I have been consuming a spoonful of coconut oil each morning, along side a Cod Liver Oil capsule (500mg) washed done with a pint of water containing two tea spoons of apple cider vinegar for nearly a year now and feel fine. In fact, my wife has had 4 colds this past winter, and out of those 4, only one touched me but only lasted a week with minimal symptoms. I am 53, physically active both in work and personal training regime. Don't forget that studies are driven by whoever funds them - one time butter was bad and margarine good. In the UK where I live, we were once told eggs were bad for you, now they are good. Same for the soft drink industry and sugar free products: studies show they are good for you, but who funds the studies? Unbiased, clear cut studies are difficult to attain, so everyone has to do their own research as best they can weighed up against so-called official studies.

Hello from Zimbabwe Africa - I am a Zimbabwean of British decent and eat a British based diet resonant of pre 2nd world war - fresh whole food - home grown vegetables - home cooked meals from scratch - aren't we lucky - I love listening to all your blogs dr hyman - how sad it is that America is facing such a food dilemma - I am two years from 60 years - in good health - loving life - coconut oil two tablespoons a day has helped my mother of 85 return to her obsession with crosswords!! Thank you for all your concern for all our good health!!

With increasing saturated (healthy fats) as supplements to meals like Almond and Coconut Butter/Oil... I've seen my fat grams double... and been able to reduce my carb intake by 30-40%, not intentionally. It just seems like it goes hand in hand with the adjustment in the diet where by increasing protein this seemed to be the trend. Feel better, more energy, weight loss and better results from excercising.

Could you please make a video explaining this seeming contradiction in this video, and the other video about whether butter is actually good or bad for you? How much butter can we consume if it is healthy, or not healthy for us? Thank you! Kim

the "wrong" side is the side trying to take your $$$. So ask yourself, which side is trying to take your money? The meat and dairy industry? or the plant industry? Hint: there is no organized plant industry. But meat and dairy... well you know the story about those guys. They're just a tad less confusing the the tabacco industry of the past. Remember, tabacco industry's motto back then and even still today: "tabacco doesn't cause lung cancer". Yeah.

I support no food industry, i rather get good quality product from people that produce good healthy food. That's why i mostly buy organic stuff from small farmers directly or grow it myself in the garden. It's just so damn confusing when some scientists claim a certain food is bad for you, but then use the lowest quality industrially produced version of that food in the studies or make false conclusions although studies were done right.

Hi there, I’m not a doctor but I am a medical student. With your LDL cholesterol being that high it sounds like you have familial hyper cholesterolemia which is a genetic disorder. The best treatment that I know of for this disorder is called Repatha which is a Pcsk9 inhibitor that can cut your cholesterol in half. Look into it and ask your doctor about it. It’s suppose to have less side effects than statins. All the best.

I reduced my dosage of statins and am pleased that it is now 160 after only a few months, but the small particles are up by 5%. However, I exercise daily, sauna daily, sleep well 7 hours nightly, and eat better than I ever have…. I am Apo E 3-4. Could that have something to do with it. I’ve made these changes because of the education I am getting from you. I love FunctionMedicine! Thank you! I even changed doctors to get a person more open to lowering my statin. Well it worked for my autoimmune disease, Sytemic Sclerosis. I cut out the carbs and took more satuarated fats and I started to feel healthy. I had no energy but felt healthier after eating greens, goats milk, porridge, cruciferous veg and fish BUT JUST NO ENERGY. A doctor on youtube said eating for autoimmune disease to get energy back one must eat high fats and lots of it. Surely enough my energy came back in drips. Now it's sustained. Had my brain tested as doctors thought I was getting brain disease but the surgeon said it's due to high Cholesterol as classic signs in the brain. I said that must be due to my diet. He said well you are doing healthy on it considering your disease but start to bring the fats (oils) amount down and see you later for change (appointment end of June 2017). however, if I ate the coconut oil with carbs now I would be hospitalised. So the end part of this video makes absolute sense. I'm also immunosuppressed and for the first time can't shake of this cold/vurus I have. Gets better then comes on again and repeating etc. I'm going to incorporate coconut oil again for a bit (not like before, just a spoonful in morning with manuka honey, turmeric, black pepper, lemon juice, fermented vinegar, spuruluna and mix of herbal teas) cos last year when I was eating it a lot, I didn't get any colds despite I was around people with colds and being immunosuporessed. It's about looking at the bigger picture indepthly. Coconut oil is good as long as you totally ditch the carbs otherwise you will have a heart attack or problems if you eat it with carbs.

Hello Dr. I grew up in as a vegetarian. College life and peer pressure has lead me to embrace western diet (bad idea decision on my part) 10 years later, in early 30's, still on western diet, I started having skin problems, dry skin, start using deodorant, my lips are dry, losing hair. My fart stink so bad. Then I was put on cholesterol meds and bl press meds. BTW, I'm type 1 since I was 15y/o. Last year ago I made a conscious choice and I did it cold turkey. No titration. I went back to vegetarian diet. I cut out bread, pasta and anything potatoes and it's kinda. No soda or processed except cheese. My sweets comes from raw honey and I refuse to cook it. My oils comes from coconut, butter, milk, seed and nuts plus I eat them raw. Happy to note, dandruff and dry skin have subsided, not wearing deodorant for months, my fart isn't stinky and sour my skin color did came back. I have full head of hair. I'm in the process of loooooosing weighting. I've lost 80lb of my first 6 months. Happy Thanksgiving to you, to your family, and to all your subscribers.

