I tried looking into a boat tour but was finding it difficult to know who was operating. We only saw the big boats docked up and no activity on board so assume back at the beginning of May with restrictions, they just weren't running. It would have been nice to learn a bit more about what we were seeing. Perhaps for a future trip!

I'm a regular on the broads and I've been going for many years, I've hired a boat for a week from Richardsons base at Stalham on many occasions, if you have a look on my channel there's some videos with a quick walk round of some of the boats I've hired. The only videos of boats I have that Richardsons still have in their fleet are Escapade, and San Domingo, both of which are ideal for couples

Hi Caroline (Ms Knox?). We were looking at Norfolk Broads vids on YT and stumbled upon yours. Thank you for this vid. Firstly, we have been to the Broads but not boated there. Secondly, no toilet on that boat for a day?! Thirdly, we have (and we recommend this for one of your adventures) taken day-narrowboats out on the canals (they do have toilets, thank goodness). They are more expensive to rent, say £200-£220 per seven hours (depends) but they are usually accompanied by comprehensive safety and navigation instructions. Because day-boats tend to be limited in numbers (weekly hires are also available - but are often c.£1,000) it is very wise to research boat-hires on-line and book - casual booking is very difficult in high-season. As you're in London (I read your YT biog.) , there will be quite a choice but I'd recommend driving to either the Kennet & Avon canal or the Basingstoke Canal (Odiham - Galleon Marina) which are both good. You'll almost certainly be using a tiller, rather than a steering wheel. By the way, it is virtually impossible to reverse-steer narrowboats, so one has to do one's best, then keep adjusting by going forward a few yards and then reversing again - though some old-hands do seem to have the knack. Secondly (!) We love your style. This may be why, after a year, you only have 1,000 subs; you deserve far more, though more will come eventually. Your style (sorry to sound patronizing) seems cool, English, considered, intelligent and a tad quirky. Such a relief after listening to so many You-Tubers shout, talk fast, play loud muzak, generalize in ill-thought unintelligent ways. I don't think your style is what prevails but that makes it such a gem to find. Subscribed. Thirdly (!!), Actually, to be fair, many narrowboat YT channels ("Boat-Tubers") are also good. Indeed, there is one ("The Mindful Narrowboat") which is currently based in East Anglia / Broads and operated by an ex primary school headteacher and her husband - worth checking-out. The best two narrowboat channels (in my view) are "Foxes Afloat" and "Cruising The Cut". Both are very educational and both talk of canal history and boat issues (not just problems), as well as having beautiful cruising videos - both back-catalogues are well-worth exploring. Fourthly (!!!) From an ex-secondary school teacher to a current one, I wish you well and do enjoy the relaxation. Over the next weeks / months, we shall look at your back-catalogue - we're especially fond of The Peak District and Dartmoor, so look forward to those. Again, thank you for posting and best wishes from deepest Hampshire (where £2 for a tourist-spot ice-cream sounds like a real bargain). Cheerio.

Oh wow, this has got to be one of the loveliest comments I've had left on any of my videos and you've absolutely made my day, so thank you!! I did get a little envious of the bigger boats that people can sleep on, though there weren't many narrow boats on the broads. We have a number of friends who've in recent years moved from London to Bath/Bristol/Somerset, so your suggestion of both the Basingstoke Canal and the Kennet & Avon canals sound amazing,. If we split the cost between a few of us, it's probably going to work our cheaper than the Broads too. I'll for sure have a dip into those channels that you've mentioned and see if I can get some further inspiration! Sadly I don't feel like I did Dartmoor National Park enough justice (so of course am eager to go back) but there is 1 more video from there coming out tomorrow. I've not done any filming in the Peak District. We almost booked a week there for half term, but in the end decided against it for this year, though it's high on my list. Thank you again for your truly lovely comment

@@WhenAdventureKnox Hi, thanks for your kind reply; delighted to be cheering. Yes, many people travel together, sharing the narrowboat's cost. Hope you enjoy the narrowboat vlogs. Apropos the Peak District... It is in two distinct parts: Dark Peak (northern Derbyshire, based on Millstone Grit, hence Dark) and the White Peak (central Derbyshire, based on Limestone, hence White). Both are fab (I have bias - I'm from Derbyshire) but, if walking is one's aim, one could do worse than being based in either Edale Or Castleton (both Dark Peak). If you do that and vlog it, we'll be very interested in the films. Apropos Dartmoor: can one ever do it justice? Take care, cheerio.

Great idea to hire out your own boat for the day. It was more expensive than I thought but like you say you get what you pay for - you really don't want to take any chances with something that can sink!! Loved the Crocodile sign and the old wooden houses - very pretty. Interesting to see!

Hi Matt, thanks for watching 🙌 It still feels a little expensive, but some algorithm somewhere has decided I obviously like renting boats and I'm getting adverts to rent a boat here in London. The boat is no where near as nice, but for just 3 hours it's more expensive than the boat we had all day on the Broads. 🤦♀️ Silly London prices. I loved that Crocodile sign too, if I lived on the water, I'd totally have something like that in my garden!

I have to confess that outside of 'easy to reach' (i.e. fast trains out of London avoiding the M25 hell) I hadn't explored much of the UK's countryside. There is no steering whilst reversing, as the direction of the boat is made by the rudder at the rear (AFT) So, it's a case of using forward and reverse to get the boat into the position to moor

In regards to why are boats driven on the right. It's an international maritime rule that boats pass port to port, so you drive on the right hand side of the river. The easy way to remember your port from starboard is "port" is 4 words and "left" is 4 words, also if a boat has navigation lights for night time cruising the green is starboard and port is red (same as the drink😉)
@WhenAdventureKnox
3 жыл бұрын
Your comment has been amazingly helpful - I guess the international rule makes sense because when you pass into another country's waters, it's not like there's a defined border with signs like we have on land 🤣 And the 4 letters for port/left and the red lights like red port means it's engraved on my mind. If you're not a teacher then I think you'd make a fab one, especially for when it comes to memory retention! 🙌

Unfortunately, we can forget Norfolk how real sailing ,motorboats,etc look like ... the views are boring and swimming in the canals. Everything limits us to the vicinity and there is no freedom here. I won't mention the river through the dirty Norwich. This is good for amateurs who have not seen real lakes, islands, open spaces, nature. The only place worth recommending is the Lake district a few hours from Norwich.

Such a shame to hear you say this as I enjoyed my day out on the broads... but I would fully confess that I am the 'amateur' that you wrote about so it does make sense. I'm actually off to the Lake District soon, any recommendations you'd have for up there?

There are 7 rivers that make up the Norfolk Broads with over 200 miles of waterways. Some parts will be polluted with heavy traffic from cruisers at certain times of the year whereas other parts are crystal clear waters & wild swimming is a hugely popular past-time for many on the Broads. I'm sorry to hear that Richard's experience left him with such a negative opinion of Norfolk, let's hope he has the opportunity to revisit the area & enjoy the beauty that the Broads has to offer. Of course the Lake District is equally as beautiful & from my experience in visiting both parts of the country over many years, the more you visit, the more opportunities to find the hidden treasures which leave us feeling overwhelmed by its beauty.
