Kubo isn’t going to spoon feed his readers emotions. Here now you should laugh, here now you should cry, it’s not his style he will give the readers enough that they can make up their own minds on how to feel about a situation or character

When i started watching bleach my idea of it was that it was an action shonen anime and that's what i got straight away from the 1st episode, and it's the reason why it will forever be my favourite manga/anime because it's not trying to to extend the story by giving every minor character a backstory or take 100 chapters of build up for small fights. Bleach has cool characters, nicely animated fights, excellent soundtracks and one the best character designs out there, it's a story that kubo succeeds at fulfiling it's purpose at every arc and what happened to the tybw was because of shonen jump magazine.

Even though One Piece is personally the story that makes me feel real human emotions the most and often makes me cry, I'd argue that Bleach is indeed very emotional. Vinland Saga peak is probably my number two anime/manga that makes me cry the easiest. When it comes to Bleach, back in the first arc, Orihime and her brother's story made me tear up and Ichigo's vow to dying Byakuya in TYBW hit me in my feels hard! Ulquiorra himself is beautifully done too. And I agree with you. I feel that new stories like JJK should look at Bleach, OP, and some other OGs when it comes to getting real, relatable, human emotions out of their fans. And that's coming from a huge JJK fan!

I agree with your sentiment. Some of my favourite pieces of media works on this principle. For example, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance by Park Chan-wook(same director as Oldboy and The Handmaiden). The film tells a story about 2 people getting tangled in a messy revenge plot. But the main cast are not characters(well they are but compared to what they represent, nah). They are embodiment of some ideals and themes. How revenge can affect a person and what is left of them after they finish it? Is a poor man's revenge same as a rich man's? I feel the same about Bleach. You have to care about the themes and the ideals different characters represent to feel anything. And it is already hard to first spot these themes and ideals with how Kubo writes. So I can see the disconnect. I think there is another reason as to why people feel Bleach has less emotions than Naruto or One Piece. It's because Kubo writes and depicts sad stuff in a more lowkey way. No offence to Naruto or One Piece(they are GOAT), but they make it pretty clear when they are trying to tug at readers' heartstrings. Bleach is very subdued in that sense. Take for example the end of arrancar saga when Ichigo loses his powers and says goodbye to Rukia. Like we only get 3-4 panels of them saying goodbye and their expressions. I bet this scene would have been a tearjerker in Naruto or One Piece. But I still feel emotions in that scene. Yes they are separating and it is a sad goodbye. But as you said, what it represents is what matters more. Ichigo isn't just saying goodbye to Rukia. He is saying goodbye to zangetsu, his powers, which stooped the rain in his world and gave him power to fulfil his purpose. One scene I always found bittersweet in Bleach was a very small and insignificant scene. It's when Hachi is trying to fix Orihime's hairpin while giving some advice on powers. Mashiro throws a tantrum about how Hachi was giving more attention to Orihime. Rose says "I think he is happy. We rarely meet anyone with same abilities as ours. It probably feels like finding a long lost relative. For Hachi, and probably others as well." We see a panel of Hiyori and Ichigo training. It is somewhat sweet moment. But this theme is connected to some many things and people in Bleach. Characters coming together due to shared pain of losing someone dear, Aizen's loneliness, Vizards feelings towards being thrown out of Soul Society, and much more. SO I feel more emotions from this conversation.

A lot of authors often resort to "sympathetic crying" to artificially make the readers have a stronger emotinal response to a scene, even if the scene on its own (its contents) shouldn't invoque that strong a response in them - usually making the characters bawl their eyes out on screen frequently (we see that a lot specially in One Piece, MHA, Demon Slayer). Human psychology & physiology then takes over and for A LOT of people, this technique works (some people even have a hard time containing their tears if they see someone else crying, regardless of the reason). Not to make it sound like it's some nefarious thing to do, but we can all agree it's a somewhat lazy way to write "sad scenes", manipulating the audience into having an emotional response when the situation probably doesn't even call for it at all. Now, not saying any scene where characters cry is like this, 'cause a lot of times IT IS justified for characters to cry and it makes sense based on the context. But an example where imo this type of lazy writing is employed - in this particular case, from One Piece - is when Kin'emon bawls his eyes out telling the straw hats how Oda died and most of the straw hats (in typical One Piece fashion) were not only shocked by what they were hearing, but also bawling their eyes out over someone they never even met or know much about. Now, this would be perfectly fine if this was their first rodeo, but it's not; by the time the Straw Hats reached Wano, they already had plenty of experience under their belt and were no strangers to tragedy throughout the years. So it's very odd how they still reacted the way that they did, as if they've never heard anything similar before. Imo that was a missed opportunity to show their character growth and make them feel a bit more grown up and determined after hearing of another tragedy - instead of trying so hard to make readers cry. I'm glad Kubo doesn't take this approach and that's why his characters feel way more real than what many other shonen do, which sometimes feels almost like a caricature.

