Jon Meissner - My baseline 2012 MBP had 500GB HDD storage. When SSD's took off, they were expensive. Nowadays SSD prices are very comparable to HDD prices from 2012. We should be getting 512GB MINIMUM. My 2014 MBA had 128GB(even that was inadequate) but I just got a microSD adapter which sat flush on the side and barely noticed it. Apple is monopolizing storage on their laptops at a huge markup (no conspiracy here). There should be absolutely no reason why the SSD's are proprietary. Apple needs to ask itself, "how much is too much". The clock is ticking and it's only a matter of time before consumers leave.

YES! THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WANT macOS, why? Everything works way better than Windows, I've been using Windows since 1998, that's 20 years of windows AND ALWAYS crashes, every program, anything that i used, eventually it would crash, screwing important projects, and that is just one thing, a lot of times I had to format windows and start from scratch because something wasn't working correctly, I've used windows laptops, custom builds PC's and eventually, I always have gotten crashes, malfunctioning, which requires, restarts, uninstalling a program, repair something, format etc. Now I have been using macOS a year now and I can finally feel relieved, my MacBook 2017 does the job, I edit my videos in final cut now which works way better and crashes way less often than Sony Vegas 15 that I was using, also all my music production applications behave way better and crash way less in macOS. I'm a guy who has been using Windows for 20 years and has tried all windows versions AND ALL OF THEM have caused me trouble, always, no exception. NOTE: I'm no iSheep, really not a fan of the crazy prizes of Apple products, that's why I only own the MacBook 2017, no iPhones, nothing else and if I ever build another PC, I'm gonna make it a Hackintosh, no more windows for me. But wait, there's more! Once you've invested in Apple's ecosystem, you'll have to buy a $1,500 phone ánd a $1,500 tablet with it! But seriously, you just copy-pasted the exact same argument so-called 'switchers' have been using... since like, 1998. You are just trolling, only the 'switchers' ever experience that much problems. Times & Tech changes, it is the the constant. Everything ain't for everybody, and that's okay. I opted for the 6-core i5, 16 GB RAM, purchased with edu discount. I shoot & edit 1080p (using HitFilm Express-more everything than iMovie & free), I use GarageBand for audio production & music creation, the "iWork" apps for productivity; nothing Adobe or Microsoft and my Mini has been just a great machine. @@snazzy "proper cooling" totally overrated in 2018. Make it quiet and tiny! Who cares about how it handles heat? Lets ignore the fact that you can get a NUC, stick it in an aftermarket fanless case, and install whatever operating system you have the patience to figure out ... I get that Apple's position hugely relies on the general lack of computer literacy amongst the general public but really it's like they're not even trying to make a product people can use. I really like MacOS but if you've got the vaguest inkling to research how to play around with computer tech there's no reason to pay for the anti-consumer Apple product. You can literally upgrade that M2 machine to have 16GB unified memory + 512GB SSD and pay a total of $1,000 USD (or $70 USD more than the i5 Mac mini). And with the 10-core M2 Pro Mac mini - the lines get blurry between the M1 Max Mac Studio and the M2 Pro Mac mini... And the base M2 Pro is only a little over $300 more than the i5 Mac mini. People think Macs are better for video because they have Final Cut and high DPI screens. On the PC side you have far more software and hardware options allowing people to skimp on features they don't care about. Windows PCs also tend to have better backwards compatibility with software than Macs. I've seen some scientists keep old G3 macs around because new ones won't run their expensive software.

I just bought the Mac Mini with the 3.0 GHz 6-core i5, 256gb of storage and 16gb of ram. I know, that I spend too much money and could've gotten a PC with the same specs and a dedicated graphics card for a lot less. But what for? I am a fan of MacOS and I love to work with it. I already had my monitor, mouse and keyboard here, I've spent 1.300 Euros and I am very happy with my decision! With the tasks I am doing it does not thermal throttle and even for casual gaming (League of legends or csgo) it works just fine. The thermal throttling can be reduced if you just change the temperature when the fans kick in and it doesn't overheat anymore. Easy as that!

Great video! As always, so many great thoughts. But honestly? I love mine. I bought the base model to replace my Hackintosh & it’s exactly what I need. I get 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports (something difficult to do on a Hackintosh). I can use it as a desktop at home. I can pack it up & take it with me as a portable Mac, too, negating my need for a second Mac. (I use Luna Display + my iPad Pro as a monitor, and my personal workflow doesn’t require a Mac most days for anything mission critical). The internal storage is good enough & I can use external storage if I need more. I don’t do a lot of video or anything, but it would be OK for basic editing and I could always get an eGPU later on if I need it. It might not be for everyone, but for me? It’s exactly what I need.

