GW2 used to be super toxic in dungeons. Idk about now. One of the reasons I quit. Their dungeon runners were so toxic and obnoxious. You were REQUIRED to have watched and MEMORIZED each path of the dungeon before even attempting it. You were REQUIRED to run a specific build and only that build. If your play-style was anything but that build you were labeled a loser and an idiot. You could get kicked at the end of one of the Arah dungeon paths and your spot would be sold for gold. Just a few days ago I was running Paradigm's Breach and the other two alliances wiped at the first boss. My alliance almost wiped too but my coheals rezzed me just in the nick of time and I immediately used LB3 and slowly but surely we were able to pick up the other two alliances and eventually beat the boss (mind you this isn't my first time running this raid. I've been running it for gear ever since its release). Throughout the entire duration of this raid lots of people were dying. I was rezzing people left and right but I didn't care as everyone has those funky days every once and awhile. You can imagine that people at this point were being heavily toxic to one another, throwing insults and just being all around impolite. Once we got to the final boss, it was revealed that only a handful of people were actually new (I think like 3 or 4?). So yeah it was definitely just one of those days. Lots of deaths (no wipes) later, we beat the False Idol. Promptly afterwards, me and my coheals were accused of not healing enough throughout the raid. I wasn't really paying attention to what my coheals was doing throughout the raid but I KNOW for a fact that I was busting my butt healing and rezzing people. Then I had a DPS lalafell also chime in (she was a party member and was being toxic throughout the whole run as it was) and tell me that I definitely wasn't healing enough and that they should know because 'they're a healer main'. I've been healing since HW. I've experienced all the healing reworks to date and I know I was doing my job well. The entire alliance was wiping left and right and surprise surprise! The healers still got the blame. Sorry that I can't simultaneously heal/rez and also do the mechanics for everyone (btw this wasn't a response to anyone, just a long rant xD)

Either they jumped to level 80 (which is something I personally dislike already because of the story) or they are just REALLY bad at reading skills. I only had problems with scholer, but that is like the hardest job besides Ninja and honestly not really worth the trouble you put into it. When I was a part of my WoW guild's heroic progression raiding team, our first few attempts at a new boss were totally focused on mechanics. Whenever we approached a part of the fight with a new or changed movement based mechanic, we would slow/stop dps and give 100% attention to correctly avoiding/traversing said mechanic. We did this because a couple of our members would quickly become overwhelmed and suffer sensory overload if they attempted too many new things at once. Once they had a solid grasp on the new stuff, these two players would proceed to consistently parse in the top 5% of their respective roles. When performing group tasks, finding the median between the best and worst performers in the group (wherever that may be) will always yield the most consistent progress.

Asmon is entirely right when he talks about learning by fucking up. There is most definitely a lot to be said for learning by fucking up. Certainly for myself; and I'm sure many others out there, fucking up at something I want to be good at motivates me in a massive way because I am way harder on myself, have much higher expectations of myself and feel disappointment to the point of self loathing with myself far more than anyone else ever could. When it's something that involves other people potentially watching me all of that just gets turned up to eleven. That being said it is often a double edged sword, at least in the sense that on the one side if it's something I am committed to then I will bust my own balls so much that it forces me to git gud as quickly as possible and endeavour to make as few mistakes as possible. However on the other edge of the blade if it's something I don't personally care that much about I'll tend to give up quickly because the motivation isn't there to enable me to power through the negativity. Surely I'm not the only weirdo who operates like this?

I think there's three big learning curves when it comes to FFXIV's difficulty: a. learning how your class performs, both in an ideal rotation where you don't have to take into account any sort of interruptions to your flow, and an adjusted rotation where you have to switch things up due to mechanics b. learning basic AOE indicators such as stack markers, pillars, meteors, etc. and what you're supposed to do when they happen c. learning how to work with your party to make things easier for everyone and increase DPS Generally I see people struggle with these three things. If you're looking at this list and going "Hmmm, that's me!" here's what you can do to help yourself out. a. Look up guides for your classes, and practice on training dummies for your rotation. Some classes like Dragoon have a very rigid rotation, other classes like Summoner are more based on phases. Get that feel for your class and how it works. Practice both inside dungeons and out - the best experience you'll get is in actual combat with other players. b. There are guides for aoes in general and individual boss battles, but try and find connections with patterns - ie, what do all of the line aoes look like? What do all the stack markers and meteors look like? Recognizing that mechanics are patterns that are often reused in fights will help you not just master the fights you struggle with right now, but prepare you for fights in the future. Many, MANY mechanics are reused in this game, just with a slightly different coat of paint over it. When looking at a boss fight with mechanics, ask yourself "Have I ever seen something like this before? Where?" Once you begin recognizing patterns, that's when you're going to have an easier time learning boss fights on the fly. c. Once you have those two skills mastered for your role, try and branch out into other roles. What annoys you about tanks when you play as a healer? What annoys you about healers when you tank? Remember those things and keep them in mind when you play that role - it will help you perform better within a team setting. Most of it breaks down to awareness, practice, and patience. You can do it if you have the desire to improve! And honestly, as a tank main I've seen Asmon improve a lot over the course of this game. No longer does he wiggle in place. He's pointing bosses towards the north. He recognizes the patterns older bosses have used and then does the mechanics. Yeah he screws up, but he's learning. He'll get there. And so can you!
@katarh
3 жыл бұрын
Even if you've been playing a long time, you can still find out new things about your roles. I'm a SMN and I do savage with a NIN friend - and one of the suggestions is to end DWT early for the final Deathflare to ensure it hits the TA window, since ending it early isn't necessarily a DPS loss but getting it in the TA window is a definite 5% gain. Started doing that a month ago. Now my NIN friend is mad because that one weird trick (okay, and a few other tweaks) ensured I stole the top DPS slot from him. XD

