Thanks for a good tip. I think this is a thoroughly sensible approach which does nothing to damage the coins. As someone relatively new to collecting pre-decimal coins these videos are a great way to educate myself.

Basically mate only clean mint coins, if its worn and dirty leave it dirty otherwise you end up with a very shiny worn out coin that doesn't look right. But if you clean up a mint condition coin its just going to look fresh out the mint again as theres no wear.

I realise this has been up a while, but you're the go to for coin detail - may I please ask, and it's with regard to an in rather nice nick 1896 penny, and 'cleaning' : mine has nasty blackish, almost greasy grime all around the 'teeth' indents and around the lettered detail on both sides. It's fairly easily dislodged by gentle teasing with a cocktail stick. Would you still advise this ionised water/soft plastic bristle brush tactic to dislodge said grime, without actually shining/brightening up the coin itself in any way ? Thank you.

You can also remove loose dirt and mild corrosion by very gently scraping it off with a toothpick - if done correctly it leaves no scratches whatsoever :)

If it's surface dirt, like seriously caked on, I shift it off with a bit of peg wood or a tooth pick, and just give it a wipe with a wet wipe and then a dry wet wipe, and thats it. I dont try to restore luster or shine or anything like that.

Soap and water, scrub off with a Toothbrush, rinse, dab dry with Cotton Tea Towel, NO marks at all.

What sort of soap, just normal as from a bar of imperial leather plus a cotton bud, just to lift greasy deposits? I'm not talking polishing the coin in a n y way.

Rubbing alcohol works well too. It removes dirt and residue without harming the coin.

I’ve a lot of very grubby old pennies and been too scared to clean them (been told to use ketchup !). But I think I’ll get myself down to Halfords and give this a go.

Don't use ketchup, it's acidic. I'd just use soap and water, and give it a scrub with a tooth brush, then give it a good rinse, and dab it dry with a Cotton Tea Towel. I did a 1931 Penny, and it cleaned up great, with NO marks whatsoever!

Hey! Why Nobody use a ultrasonic-cleaner for the coins!? Are you living in the middleage!?😉😅... I'm Not a coin collector, but i'm a mechanic and toy collector... And all my Star wars Figures are going in the "bacta Tank" If they need.😉... And all types of fine mechanical parts Like carburators, etc. ... You can use destilled water...or If the dirt is Harder you can use a drop of dish-cleaner (for maschines)... You don't harm Patina, it's only the dirt that came Out of every Corner without any mechanical Penetration...😉... My First Cleaner (for jewellery) costs me 10€ and runs until today, an rescues parts in worth of thousands. I would give IT a try...👍😉...greetings from Germany...😊

I dont think its always wrong to clean.. If the coin is worn then I say dont clean, but if you got a frigging mint old silver coin with a milk spot or something then I dont see any harm in using a goddards polish cloth to remove the milk spot, its not going to change the coin at all. I have a silver proof 50p set and they were milking, at this point I thought to myself "well its no longer a proof finish coin if its finish is ruined" so I took them out the capsuals (ohh noess) then used my goddards silver polish cloth to remove the milking, now the coins look 10 times better even though they are now left with hardly visable micro scratches, it looks more like a proof finish now than it did before cleaning. But each to their own.

Should really remove any green gunge that can appear on coins that have been stored for a period in PVC holders or verdigris otherwise corrosion damage might surely follow. But as for polishing - never! A polished coin is only fit for the dirty mug (paradoxically...) ❤

What would you advise for any such pvc causative 'greening'??
@herbidaceous

@@suzyqualcast6269Acetone is generally used to remove PVC residue from coins. It is an organic solvent in which the plastic dissolves but it doesn’t react with the copper or bronze. Although acetone is the main constituent of nail polish remover, it is better to use pure acetone as the nail polish remover may contain additives which can leave a residue on the coin. How long you would need to leave the coin in the acetone depends on how badly affected it is and the purity of the acetone. May only need 30 secondsor so, but could require several hours.
