Hmm... Canberra is the Raygun of Australian cities ... ... so spectacularly far from good that others initially suspect it must be a knowing piss-take until they learn that it was a genuine attempt to be the best they can ... and then it's just kinda awkward and sad ...

Many Australians think of Canberra as it was 20+ years ago, however, since then it has changed dramatically. During that time the population has almost doubled (450,000 approx.) bringing a hive of people together from different backgrounds. Every week (from September to May) Canberra has some festival or celebration happening, whether it be Floriade, multicultural, sports, arts, or museums, there is always something to see and do in this great city. And if you're a foodie, well Canberra has world-class restaurants and cafes to tickle your taste buds. The only thing Canberra doesn't have, and we are working on it, are the coastal beaches. So come and spend a week or two in Canberra, you will be pleasantly surprised.

We completely agree! We had plenty of things to do in our time there, we visited the Sunday depot markets (something we didn’t film). Hahaha there’s every possibility to form a beach, it won’t be long! - James

Worth noting, one of the benefits of living in Canberra is our proximity to both the NSW snow fields, and the south coast. Both are around 2 hours drive, so what we lack in, isn't too far away if you're able to drive to them - makes not having a beach not so much of an issue.

Howdy! I actually live in Canberra, and find it hilarious when these sorts of videos come up as recommendations. Yes, it is a very "hidden gem" city. Unfortunately because of the politicians the place does very much get a bad rap as a place everyone likes to hate (it's almost a national sport), and it was also designed more as a government city and less of an entertainment city. But there is a lot to explore and enjoy at different times of the year. The Multicultural Festival is awesome because of all the embassies here, and Floriade is a sea of flowers... just a few cool events that happen annually. Happy to hear you enjoyed your time here. Thank you for coming! :)

seat belts are compulsory! you can spend a week here, or a life here. you can't see all the main attractions in a day,! you needed to wander through civic and show us the magpie with a chip, head up to funky braddon, then out to see the penis owl, and then go explore the little nooks hidden in many suburban shopping areas. then there are many many beautiful walks in green spaces throughout the city and nearby. enjoy your travels!

I live just down the slope from that lookout, a bit to the right, in the suburb of Ainslie. I am glad you mentioned at one stage that you were here for the weekend (I'm guessing the 13-14 July?), because with the wind chill, this following week (15-19) has been around 8 degrees (feels like zero) and I would not have wished it on anybody. No idea why KZitem recommended you to me, but I'm glad you liked it - the place really is less boring than most visitors think. It is, however, about the coldest place you will ever visit in Australia - it's relative plain sailing from here wherever you end up!

@@JamesandJosieTravel Ha ha, no I couldn't see where I live because of the trees! Great chunks of the suburb just look like part of the forest from where you were, because of the angles. I'm glad you went back on a sunny day because it is a lovely view; just a bit useless staring into a fog bank 🙂 I'll keep checking in on your travels. I hope you enjoy the place - it really is a lot more than the stereotype of beaches, beer and barbecues. Now keep moving north and get warm! Enjoy yourselves!

@@JamesandJosieTravel Will do, but it depends on where you are going really. My family is based in Canberra, Adelaide and Tasmania, so most of my trips tend to be by air. If you decide to drive to Adelaide (which like Canberra is a hidden gem that few people talk about) prepare for a very long flat drive through central New South Wales, so take your moments of joy/interest when and where they come - there is a lot of flat, straight nothing in between! Most travellers go north along the coast. Apparently Northern NSW is lovely, but I don't know much about it, sorry.

After they left Sydney we had nice winter sunshine . Lol I like the hands on science museum and the war memorial in Canberra . Cockington Green was beautiful too with all the little houses and gardens just like in England .Lake George fills up with water then the water disappears . Thanks for your lovely video .

Burley Griffin designed Canberra with the Parliament halfway up Mount Kurrajong with a meting place above - because "the Parliament should never be above the people". When "New" Parliament House was made in 1995 they built it into Mount Kurrajong, to preserve BG's vision, and originally you could walk and play om its grassy slopes to realise that vision.... EDIT: "Canberra thinks you're boring too" - oh, touche'

Weather is appalling by Australian standards and even in summer on a hot day a cold wind usually comes up from the coast and you have to rush inside to put a jumper on. Then the night cools down which is why this city was chosen in the first place -cool nights in summer - that was the era before air conditioning!

canberra winters aren't grey and rainy - they're historically crisp pristine still and blue and the cool descends as the sun does, but the chill is delicious and you can rug up against it if you need. the summers are warm, but dry heat, not awful humidity. and we get all four seasons, unlike sydney. fabulous climate - not to be judged on a single weekend.
