Great tips! I’m vetting bootcamps at the moment. I saw a few that run about 3 months straights 40h a week. It felt like that was way too crammed and you wouldn’t be able to absorb all the info. I feel like a program that runs 6-9 months 15-20h a week is the way to go. That way you can apply what you learned, reach out if you have questions and make sure you understand the material
@PeterElbaum

I'd say try some coding at www.freecodecamp.org/. Then, built a basic website, maybe a personal homepage. Make sure you learn some JavaScript and use it in the site(s) you're building. At that point, you'll have a sense for whether or not you could see yourself doing more of this. If you decide to keep moving forward, at that point you'll have bootcamps, online courses, etc etc as options. Hope this helps!

Question. I am 17 I was gonna go to college. Honestly though, I really would prefer not too. I code in c++ and build projects using arudino and I am fluent in python. I am not professional level at either of these. I know enough to make the things I want too. Anyway, I’m thinking of a coding boot camp. Do you think this would be a good option or should I go for a comp sci degree? I am not completely opposed to college it’s just another 4 years and frankly I’m tired of the education system teaching me about Columbus for the 4th time. I know what I want to do and I’d prefer to get there quick without all the unnecessary stuff. If it really is a big deal and college is seen in the field as far superior than the 3 ish years of experience I could get after a boot camp than I can go to college. I just did the UW Full Stack Flex Coding bootcamp. It's partnered with ED X. Anyway, I'm here because everything Peter said is correct. I watched his entire video and he hit on all the points. Yes, the bootcamp T.A.'s and instructors will encourage you to learn. Do not lean on them unless you've tried to learn it on your own, like actually tried out the code and wrestled with it on your own. Show them the evidence you tried when you ask your questions and tell them what you think went wrong. It's the only way to commit the lessons to long-term memory. And the lessons in bootcamp usually build off one another. You can't use ChatGPT as a strong crutch either. It can help you understand some concepts, but it's a very weak substitute for actual learning as coding it yourself will lead you down a proper learning path. Copy-paste will only get you so far. I consider myself a beginner, but I now have a direction. Thanks, Peter.

Trying to figure out if diving headfirst into a bootcamp will be worth it. I got my bachelors in math but have quickly found that simply having a background in math and nothing else doesn’t make you all that employable lol. I’m hoping the combo of my background with a coding certificate will help me out in finding a better paying job.
@PeterElbaum
Жыл бұрын
Interesting, the narrative around math is that it's very employable (I majored in Spanish, so that was no help!). I think learning to code never hurts, and you'll probably have a bit leg up on the algorithmic side of things which could help you get a big tech job if you want one. Knowing how to code certainly can't hurt!
@paulbrubaker473

A bachelors in math + coding bootcamp will make you an excellent candidate for entry level developer jobs, I highly encourage you to pursue this. You'll probably be just fine diving straight in, but self teaching programming fundamentals for a few months first will give you an even bigger advantage. In my opinion, worth it if you have a way to feasibly pay bills for the next few months. Based on my experience of two years college (math and physics heavy), then self studying JavaScript and Python, then coding bootcamp. I found a good job immediately upon graduating.

There is so much left out of a bootcamp curriculum its ridiculous. You don't do Mathematics i.e Engineering Mathematics , Discrete Structures/Algorithms, many useful topics like Theory of Computation, Digital Logic ,Cryptography etc are left out. They literally narrow your skillset focus down to a few fad jobs and the skills that are required to do them and nothing else so students lack the versatility and broad range an CS/IT professional . Id rather use the $20 - $30k money spent on them and do a diploma, at least they'll teach what they will leave out.

Hello! I am looking for a career change, and I would like to pursue web development. I am evaluating different bootcamp programs. My question for you, or anyone who would like to chime in is: Does taking a bootcamp through Udemy or course platform as reputable as taking a bootcamp through a university? I have seen a lot of bootcamp programs offered through universities, not as part of a traditional degree, but through the universities' continuing education programs. I'm sort of at a loss because I would like to commit to a program soon, but I'm uncertain if going through an established traditional university for a bootcamp is a better or worse choice than using a non-traditional course platform such as Udemy.
@PeterElbaum
2 жыл бұрын
I've heard of folks learning through a Udemy course - nothing wrong with that. I think the benefits of an in-person/ program or cohort-based online program would be the structure, accountability, and camaraderie you would hopefully get. Those would be hard to come by via Udemy. Just my two cents.

I don't know if you will see this comment bt it would have been really great if you could help coz I'm so confused abt taking this bootcamp course. I'm a mathematics graduate who have no experience or whatsoever in IT feild bt got into this tech company via recruitment. And for last 1 yr I'm working as a manual tester in one of their projects. I have always been feeling stuck in this and I wanted to upskill myself. So I tried out coding and tried learning html, css and nearly js..bt eventually it became really hard coz I didn't had a proper mentor or couldn't get into any communities or find any peers interested in this. So I had to pause all the studies bcoz of the struggles. I want to start again and I was thinking a bootcamp might help with a proper curriculm and realistic projects to work with.