B Charron - i wouldn't believe people who spread the bullshit that fat is bad for you. Yet, they put sugar in all the food they removed fat from - so it tastes better. Look what low fat agenda did to Americans - they're the sickest nation on the planet. Yet people, which use coconut products as the staple in their diet (and eat no processed crap, especially carbs) are among the healthiest people alive. Combination of carbs and fat = disease.

The issue with referencing to certain groups of people eating certain things and not having cardiovascular issues is, that you would have to ask how long they have been doing it. If the answer is thousands of years, that group may have certain genes that protect them. Eg natives from Greenland have certain genes that make them digest fat better and eat enough A vitamins to kill other people - something that have killed multiple arctic explorers. So is that the case for the consumption of coconut oil on the tropical islands full of coconuts?

Just eat plant based whole foods (a lot of this, and organic if possible), or grass fed animal origin whole foods (in moderation). Reduce the sugar intake to the minimum, don't eat processed foods or fast foods. If you don't have time to cook, grab some whole raw veggies and fruits, and some nuts (walnuts are some of the healthiest -and nuts also in moderation), and you have a meal. Also, do some kind of exercise (like walking 30 to 60 minutes every day) and you will be alright. Use your intelligence to eat, good luck!!

I had mega inflammation problems....and have researched this extensively. Inflammation is caused by: 1) animal products 2) refined sugar products 3) flour products Avoid these 😁✌ Go for 30-60 minute walk per day. I recommend listening to Dr. Greger's book "How not to Die" Maybe you have audible? You can listen and walk 😁 ...that's what I do. WITHOUT trying, I lost 50 lbs, am back in a size 4..... and feel better than ever 🥰 You can too 🙏💜🍀👍

What do the Polynesians die of? Why is diabetes is rampant in the Pacific islands. Its when they get away from their whole food traditional diet. Are plant based saturated fats different to animal saturated fats?

I would like to see studies here, the one‘s you mention with the populations that are healthy with a high fat intake they eat while coconuts that have fiber for example counteracting the cholesterol effects. I do love coconut milk and coconut oil but your unfortunately don‘t cite your sources and explain too vaguely. MCTs are only a small part of coconut saturated fats and the main fats are ldl raising. if you have sources that show me otherwise please link them because i would love to still eat a lot of it. We all need to make sure we don‘t give in to our confirmation bias too much though, eventually science will tell.

The issue is, how much carbs are these people eating? Rice, beans, corn, and flour are overly used in their diets. Are they overweight because of meat or high carbs? Because from experience, and I work with Filipinos at my job, they eat lots of breads and rice filled items. And are overweight and pre-diabetes. I've been following keto for a year, and burn off 75 pounds in a year and too myself off the pre-diabetes status. Look at their diets.

Thanks Dr Hyman, I thank you for the information. I have been using Coconut Oil to help heal my stomach issues and digestive problems and it seems to be helping. My cholesterol levels were slightly elevated due to stomach lining inflammation and I am doing just fine. So, I highly recommend anyone having digestive or stomach problems to use Coconut Oil to help them as well. Have a great evening. Sincerely, Rob (Canada)

Hi, personal experience is enough for observation but not for direct conclusions as a doctor i think hr knows about these bias. i don't reject nor aprove what he says i just need sources and methodic experiments results to make myself a solid opinion. If those sources exist please give us the links and if not you will need to found experiments to be more credible. I know it is youtube but come on, i will need more than a convincing looking doctor to change habits to something as important as health.

No. True, many elderly have very low cholesterol because they are in a sickly condition. This biases the data. In no way is it good for an older person to have high cholesterol. But that is the type of bullshit study that the self-promoting hucksters like Mark Hyman mention.

After 1.5 month of keto my LDL went up above max limit. I did not find any 100% prove that fluffy LDL particles do not cause CVD (I have good HLD and triglycerides). Contrary, most North American medical institutions still consider high LDL as the most important factor that causes CVD. There is NO evidence and clinical tests on large groups of people that clearly prove that raise in LDL as a result of high fat diet will not lead to CVD. So I am replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats. I will try to stay on keto this way. Those guys on the internet just talking, but I have one life and I will not take a chance living with high LDL on keto eating coconut oil with bacon.

As Filipino and islanders in the Philippines, what I can say is coconut oil is the super super healthy food on the planet. some are saying fake advertisement because they want to sell their processed foods like, margarine, butter, cheese, canola, soya, etc, all of there contains saturated fats, and trans fat, and they are genetically modified food. Do more research on coconut oil, and you will be shock about the super healthy benefits of COCONUT OIL. Anyway they say olive oil is the best, yes I agree, but don't you know that it was not 100 percent olive oi, because they are mixing it with other oil, , better use virgin coconut oil.
