M1 user here. It still works great and the power and battery life are quite good even after 3.5 years of almost daily usage and I don't see the need to upgrade it yet. Sure hope M1 machines (also Apple laptops and desktops in general) will get longer support than 7 years. 2017 (or even a lot older than those) Apple computers will be perfectly fine for most basic users for years to come and not getting updates does suck. Computers in general age a lot slower than phones and iPhone 6s got around 5 years of support (and has got some smaller bug fixes and security updates this year so around 7.5 years after launch!) so getting only 2 more years more than a phone for a fully fledged computer is laughable since I know many that have like 10 years old Apple laptops and desktops in daily use and they are still happily using them. 9-10 years would be perfect in my mind.

Has anyone yet found out how long the M1 Macbooks Airs bought new in 2024 will continue to get Apple OS and Security updates? Perhaps will Apple base the update support on when the M1 device was bought new rather than basing them all on the 2020 initial release? This is a very important consideration for possible new M1 devices being bought new in 2024.

Last year I updated my MacBook from the M1 256 GB to the M2 512 GB primarily to the need for additional storage. Had I been able to get the M1 512 at that time, I would have. Otherwise, I would have stayed with the M1.

Why do MacBooks have such a low SSD? Can't the storage be just a little bigger? It costs so much to upgrade it.

The M1 was the first non itterative computer Apple has released in over a decade or since and its why I will be keeping it until its ssd fails....Hell if they don't do something real like add all the ports back or make the ssd upgradeable I will look into the practicality of getting the ssd resoldered and give my money to someone more deserving. I only charge mine to 75% unless I go out so my battery is still at 92% so I won't need a new battery for at least 2 more years.....The value king :)

Spoiler : no. It's a web laptop, a Word and Excel machine, and it'll last as long as you won't smash it or physically break it. There's no reason it wont last 10 more years, seeing as people are still using their 2015 Intel MBP.

I’m gonna be so honest… my motivation for watching this video isn’t the content. It’s thirst. HOWEVER! Now that I’ve watched it, I would like to contribute that the M3 MacBook Air’s AV1 decoder makes a noticeable difference on KZitem, especially for videos where KZitem has only encoded the 4K version in AV1 rather than also offering it in VP9. Also, the Wi-Fi 6E really is much better in places with lots of 5 GHz interference, such as apartment complexes.

Shame Apple doesn’t make promises, but looking at their iPad track record, I would say minimum 6-7 years, so maybe 2-3 more years? It the or would be priceless if they could make it last 10. Then again they have a bad track record for gen 1 products. I just used the iPad Pro, as that was a gen1 product that got a lot of support.

I am watching a lot of youtube 4k videos on my macbook & multitask on it..

lol... i use it every day and am on 127 cycles and 96%. Installing apps like AlDente, or the 1001 out there really do wonders. Questioning whether an upgrade will be needed for at least the next 5 years. Undoubtedly, the clamshell design is still superior. Apple can bounce back and forth as they always do, but it is superior tell me otherwise