Inky Hates Most Things Absolutely! Any car will get you where you’re going, but the one with tight handling and heated seats will make it much more comfortable. Windows 10 is an ugly, clunky mess that constantly gets in the way. You can ignore it and learn to tune it out, but it still interferes with getting things done. macOS has its own flavor of stupid, but on the whole has far less “friction” along the way. For example, Apple’s trackpads are second to none. The one in my 2008 MacBook Pro has smoother response and better gesture handling than any modern PC I’ve tried. The hardware matters, but it’s really the OS that makes it possible. People spend tens of thousands more for a car they enjoy driving, so a few hundred more for your OS of choice isn’t really a big deal. That said, I don’t like Apple’s current hardware or pricing, and I fear it’s only going to get worse. Now is not a good time to buy in...

Here's the state of Mac. I'm a developer and UX designer. I've owned a $4k MacBook Pro from 2017, a Trash Can Mac Pro, an iMac Pro, and numerous other desktop and laptops from their lineup for the last 15 or so years. As I type this, I'm staring at the screen of a 2015 MacBook Pro, a far better machine (at $1600 used) than the $4k 2017 Touchbar MacBook Pro it replaced. I say replaced, because I got so tired of the issues with the latest MacBook Pro design that I actually downgraded in order to feel as if I had upgraded. I no longer support much of Apple's hardware iterations, and if it weren't for being tied so tightly to their ecosystem due to my work requirements as a dev, I'd switch back to my PC for work in a heartbeat -- a PC, mind you, that I've set up to dual boot MacOS, which outperforms a nearly $9k Mac Pro at one third the price.

Hey Quinn - I got a 2018 Mac Mini and so far I really like it. I got the i7, 500GB SSD, and 8 GB RAM (I upgraded it to 32 GB on my own). Based on your comments (and my previous experience with Apple thermal paste as well as my experience with the new mini), I changed out the thermal paste to Arctic Silver 5. I experienced the same slow down and lag before I changed the thermal paste - it ran in the mid-high 50s C under normal load. I didn't notice much difference until I transcoded a full length movie in Handbrake after I applied the new TP. That made the mini max out in heat/speed, etc. Once that was finished and the mini cooled down, it ran in the mid 40s C under normal load, and all the lag/slow downs are pretty much history. Thanks for the idea to change out the TP and I am looking forward to your video on the subject.

100% agreed. I get it - inflation causes price increases, certain parts cost more than they used to due to high demand or low supply, etc. But... $900 for a base Mac Mini? Or, look at their other offerings - an iPad Pro that isn't useful until you spend almost $1k on it, a MacBook Pro with a touch bar that everyone hates for *at least* $2k (and often above $3k) with no user-replaceable parts, the Mac Pro that hasn't seen an update in years, their routers that were, at one point, some of the best out there but were discontinued... all on top of increased inconsistency in their product line, flimsier parts (my 2016 MBP's keyboard is failing... again), and the need for more expensive displays to make the macOS experience even worthwhile (Mojave specifically on a non-retina display just looks... bad). I honestly commend Apple for some of their decisions, like bringing USB-C and TB3 to the forefront, and bringing best-in-class features to their devices (3D touch is amazing on the iPhone, and their trackpads are far and beyond the best out there), but I can't help being bitter about the last few years of Apple. They've gone from being pro-focused to posh-focused. They know that some rich kid will have to have that new $4k MacBook Pro so they can type their next screenplay on at Starbucks while watching KZitem videos all day, and they're OK with that, instead of providing quality products that "just work" at high, but reasonable, prices. Apple needs to get their stuff together instead of worrying solely about the shareholders - it's just not the same company under Tim Cook.

I lived with Apple's fashion sense for hardware because of a need for the OS. The Mac OS smashed Windows in my render tests of a high polygon models in the same versions of a 3D rendering engine on both. Here's the new problem, "IMHO", Apple's hardware quality, lately, hasn't justified the ever larger gut wrenching price increases. Add to that, I've had more issues with the OS than before as well. Even though I need the OS and to go forward with another Mac, I don't think I can now. I'm adding these words in hopes that more feedback like this in open forums will lead to creation of an Apple product line I can continue to work with.

Being a long-time Mac fan and full time Mac OS user for 10 years, I'm with you: Apple are making it DIFFICULT TO LIKE THEM! Overpriced devices, underwhelming performance, lack of significant updates, and so on. In all honesty even if I still far prefer Mac OS to Windows, I'm staying on Mac because of my buy in, the time and money I put in apps. But FCPX is also lagging woefully behind and pretty soon all the other apps really won't be worth it anymore... The age of Apple Pro and Prosumer dominance is dead. It's becoming the exact opposite: now, you buy an Apple machine or device if you want something that looks awesome, has a premium branding and is to be gently used... Reminds me of what happened to Porsche or Ferrari...
