Damn, ours has about 350k on it, and she's a keeper. Mine was stolen 3 mo. ago, got it back in 3 weeks after it was stolen. As most know that seldom happens, it was found by USBP in Laredo, TX. the thieves were running drugs in it. I know my wife and I got lucky, you just never see a stolen vehicle again, or there is nothing left of it. We love our 2002 F350 4X4 SRW crew 8' bed. We had our first date in it, plus it's a big, black, tinted out, cool looking truck. I was amazed the prices they bring when I started looking for a replacement, I had to do a lot to it to repair the damage done, and to theft proof it for the future use. I spent 2 weeks removing all accessible door locks. It is now electric only connected to my alarm/kill/fob. You can break into it through the windows and get in, but if you had MY keys you couldn't start it, the hood is chained and locked, and we have Lo-jack. Make sure and theft proof your truck guys, they are becoming very popular with the thieves, and the Cartel. Oh yeah, she has a LOT of performance mods.....

That can be solved according a good friend of mine who swore he could build me a quality transmission out of my E4OD, after this transmission failed a second time, but the first time was a converter failure, so it was replaced and nothing else, second converter failed almost emeditly, but I believe it was the transmission, who would think that a converter would fail so fast, and it was a good quality but only a single clutch set up, so after pulling it out and taking it to my friend, he found the issues and that my transmission was actually in very good shape for the miles on it and the burnt torque converter, he replaced it with a triple clutch converter and rebuilt the transmission with Kevlar racing clutches and we put a deeper sump pan on it that doubled the pan capacity, I was looking into going manual or possibly Alison or a C6 with a gear vendors overdrive, all options would have cost me way more money, but my friend has been doing this for over 40 years and promised me that I couldn't break it, we will see, but do have faith in his confidence.

Why would you own a 7.3 powerstroke, or a 12 valve Cummins? Cause they’re absolutely bombproof. Do you want a duramax or a 6.0 or a 6.4 or a 6.7 powerstroke with 250,000 miles? Hell no, but a 7.3 or a 12V, it doesn’t matter. Either one of them, is it a bit gutless stock? Yup. Does it leak oil if you look at it sideways? Yup. Is it loud as shit? Yup. Do they ride like crap? Yup. Will they go a million miles and ask for more? You bet your ass. And if they do break, they’re cheap and relatively easy to work on. They where both made with the motto ‘high mileage is a point of pride and a symbol of quality’ in mind. Treat them well and they will see you though anything you get yourself into. Change the oil, change the coolant, fix the oil leaks, and the motor will most likely outlast its owner.

Stock motor is great, albeit lacking the 32v head and valvetrain of a modern Powerstroke (even the 6.0 had 32v) and so HP is hard to make without studding and replacing coolers. One of my tenants has a 7.3 that was tuned and now it's blowing head gaskets. I have a studded 6.0 and a 7.3 IDI but I've stayed away from 7.3 Powerstroke because there's no HP unless you want to build up the motor, which leads me to buy the cheap $5k 6.0, since the need for high HP still requires bulletproofed, studded trucks.

I own a 2001 F350 with the 7.3 and it has never failed me, except for when it was new. An 'O' ring failed on the high pressure pump and spread oil all over the engine and the clutch. A new clutch and some cleaning has cured that problem. Onward!

290k + on my 2003. Never leaked, never any problems. It'll start 450+hp life with some 238/100's at 300,000 miles. The most reliable vehicle I own. I trust it at almost 300k miles, over my wife's super mint 70k mile G8, or my 100k mile Toyota. By a long shot. As a ford technician, I saw too many good examples of hardcore workhorses that are still on the road making $ this very moment.

I have an early 01 4x4 193+ Miles on it , I’ve done all the necessary upgrades. My Son has a 2000 4x4 both trucks are crew cabs his has 270,000 it’s his daily driver his also has all necessary upgrades . Wouldn’t trade either for a new truck. I’ve definitely pulled things with my truck that were extremely over the towing capacity with no problems. Last year I rebuilt the transmission under my carport, spent $2,500 on parts The torque converter was $1,500 . A few weeks ago i pulled my brothers 26’ gooseneck with 2 tractors and some equipment on it 70+ MPH trans temp never went above 140 In July. 7.3💪👍

His 7.3 pulls damn hard like a freight train. Great example of what can be done to these power plants can do in 2022.

I special ordered a new 2000 F350 7.3 with a 6 speed manual 4X4 for $25K cash. I've upgraded to a Garrett Power-master larger ball-bearing turbo, 5" straight back exhaust, cold air, and chipped, it will pull a house off it's foundation. Always parked in the barn and under 150K miles. Best thing about the 7.3 is they were pre environmental Nazi regulations of today. (like no cat. or def). I use it to pull trailers and can rip a 13,000 lb loaded 30ft Toy hauler over Vail pass 12,000 ft elevation and 7% grade in 6th gear at 65mph.

Currently building a 1995 F250 7.3 regular cab 4x4. Bought superduty axles and plan on doing an 8” lift. Has American force wheels on 37s, 5in exhaust, sinister tip and adding a set of amp power steps and power back window. Already gets thumbs up and it’s still parked on the driveway. Great engine and cool body lines! Becoming harder to find clean parts.

Can i ask a couple of questions since I don't know the first thing about diesels. I'm considering a 1997 obs f250 with the 7.3 and I live in cold winter Nebraska. What startup challenges might there be in 10 degree down to -20 degree weather because I'll be primarily using this truck in winter. Any idea if the 1997 ford f250 came stock with a block heater that you plug in? Or is this something I would have to add ( I've researched this and can't seem to find an answer). How risky would it be to purchase a sight unseen rust free one from texas ( i wouldn't know what to look for regardless of in person or sight unseen to be completely honest). Thanks!

Add my Scout that I flat tow and I'm gettting 8-11 mpg... depends on my right foot. She does everything I want her to do as far as performance.

Best is 99-03. Think there was a year 2000 with forged push rods that was unstoppable. If you can run into a 7.3 4x4 standard you can't loose. I've seen 450k miles still driving everyday. Low maintance, as long as it had diesel, oil, and air/filter it started and ran. Could go 15k+ oil changes and run all day long. Pull trailers anything, didn't matter. Weak point auto tranny, cold start ie. glow plug/relay, and small turbo.

I disagree with the fuel efficiency statement, granted I have CAI, aftermarket downpipe, and a tuner, I'm getting around 22mpg highway in my 94 7.3 without an intercooler and stock injectors / turbo, it's definitely not a fast truck by any means, but you also don't get these trucks for speed.. Or fuel economy lol, also that's a 3.55 axle and 5 speed manual transmission

I currently have just over 250,000 on my 97' and it runs like a top. Change the oil and use Cenpeco diesel fuel additive. I paid $3000 for mine 7 years ago with 175,000 on it. I had the trani professionally rebuilt a year ago for $3500.00. No tuning and never plowed with. I will have this truck till I die. Great for hauling the boat and equipment trailer and picking up lumber, going to the dump you name it. $80,000 for a new diesel. I don't think so.

Not only would i own a 7.3 Powerstroke, but I do own one. It is, however, the new body style, a 2000. Very little smog and bonus forged internals. I just bought it with 373,000 miles and drove it back to California from Nevada. She's not perfect, and I'm doing all the maintenance all at once, so I have a baseline for the what is likely to need repair in the future.
