True to an extent but it depends, not necessarily so if you've found the right one! My wife is generally fine with my indulgences with audio equipment, 2 and 4 wheeled vehicles and even gun collecting--she figure's at least it keeps me out of trouble and it's far better than if I were frequenting bars and pool halls (which I have absolutely no interest in anyway)! Of course there's give and take, I find it's a whole lot easier to explain yet ANOTHER component or the latest release of Yes's Fragile when i already own more than I can count so long as I cheerfully pay for the latest astronomical vet bill for one of our cats! And the look on her face was priceless when she was skeptical of a turntable purchase some years ago, but then I had her put on a set of headphones, dropped the needle on a Lindsey Buckingham album, jaw dropping and look of disbelief saying it sounded like he was right in the room with us!

Back in the 90s my Dad often hit up garage sales. One time there was a full stereo and speakers out on a lawn, and when he asked what it cost a woman said "I want all of this gone before my husband is home, so ten bucks a speaker and you can have the stereo setup for 20." I think of this story everytime I am considering new gear...

And how do you figure the difference between "distraction from life" and "consumption of life" I think the difference should be when the hobby is bringing you joy, vs when you spend so much money on the gear you don't enjoy anything anymore.

@@SergeySedlovskyI don't think many people will be such a good judge of themselves to figure it out - like car drivers deciding when they are to old to drive. I think when it stars to affect your work and family/friends is the tipping point. Personally, going on audio forums has helped keep me sane. But "bringing you joy" is about as good a metric as anything.

The best way to avoid danger to your bank account is a little self education in basic Audio and Electronic Theory. This will equip you to eliminate the snake oil that infects the hobby. Concentrate on the important areas, such as loudspeakers and room acoustics. Most modestly priced electronic components are very good these days an are not a weak link in a system. Don’t waste your money on expensive cables, cable lifters, Audiophile Fuses, power regenerators etc, etc. even so called Hi-Res music is questionable. Above all, trust your ears and recognise how easily the brain can be fooled.

This is a GREAT question! Any passion, taken to obsession, is indeed dangerous! I dont care what it is! Its dangerous to your mental health, its dangerous to your relationships, its dangerous to your financial health....i could go on and on. I believe that this is part of the problem with the audiophile community. This obsession with squeezing out incremental changes in the system that you have, tends to contribute to the elitism that exists in the community. It contributes to the snobbery and attitude that many in the community yend to exhibit. I believe that is a part of the teason that our community does not grow as much as it could or should. I may be in a tiny minority of folks yhat feel this way, but at 66 years old, i have been into the passion of sound for over 50 years. Growing up i was always passionate about music and sound. It contributed to a large portion of my life, from enjoying listening to music, to playing and recording music for a significant portion of my life. As a teen, i remember looking in the windows of high end audio stores, screwing up my courage to walk in and listen to some of the gear and more often than not being chased away with condemnation. Being hollered at to get away from the gear and to leave the store because obviously i didnt have the financial means to buy. Those were the days of Macintosh, GAS, Carver, SAE, Soundcraftsman, RTR, Magnaplanar,Thorens, and so many more. Truly the glory days of HiFi. I was left with no option but to save and go to the big box stores of the day and learn by trial snd error. Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui, Kenwood. You know ..the mid tier consumer electronics. My first new real system was a magnavox self contained turntable/ amp with separate speakers. I wore out many albums on that system! Slowly i began to but one piece at a time, listening to friends systems, friend of the families systems etc. I could have been guided and educated so much more easily had i been taken by the hand and made to understand by mentors that were few and far between. If there is a future to this hobby, it is in OUR hands to inspire, educate and guide the next generation of enthusiasts. If we dont, all that will remain is bluetooth and iems. Please watch around your environments and reach out to younger folks and try to help them to gain a passion for this hobby.

Assuming the clouds open up and the angel's start singing, I will again feel close to my goal. @@QoraxAudio well for tubes yeah, but if tubes are in the picture for a hifi amp it will always be extraordinarily costly diy or buy. Its the same for guitar amps which are pretty easy to make but expensive either way. On the other hand if money is really the limiting factor there a ton of hifi/class a amplifier with power transistors that cost a fraction of that, who can operate at a safe voltage and that can mimic tubes exceptionally well, a Le Monstre is my favorite but you have other circuits in that fashion.

It’s never easy to see and hear that gear that you know you’ll never get to afford, but, there are always choices to make you fit within your taste and budget boundaries. So the key is to get educated first before making decisions that will satisfy your taste in audio, without forcing or compromising your level of happiness in life, and that includes sharing it with others, specially if you have family. Yes it is = you stop listening to the real music you've been into your whole life - because you realise it's not recorded with 'hi-fi' in mind. Instead you seek out loads of random crap no one really enjoys just because it shows off your system. The deeper down the rabbit hole you go - the more you become ever increasingly detached from the music, and ever more focused on the performance of the gear instead. Before you know it you're justifying 1000s of hard earned cash on tiny differences that are indistinguishable to nigh on everyone else on the planet... and possibly... if your truly truly honest with yourself ...even oneself.! Stick with what you have ...be happy

The problem is that the word "Audiophile" is as poorly defined as "Playback Quality". We have gear geeks with no real music interest and those focussed on cosmetics and we have music lovers that have no geekiness as well as everything in between. If appreciating music is your goal, there is no danger. If you are a gear geek or need to make a cosmetic statement, then the danger is that you will never be close to having found any answers.

Passion is tied to irrationality, and that sure is dangerous. "Passion" is fashionable cliché word; let's reduce its use in the English language. Rather use interest, dedication, or fascination, all of which have rational connotations, which are much safer. Both to your wallet as well your surroundings.

As always a great outlook. I think the key is to focus on experiences, not possessions. In audio, I love the experience of great sound in music genres I appreciate. I also had to learn a bunch of skills focus on the DIY aspect of the hobby. EE, CAD, woodworking and general problem solving. I think it is similar when researching and collecting commercial gear that fits your purpose. Where these hobbies become less healthy is if it turns into a mania to covet and acquire stuff. Same with cars, boats.... almost anything.
