And technology marches on. I’ve owned my GN since I was a kid in high school in late 1994 and now have a turbo T. Black and white. Just a quick correction or two.... the 84-85 non intercooled cars were rated at the 15.8 sec 1/4 mentioned here. The 86-87 like the one here were rated at 235 and 245hp, 360lbs, zero difference in hp. Mags had it at 14.5-13.8. I’ve taken a bone stock 87 to a 13.5 several times (and a couple 16sec passes but we won’t talk about those). Also taken a bone stock GNX to a 12.98 @ 106? (I think it was 106). These cars seemed to be all over the place when stock. I think there are two main reasons besides the weather making a big difference even for a turbo car. Boost control: wastegate base was around 10-12psi and the ECU would spike it up to 17 and back down to14-15 psi assuming no knock. The problem is the ECU has no idea what the boost is at. The MAP sensor on these cars is for the boost gauge, not the engine. It just hits a certain DC based on its map. I’ve seen these cars run 11-12psi and I’ve seen them running 17psi bone stock. Most I’ve driven were +- 1-2psi though. The other issue is what you saw here with the rolling coal comment. A bad 02 sensor or any number of things can cause it to go rich and destroy spool and top end power. It’s open loop at full throttle and latches onto the last closed loop correction. If you can see black smoke at the launch it’s going to be a boring ride. These cars bone stock running correctly with a decent driver should be able to go high 13s consistently and trap from 98-102mph. They’re best at getting off the line hard (relatively). Even with the stock 215/60/15s Car and Driver managed a 4.7 sec 0-60 time in 1986 at a time when sun 10s were quick. This one looked like an 8+. There are plenty of regular cars that will beat a stock GN but this one was closer than it should have been. I still love this series. Oddball matchups are awesome and put some perspective on things. Probably the most impressive thing is not just how quick the Hoonicorn is, but it’s consistency and reliability at that level. It never misses a beat nor does Ken but I was a little nervous watching the Ford GT roll/standing race and the 30 minutes on the launch assist. A testament to the engineering and the driving.

They weren't the fastest bone stock but they hooked and booked while most V8 muscle cars in the 80s and early 90s were running poorly and or spinning at the light. Huge weight difference, plus the 245hp was slightly underrated; the real number was more like 260-270hp. The 276hp GNX was closer to 300. Cars were underrated for insurance reasons and because the Corvette was only 245hp in '87. An 87 GN, was also rated at 355 lb-ft from the factory -- probably a lot more than the Hyundai's N/A V6. On a cool day and in perfect tune, the Buick makes nearly 400 lb-ft. The GN was typically a 14.2-14.5 car (some ran as quick as a 13.9 out of the box)-- not sure why they kept banging on about it being a 15-second car. That was only true for the '84 and '85 versions.

I learned the hard way if it’s rich enough to see smoke you’re not spooling till mid 2nd gear and you’re going to be down in mph on the top end too. Needs a tune up starting with a new 02. Should have been a solid 10mph difference in traps. Still nice to see a GN on here. It’s fine if it loses, technology progresses, but I would rather see it lose or barely beat a non performance SUV with it running 100%. People around here seemed to think every GN with exhaust should run 10s. I felt like there was such a reputation to uphold that I didn’t take mine out unless it was on C-16 and set on kill. The GNX clone running around here did his best to undo what I had done. Good clone but he raced and lost to every stock 5.0 in town. Why would you race a 110hp carbed regal? I always pushed mine as “stock with exhaust”. With that dumbass out there people began to say I had “$20k in the motor and nitrous” (literally said exactly that) when it was a well tuned 109 with the usual stuff. There is a 276” stage II GN in the garage with the same wheels on it that rumor has it may have slipped in place of the 109 once. 86-87 were intercooled. 84-85 were hot air. But when people refer to a GN, it’s always an 86 or 87. And I’m not sure where you got your 1/4 mile numbers, but the GN was rated at 14.0 and the GNX 13.4. However my dad bought his 86 brand new and went 13.80s bone stockade eventually 12.20s on a untouched motor and stock turbo. All he had done were valve springs, slicks, open exhaust, and a few other tricks. But ultimately a stock car. To this day he’s never had the heads off the car and it ran 11.85 when he last raced it over a decade ago. Only changes were still valve springs and a small te-44 turbo. Anyway sorry for the rant, but I’m still trying to figure out we’re 15.7 1/4 came from, cause that’s way off.

The lowest hp a C4 came with was 205 and in 1987 it had 240. They also ended the Crossfire Injection in 1984, the only year it was in a C4. And GM didn't publish any quater mile times. Those were done by magazines during testing for their articles.

History of the Turbo Regal. 78-82 Regal Sport Coupe turbo charged carb 2 or 4 barrel. 1982 first Grand National and only a handful are turbocharged still with the carb engine. 1983 Sport Coupe name changed to T Type no GN production and same motor. These Regals are commonly called "before black". 1984-1985 first fuel injected 3.8 SFI turbos appear. These are called "hot airs" since they did not employ intercoolers as of yet. Grand Nationals are all black from here on. 84 GN has the Leir Siegler sand grey and dark grey interior. 85 GN has the black/grey interior as did the 86/87 GN's and GNX. 86/87 turbo Buicks add the Garret intercooler and get a big bump in HP/torque. 87 adds the 547 GNX's done by ASC. 87 also has the Regal T Type name changed to Regal Turbo T and the Y-56 Turbo T trim package could be added to any base Regal even without the LC-2 3.8 SFI-Turbo intercooled engine option ordered. The last GN rolled off the line on 12/11/1987.

82 was not turbo charged, some say a few were but I can’t confirm. 83 was a turbo t type. 84-85 was a non intercooled grand national and t type. The 1986 t type and grand national was inner-cooled. The 1987 grand national was inner-cooled as was the t type, now renamed the turbo T. They also had some regal limiteds along the way with the same power plant each year as that year’s gn or t type/ turbo T. 1987 had the gnx, 547 well optioned grand nationals modified by asc mclaren for slightly better performance. Including a ceramic impeller on the turbo, aluminum honeycomb wheels, a more aggressive tune and a state of the art rear suspension with ladder bars and torsion bars that actually caused the rear to squat instead of lift when brake standing to build boost before launching.

Exactly! It is really hard to drive one that bad to get that time. I owned 11 of them over the years and know what a stock one will do and the worst, high mileage Gn/Turbo Regal I ever base lined was a 14.20 and that was with a heavily gunked up intercooler and intake track as well as needing a huge tuneup. I did not hear this guy even foot brake it to bring it up on boost for a launch.....a real bunch of idiots. Most decently tuned, pure stock GNs will run high to mid 13's all day with any moron that knows how to drive and launch a turbo car. This whole video had me wanting to just throat punch those morons for mis representing a Grand National. Sure was easy to get those things into the high to mid 12's and I got most of mine into the high to mid 11's and daily drove them. Sure, even an 11 second car is not really fast by todays standards with turbo LS's with junkyard motors ripping down into sub 10 second passes in whatever they are in, but still.....a friggin 15.8????? Come on, the stupidity of the entire video has me about to block all these morons involved with this trainwreck of a video.
