I am glad that you are covering this. I pay Booktok dust for a variety of reasons. I didn't want to stick my nose in other folks business but I do find it very interesting how folks performative protesting went out the window when that Iron Flame book came out. I've realized most folks are not trying to go out of their way to not read nonfiction to learn anything. Don’t even get me started on these special edition books. So annoying! People talk a good talk then swipe or tap their cards.

That’s why I have started to wait to buy a physical book until after I’ve read it. That’s why I use KU and the library. Exactly, nothing will change but love your thoughts.

Points were made! And there is this vicious cycle as well regarding consumerism. I've been backlisting for the past two years which has kept me in the library and used bookstores. And at this point some authors are so big that they feel untouchable and will not see a decline in sales in real life sadly.

Yeah there are plenty of authors who will just always sell regardless. They have plenty of publisher and general public support. There's a lot of great books to discover on the backlist too and I'm grateful for my library.

I had to completely step away from booktok and have been relying on my kindle recommendations based on books I’ve read.

Honestly those Kindle recs are the most accurate because Amazon recs you based off the stuff you've been buying and reading

I’ve been avoiding booktok for the most part because the books being promoted are “fast fashion” 🤦🏾♀️ Count me in for getting tired of the consumerism conversations. We can talk until we are blue in the face. People are going to continue to buy, buy, buy.

My thing is some of the same people who will speak about it will run and support those books

@@MsWOCReader Yes. It's frustrating. It seems like having the pulse on trends is more important than being firm in not supporting those books.

@@MsWOCReader 😂 You took the words out of my mouth. I was going to add that to my comment earlier because it grinds my gears. Although negative, hate reading is still putting attention on something that has more than enough support and traction from the hype train. 🙄

Thanks for continually pointing to the benefits of libraries! That's where I get most of the books I read. (I know libraries aren't accessible for everyone, though they could be more so if, as you said, some people would stop voting counter to what benefits them and their communities.)

It was actually very comforting to step into a library the other week since I'm so used to just borrowing books via Hoopla

❤❤ The comparison of books to fast fashion was interesting. Trends have been around for the longest and they aren’t going anywhere. TikTok is not making publishing like fast fashion since publishing (especially in the YA space) have been following trends for the longest.

Publishing has definitely been following the same approach for more than 10 yrs now and that's part of the reason it's so stagnant right now.

i went to barnes and nobles and read some of the popular trendy on booktok and they romanticized abuse and calling it good like ETF