It was _really_ awkward at first and took me about a week to get used to it, so I stuck to solo stuff the entire time. But once I got used to it, oh my god, the difference was night and day. My rotations are so much smoother now and I can focus more on what's going on around me in a fight.

@@vair3427 That's a great breakdown! I mainly added teamwork into my comment because there's a lot of unnecessary friction that happens in casual settings due to not knowing how to make things easier for other people, ie. tanks wiggling and spinning the boss, healers putting a regen on the tank too early, DPS pulling aggro too soon. But yes, at the bare minimum, you really just need to get the mechanics of a fight down. Your parse won't be fantastic, but it gets the job done.

@@ExarchGaming I can say that is true for the most part. There are some key differences with it all as the years have changed. WoW now a days gives you your whole toolkit by like lvl 20. Yes there is flavor added in later but that is it and makes it suuuuper easy to learn rotations because well....WoW has a basic 5 to say 12 abilities/power boosts depending on character you play. Also along with that, generally with WoW you can ignore let's be safe and say 80% of mechanics all around. Now with FF, the first dungeons it used to be around the 30ish range is when you started having to pay attention because mechanics would one shot you or damn near. (Yes it is different now because the shit has been nerfed to make it suuuuper easy.) Those dungeons still taught you boss mechanics used for dungeons and raids along with teaching you to learn and figure out rotations and abilities to use between global cooldowns. Hell alot of times you have to switch up the rotation as you are lvling because you get new positions and abilities to fill and switch rotations which can be very hard to learn about by reading the description and thinking it is correct. (Let's be honest some of those descriptions aren't exactly perfect instructions.) I mean you can roll your face across the keyboard in ff and do alright but I don't remember the last time I could roll my face across a 19 button rotation lmao. You are right, lvling is the same. to this fetch quest or kill this mob, that doesn't change. It's the learning if your class while doing that is where the importance comes in. Now I know it isn't for everyone, you have those people that can eyeball and all the sudden it is like Jesus is at the fingertips. Most people need to learn and see it and die trying to learn it.

I was better at ninja that 99% of the ninjas I've found after literally boosting it to 70, leveling it to 80, and practicing the rotation in a stick until I fit all the globals in the trick attack window and I stopped sliding the cooldown. I leveled summoner doing the MSQ and I learned nothing, the rotation changed every 10 levels, I still had to look at a guide at 80 to stop sucking.

There are a couple things hardcore players need to remember. 1. no everyone has the desire to run ultimate/savage content. They're here for story, or whatever else and are fine with not being "perfect" You likely won't even find them in said content, so dipping into DF or normal dungeons/raids and screaming at people for underperforming is super off base IMO. 2. People have bad days. I've played dragoon since the game dropped. I read my tool tips, I know my rotations, I aim to as high on the hate meter as I can and doing as much DPS as I possibly can. I've looked up guides/compared what I do vs a recommendation. BUT I have bad days. I have days where I'm tired and make mistakes. I get mechanics, I know my kits, but some days my reaction time just isnt up to snuff. Im also the person who has no problem admitting if I've made mistakes. I probably messed up positioning, or my reaction time was really off, not everyone is like that either. Does that mean I or anyone else sucks or am bad at the game? Of course not. Somedays we just dont perform optimally and that's okay. I personally think folks need to apply a little more empathy to every situation. And I think being more empathetic could get people into easier situations where they're open to receiving tips, feedback, etc. The online space is such a toxic pool, that people are always on high alert to be defensive and protect themselves. So if folks can just apply more empathy to stuff, it can make things better.

I as a rule don't annoy people about their performance. They could be levelling a class for instance. I savage and ultimate raid on ninja and machinist but put me on black mage... Well I'm bad. But a couple months ago I wanted to level a tank and healer just to see what that life was like. 99% of the time folks were really patient, understanding, and helpful. Id ask for feed back at the end of the dungeon and apologize for mistakes along the way, or ask for advice on situations to know if it was a me mistake or something else. Same for healer. But ooph, that 1% of people who would berate me and tell me Im trash or should never play the class, quit the game, I must've jump skipped, etc just because I was learning or made a mistake was tough. I dont always have top performing mental resilience, so some of those were tough to digest. Thankfully, there were kind folks in the area who would DM me or message me with encouragement. Did a run of Heroes Gauntlet with an Astro who was for some reason in Nocturnal Sect, constantly threw away their cards, never cast divinity, and wasn't doing any damage. 0 combust/malefic/gravity which I noticed when looking at the party list because I was wondering wtf they were doing with the cards they weren't playing. As someone who also plays Astro, it's the first time I've been extremely confused watching someone else play the class and I wasn't sure if I should say something. And normally I would have, but I did have one experience in Aurum Vale where someone else in the party tried to give the healer advice which caused the healer to ditch the party at the first mini boss, leaving the party stranded. So unless they're beyond abysmal where it's faster to leave the party and re-queue, I usually don't say anything unless it's savage content. In that case that is a fast "ty4p" if the lead doesn't boot them right away.

