My insta comment got a huge response so I’ll say it again here. There’s nothing wrong with breeding hybrids AS long as they are sold as what they are… and not passed off as some unique cool new morph of gecko or specifically… colubrid snakes. Seems to be one argument that makes sense. So glad you brought it up

Personally I have no issues with a hybrid animal when it comes to these geckos as long as their is full transparency and aren’t mixed into pure lines since they can still be fertile, some hybrid animals provide an interesting use such as a mule and if these provide no use besides research and a cool addition to the pet trade I don’t think that’s a bad thing, I think all of these species are abundant enough in the pet trade and won’t really provide any risk to the lines, such as something like a dart frog hybrid could, that I can’t support, I don’t think these hybrids are a bad thing, but it could be if they were in the hands of the wrong person

I mean this is a ridiculous thing for folks to be upset about. People have been crossing captive animals for millions of years. Think mules. If the animals are genetically compatible, they must share a relatively recent genetic ancestor. When they diverged, some traits went one way others went another…that’s how they became different species in the first place. In the case of genetically compatible geckos that are all from New Caledonia, we’re talking about a literal island that has unique genetics. Genetics that these geckos all share! Making hybrids to get the best traits between them is only “bad” if those traits breed unhealthy animals.

@@TikisGeckosyeah for real. I think what you’re doing is cool. I’ve always wished there was a market of something that was a bigger or longer gecko with the crests and eyelashes of a crestie. With breeding it may be possible to just make bigger cresties but getting a stable line would take decades. With this method, you’d save a lot of time. assuming you continue to get good genetics, a hybrid line may become genetically stable. You’d probably have to cross back and forth a few times in early generations… but bigger cresties that aren’t just fat asses is certainly possible Your geckos are both beautiful by the way!!

I've got both chahoua & cresteds, but don't personally see myself producing hybrids. I see nothing wrong with it per se, but I've got enough projects lol and can't see myself investing the time/energy in it. It's fine imo as long as they're healthy and clearly listed as hybrids. Nice points made here.

My issue comes into play when unethical individuals do not handle breeding hybrids the way you do. You do everything appropriately and I don’t have an issue with hybrids themselves. It’s people who lie and have unethical practices I have an issue with. As for the geckos themselves- as long as hybrids are healthy- I’m all for them. They’re super neat looking.

I don’t mind people creating hybrids as long as they are HEALTHY. For example, say you make a hybrid but on average those hybrids only live 5 years compared to 15-20 years or have a lot of health complications, then I feel that is wrong because you are lowering their life expectancy for your own curiosity and experiments.

You took the words from my mouth! As long as they are healthy with a relatively similar lifespan and good organ function I think the idea of hybrids is cool. Otherwise producing fatal babies or geckos with deformities for your own experiment and is so wrong 😢 only saying since cresties are generally healthy animals

There are so many different hybrids across many species created, I don’t think there is anything wrong with yours. I also agree that your decision to keep the normal looking hybrids in your facility is the right one. In my opinion if there is cross breeding esp having documents of male was this breed and female that breed. Especially for those that go down the line back to 3/4 crested ect but want to sell them as such. Like herbed wolves or savanna cats or bengals. People cross breed a lot of animals.

I don’t see it too differently as mixing dog breeds. Like the whole poodle mix thing we still have plenty of pure poodles around. Just advertise them as what they are and I don’t see a problem
@Navikevi

Except that there is a huge problem with certain pure bred dogs that do not come in Merle, fluffy, or whatever color but they are being crossbred with other breeds, bred back so they look like the original breed and are marketed as a rare pure bred dog. That’s exactly the risk of these hybrids too.
@jdssurf

personally I just see nothing in the hybrids that I would want more than the natural ones..I think they are perfect as is, and I see the natural forms flooded and I would hate to see everyone jump on hybrids and the rest just sit..... your right about the breeders needing to make sure they dont get out looking regular and you think ppl wouldnt do it based on economics but, Ive been around this industry 35 years and Ive know way too many bad people. Love your vids take care

Hobby hybrids🧐! Most dogs are hybrids! I work in veterinary care as turtle and reptile specialist. I see all types of accidents/hybrids and to be honest they’re some of the strongest animals compared to original. While most won’t make it in the wild for the hobby it’s great! It takes the pressure off wild collection. Hybridization isn’t new, turtles cross in the wild often. I think where people find issues are in the details, of some you mention, fertility, price, life spans, ect. I haven’t bought many animals over the years and I have been looking at yours often. I wouldn’t mind taking a few hybrids to study for a period of time. I love mutts😂😂😂. I’m one so to speak😅. You guys do great work and I hope you keep it up. I don’t inherently have a problem with the hybrids. I think most people just want one for pets that are cool, I mean I definitely plan on getting one someday. But the argument you have that they are recognizable as hybrids, and they’re not very fertile is flawed. Because if it’s bred back to the pure gecko for several generations, you introduce new colors and patterns with the fertility and structure of the original gecko. Then suddenly you have a new “morph” that can and will get introduced to cresteds or chahouas or whatever. I see the same issue and arguments about poison dart frogs. I see the problem in the pure bred dog world with introducing breeds that produce colors and fur types that don’t exist in the pure bred lines. Then they breed the dogs back (usually in bred/line bred) so soon they produce dogs that look like the pure bred dog but produce the colors and fur of another breed and they’re marketed as a special, rare coat type of this pure breed. It will happen with the geckos imo, but honestly there’s nothing to do about it. There are good preservation breeders of pure bred dogs and tons of BYB and puppy mill breeders. There will be the same with geckos. It just is what it is.

It is ethical to create hybrids if and when you decide to sell or give away offspring if one discloses that the offspring are hybrids. Case in point, there are a number of hybrid colubrid snakes in the hobby and guess what? Those ethical breeders and sellers disclose that they are in fact hybrids.