Personally I see most of the times people cry in one piece it is usually justified by the situation or for a sort of comic relief/absurdism, but Wano specifically tried to force emotion more than any arc before so in that regard I agree.
4 ай бұрын
I agree heavily with that. Like for instance Dragonball is the story where death can happen the MOST and death is almost always wiped away due to the dragonballs, and even there they used to make deaths meaningful because the characters were the center focus of it. Now it’s meaningless again due to shock value deaths and oh no Frieza blew up the earth or Trunks mom was killed, but there’s no lasting effect to these moments.

if i cry, it is emotional. like the scenario this season when Byakuya told Rukia that he was proud of her. Yes it is. Most emotional moment for me was Starrk's last stand and death. He only wanted friends and his joining Aizen for that led him to a gruesome death while his final revelation that he wasn't alone just twisted the knife. Harribel's and her Fracciones near fate in the same battle was also tear inducing considering their relationship and what they mean to Harribel. Those are just two examples but yes, Bleach has its moments and even arcs.

Bleach is a darker and edgy work than most shonens, which is what makes it unique and differentiates it from its counterparts Naruto and One Piece, these being the greatest exponents of emotional stories and when Bleach is criticized for its emotional aspect of the work is because they compare them with these 2 animes and it should not be a negative criticism because it is precisely what differentiates Bleach from the others and gives the viewer different things, each member of the big three has something unique that satisfies people of varied tastes, that's why Bleach became so big because it had its own personality, however even with all this Bleach is an emotional work, it just makes it more natural than Naruto and One Piece that force moving moments, in Bleach we have For example the moments of Gin and Ulquiorra that without little or any of the resources that other works use to move, still make you cry, Tite Kubo does not force the pain or sadness, it makes it natural and organic. In this Bleach has also had a lot of influence on current works, in addition to JJK which uses the same tone and narrative as Bleach, neither MHA nor Chaisaw Man for example are emotional like One Piece and Naruto, even in this aspect Bleach has had more influence than the other two.

Bleach is more philosophical than sad emotions, but it has emotional moments in it but not as much as its counterparts. Naruto deals with a lot of basic stuff that anyone can relate to or imagine, like losing your parents, being alone, making friends, feeling guilt, etc. Its built on an sad path already from the get go and it utilize famous tearjerk music very well when there are emotional high beats (though its overused too much later on in the show). In one piece personally there are only two big sad emotional moments (in the anime), which is Ace's death and when Luffy thought he lost his whole crew and had to start all over again. In bleach Ichigo lost his mother, but other than that he has his dad and siblings to support him so you don't feel too sad for him, and the songs used often were melancholy music rather than pure tearjerk music like in Naruto. Bleach also often overused songs like "here to stay" and "will of the heart" in the anime where it wasn't really sad or didn't fit as much. However In TYBW cour 2 it actually utilized emotional music very well during Äs Nödt vs Rukia, this is where it nailed the ending part and conveyed the messages properly. You have Byakuya who lost his wife in the past and is left with only his adopted sister he cares deeply for, and the chemistry around the lesson part perfectly intertwines their relation to eachother. Byakuya in his own stoic way wants her to be able to stand on her own two feets. While Rukia finally getting appreaciated by her own adoptive brother for facing her own fear wants to make him proud, moments like these are important and is what gets emotional felt when things lines up.

Ichigo's story is that to overcome grief and depression. He overcame the guilt of his mother's demise. Throughout his adventures as he soul reaper he came to understand that people just have to die in order to move on in the afterlife. Every soul needs to be cleanced. The prologue established Ichigo's philanthropy. From than on he would be a Shinigami who'd risk his life to save other soul. He doesn't distinguish from races. Humans, soul reapers, hollows and Quincies are all the same to him.

Kubo is actually a masterclass mangaka imo. Bleach easily became my favorite anime/manga with Kubos amazing abilitiy to hammer in themes, beautifully use characters to carry on messages, and perfectly incapsulsting the imagery of the various situations that the places and characters we come to love go through all while its packaged with a compelling story and amazing art. I think the main problem that new readers need to understand is that the dude does not spoonfeed allowing for reveals to have even bigger payoffs as well as leting the audience be further inmersed in the story if you are the interactive type.

I think bleach on the surface seems to have a limited emotional range from a normal viewers perspective. And that's why whenever you have these other shows that show a wide variety of emotions constantly. The more serious moments aka the more "Emotional" moments seem more impactful which leads to people saying those other stories are more emotional than BLEACH.

Bleach has emotional moments but it doesn't reach the heights Naruto does imo. This is likely because no characters close to the MC dies in the story. Remember when Jiraiya died, Kishimoto took time to show Naruto's reaction and sorrow. The audience is able to sympathize with him in that moment. The closest thing Bleach has to that is when Ichigo and Isshin talk in front of Masaki's grave. Take when Tosen died for example, we are given no time to linger on it because we immediately go back to fighting Aizen. Gin's death scene also suffers from this I feel. Were I Kubo's editor, I'd tell him to take some time and have the characters linger on those who had passed away (extend Rangiku's personal farewell to Gin or have Sajin visit Yama's grave and show when Yama took him in.)
@commirevo89
8 ай бұрын
I agree with this actually. I think had Kubo stuck with his original plans to have Byakuya die during the fight against As Nodt things would have felt different, but there were definitely missed opportunities in the Arrancar, Hueco Mundo, and Fake Karakura Town Arcs. At least we got Kyoraku visiting Ukitake's grave in the final chapter.
