The mix with the API 512v sits together nicely and has more depth and width too.

Came across this video and I know I'm 2 years late lol but to me, the API without the 3:1 had a thicker sound and seemed to widen the guitar a bit, you can tell by the end sound of the guitar at 3:00. The others didn't sound bad but I that's what I noticed. Thanks for taking your time to do this video!

The difference in sound was so minimal I really don't think I could pick out one over the other in a blind test. Thanks for the comparison!

I love when people do videos like this. Great level of detail and consistency with your workflow so its really hard to "akshully" any of this. It really helps to bust myths and put the gatekeeping to rest. People can still say whatever they want about their golden ears and thats fine. At least now, anyone with a normal set of ears and half a brain can listen to the tests in this video and safely make up their own mind. Great stuff!!

I kept hearing huge differences, followed by you saying "There's almost no difference".. especially with the API. I'm listening via an Apogee Groove.

I have to disagree on the amp guitar tone shootout. To me there was a massive difference in the overall clarity and listenability of tone between the API and the other preamps. If you listen especially to the initial attack and tone of the guitar, there is a clear winner in the API even with the DI boxes. Listen to the extra warmth and stability overall, but specifically in the top end. One thing to keep in mind is that if you're recording with lower quality preamps, that are stacked in a whole mix across different tracks, the lower quality tones build up to create a lower quality mix. Investing in at least 1 quality preamp will make a world of difference overall in mixes, and give depth to your tones and mixes

I use the RME Babyface because of the quality of the preamps. The Neural DSP plugins really benefit from more gain than you would think.

I thought the AIR option was and should only be used on vocals! Good to know.... once again, great video! I am somewhat happy to hear that "my" entry level Scarlett 18i8 can keep up with higher end preamps!

I can listen small differences in the mids, but all of then are great tones, btw, anyone else listen something strange in the quad cortex? Like some kind of phasing or something like that? Dont know if its due to something related with mono/stereo input

Either the volume was higher on the bass with the DI Box or the frequency range sounded slightly wider I guess? More low end a little wider top end I think for the bass that might be relevant But again Slight change

Yeah, I did hear a bit of what your talking about myself. I certainly noticed a bit more low end using the DI box and mic input. Like you said though, it’s still a very small difference.

damn focusrite sounded like mush to me, it has some kind of like weird muddy distortion going. I didnt think there would be that much difference. Scarlet gets a lot of bad rep among producers and now I see why QC is balanced and sounded the best in the mix. API is really clean and transparent(cleaner than QC) but too scooped Preamps and Di boxes can have different Z impedance values from like 500 kohm to 1.5m for high z inst input I think and sometimes its even adjustable like on axe fx fm9 mb QC as well. So that impedance makes a ton of difference in terms of freq balance and ADSR curve with passive pups, actives dont care as much tho I can plug em into 20 kohm mic input and they still sound decent

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. You must have some very special ears because I'm not hearing as big of a difference as you describe. I don't disagree there are differences, as I mentioned in the video, but those differences aren't massive. Especially in the context of a full mix. You mention the Scarlett gets a bad rap and I've heard that too but do note there's a different in preamps between Scarlett models and generations. Here's an excerpt from the product info on the 8i6 3rd gen I used in this video, "Two award-winning Focusrite mic/instrument preamps are onboard [...] The third-generation Scarlett 8i6 advances the state-of-the-art in USB audio interfaces with two upgraded Scarlett mic preamps". The preamps in this generation aren't the ones that I've seen "producers" talking shit about. Anyways, all that to say, be sure you're forming your own opinions and not allowing outside influence from "producers".

Man…. How is this a real comparison? No real amps? No real mics? No neve style pre? I’m sorry, but this doesn’t prove an “expensive” preamp matters or doesn’t matter at all to me. I can tell you for sure, if you heard my BAE 1073 with a real amp, anyone that thinks a good pre doesn’t matter these days would drastically change their opinion. And what does “matter” mean? If the point is you can absolutely make great records without an amazing mic pre, that is probably 100 percent true. But it doesn’t mean they don’t “matter” either. Furthermore, you really need to mic up an amp man, there’s just no substitute when doing tests like this. You are comparing the DI, great. But the API for instance IS a Microphone preamp: use it for its actual intention.

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. This video is targeted towards the bedroom musicians who might not have the budget for fancy preamps or real amplifiers, cabs, mics, etc. I would have loved to test a Neve style preamp but I don't own one and wasn't about to drop another $1,300+ just for a this comparison. Maybe if I'm able to get my hands on one in the future I'll do another comparison. I'd also love to do a comparison with some real miced up amps & cabs but again, I don't have those on-hand and don't have a reason to justify the expense given how great amp sims are these days. If I'm able to get my hands on some one day, I'll see about doing another comparison. Again, thanks for watching.

Perhaps instead of criticizing, which is not constructive, you do the comparison and share. I'm sure many of us would love to hear the difference as well, from your perspective. However, Jeremy is offering a service to demo inexpensive gear that would work for those that don't have awesome expensive gear and possibly a supreme studio for state-of-the-art work.

@@Shred_Rocket state of the art? A BAE preamp can be had for around the same price as the API…. The quad cortex is how much again??? Exactly, that thing ain’t exactly cheap either. I’m sorry but I think it’s perfectly fine to criticize or give an opinion if you put up a one sided video. I enjoy the content on his page for sure, really I do. But this doesn’t paint a real picture at all, and further pushes regurgitation of unfound truths in the pro audio world. The novice musician who doesn’t understand what an api preamp is PRIMARILY used for is now going to think gee, no need for that, sounds great! Mic up an amp with your Scarlett and then the api/neve style preamp and actually see the difference, it took me one chord to think OH, THATS why I spent the money I did on a BAE. It’s not subtle like these videos at all. You have to give context, and I think this is really a narrow viewpoint, that novice players ( that the video is supposedly intended to be for) don’t fully understand what’s happening here: IE, we are comparing DI’s, not an actual mic’d amp where a higher end preamp most definitely does show it’s worth. THAT is my point. Like I said, I’m not insinuating that you can’t get good tone at home with any of these tools, that’s been proven for years. I’m simply pointing out that fact that what is being displayed here is one very small part of what a piece like the API for instance, is used for. A more extreme example: are you not gonna buy the quad cortex now for 2000 dollars because the DI “sounds the same “ as the 200 Scarlett? Of course not, it doesn’t make any sense, because obviously the quad cortex is primary function is not “just” a DI.