This tbh. People boost for many different reasons. Some have more money than time. But you would never know if they actually took the time to learn their job.

Context is important.. Mechanically bad? Socially bad? Missing things that could improve the fight because the player is unaware or they exceed the player's reaction threshold, vs. actively working against the group by intentionally ignoring mechanics, or actively working against the group's goals.

I was doing Aurum Vale earlier and the healer had to leave because they did not equip their stone. So, another healer came in literally named Aurum Vale lol. The healer was so nice explaining the mechanics since we got wiped in the first room (my fault because I overpulled). Definitely the best experience I ever had in a dungeon since my previous dungeon runs I got a lot of quiet parties, LIKE A LOT. So, to the two veterans who ran the dungeon with me earlier, THANK YOU! (and the sprout dps too, thanks for being patient with me)

Oh god, my brother-in-law is like that, not just in gaming but with life. He listens to respond with bs rather than listen to understand. At first, it was frustrating to offer him advice just to hear him make up excuses for himself. Now, we just let him look/sound ignorant. We've literally given up on helping him, because it's a waste of everyone's time if they don't want help or have the desire to improve.

It took me several expansions to get Orange/Pink parses. I used to not dps back in the 2.0 days as healer and got into min maxing stuff at the end of 3.0. Was also told I sucked a few times. For some people it can be a few months, others it can take years to do very well. Just keep at it. I still learn stuff till this day.

Yeah one thing that sucks about mmo and playing with other people in general is that you are expected to learn mechanics from the start and it is not encouraged to dive in blind LeSt you giving people a hard time by your unwillingness to look up a guide before starting a new dungeon/trial/raid. It really robs you off that memorable spoiler-free 1st experience. Going in blind for 1st time usually be my favorite thing to do when gaming and I love learning things step by step through repetition and trial&error. but it seems impossible to do it in mmo. There are things you need to sacrifice for the sake of other people's comfort.

The mandatory multiplayer msq/etc stuff you gotta do just to get to the next area is bad. Hope that get changed in the future.

Like the Lancer I met while progressing Eden. The dude was facing the wrong way half of the time, ignored all mechanics, didn't bother avoid any AoEs and after he died for a sixth time I stop bothering ressing him. After the fight he said "Thanks for the carry." Is it even possible to have a sprout icon at level 80?

Yes, if you level skipped and powerleveled to 80 in Shadowbringers, it's totally possible. You get your sprout icon off after spending a certain amount of time in game. I think it's around 160 hours?

As someone who has played sports and online pc games most of my 25 year life, its funny to imagine the gamer logic of being "bad" getting used in the context of athletic sports. Like could you even imagine... First day of basketball tryouts; new guy bricks his first shot of the day. INSTANTLY, his 4 teammates scream out "YOU'RE SO BAD JUST LEAVE KEKW" I think it really shows that gamers are the epitome of the internets oldest inhabitants- Keyboard Warriors.

As soon as I sussed that slide casting was a thing it was like okay that's my cast and move and repositioning yourself via that. Myself I always found pvp very helpful as you can raid and dung and get by with half your skillset..that's not going to cut it in pvp.

My dad literally mouse clicks this attack bar buttons then clicks on the enemy. He’s gonna not be great at MMOs ever for that. Still enjoys em a ton though, and great on the economy and farming side though

it also depends on the people trying to teach you. they can be more destructive rather than constructive. most people are bad teachers.

So I'm currently a Sprout and just Finished the Crystal Towers Questline for the first 3 raids, For the first time ever, I was encouraged by the players to just go into a raid blind instead of spoiling the fight for my self by looking up a video on the Mechanics. If this was WoW I bet I would have been kicked from a raid having not even watched a video before hand. idk about other peoples experiences but mine has been of the utmost Positive since joining. And from a WoW Pvper to a FF14 Raider it's actually fun to PVE for once. I actually really enjoy the FF14 community having been so helpful and Positive.

7:28 this assumes every job is 100% balanced in terms of the damage they can output and assumes that everyone has the exact same gear, thats the only way to do a fair comparison, playing a weaker job or missing a few good items and having lower damage than someone else doenst make you automatically bad at the job/rotation/game

I know the optimal rotation for all jobs I play. I learn every fight considered endgame before I do it unless it's a story dungeon before spoilers. I've cleared a few ults. I am extremely lazy when it comes to gearing and I am often wearing the crafter made gear off the mb instead of using my tombs. The middle ground exists and I feel like there's more people like me then the two extremes of not knowing buttons and fully maxed sweat mode optimally gear gods. Read your buttons and know what indicators mean. There's no excuse to do that much.
