First of all, I want to thank Christina for her honesty and vulnerability. She speaks for a lot of us who are trying to change our buying habits but find it so difficult. For my part, I love to shop! I have friends who hate to shop and they ask me to go with them so we can make it a fun experience for them. One thing you didn't mention is that I believe we have a innate need for novelty. We want what is new and shiny. It's easier to buy something new, but all three of you are trying to show us that we can create novelty by creating new outfits out of what's in our closets. It's like a muscle, it needs to be exercised to get stronger. I'm working on it!

Christina I like what you said earlier about consumer psychology (being exposed to something 7-8 x then feeling convinced that you need it). I think what’s going on here is subliminal messaging or hypnosis. It may sound wild, but these marketing tactics of over exposing people to products is working at a subconscious level. Perhaps just simply being aware of all that will allow us to wake up!

Such a good conversation! For me, I think “de-influencing” has struck a chord recently because it feels like people are waking up with what I’d describe as a consumption hangover that feels awful. Instead of people feeling better about themselves because of what they bought, they realize the products failed to deliver on making us feel better about ourselves and now we’re stuck with things we don’t love and a lot less money in our bank account. Thanks for the conversation ❤

I have to laugh. Christina was talking about a 'highlighter' and I was thinking it was a highlighter pen like a Sharpie. It took me a few minutes until she mentioned make-up for me to realise!

Interestingly enough, I was influenced to buy specific highlighter pens when I followed the study and bullet journal community. No item is safe 😅

So I am understanding “de-influencing” mentioned here is about retail and brand influence; however, you all are focused and greatly influence me in self care, decluttering, slow fashion, and mindfulness ...I watch less retail oriented videos than I used to because I’m enjoying your content about sustainability, decluttering, minimalist, saving money and practicing positive mindfulness. 🤟🏻

This is such a timely video!! My feed has been full of N--trom hauls over the last month because of their annual sale, it was driving me nuts! I don’t watch haul videos as it doesn’t align with my core values. HOWEVER, I watched one as I really like a particular influencer, I used the content to make a two fold list, what I liked and what was comparable in my closet. I had no plan to buy but it gave me some insights into what I may want to wear more this fall. Thank you for a great topic today and particularly the honest opinions as to the struggles and conditioning we have been exposed to for decades.

I think people have found it "de-influencing" relatable for some of the reasons Alyssa had mentioned - global inflation & how much the cost of living has increased. I think privilege, people's perceptions of that privilege & it's context within a world that seems to be on fire & falling apart around us also plays into it. Seeing some of these content creators with multi-level closets or an entire room dedicated to skincare & make up seems more like a flex & just plain excessive as opposed to aspirational. Personally, I'm also just tired of being pitched products left & right. Wonderful conversation, as always!

It's so true that in the USA our culture pushes us to focus on the next thing to buy. Like Christina said we don't dig deeper. I don't look back on a shopping trip with fondness. My good memories are around the dinner table with great friends.

When you mentioned using some new highlighter, my brain took too long to realize you were NOT talking about office supplies. I was getting back of the brain excited at the idea of a highlighter pen for paper, and there being some fabulous new one out there. Whoops :) Make-up. My bad. I love that your chat is about one thing, but it is about everything. It is life. Keep it coming. Thank you for your time & efforts. It is refreshing to listen to women have a calm chat about things relevant.

I think you are awsome just because you don’t tell people to buy stuff! I hope the three of you will be doing this for many many more years! I feel that I really trust you and I hope your message of sustainability will inspire more people!

I had one bad purchase experience where I was influenced to buy an item and it definitely did not live up to the hype. I will put the cost of that item down as an educational fee. I’m much more intentional and picky about my shopping now. Also, I buy far less these days (I’m 59) because the quality of garments is so poor even in some of the higher end brands.

Absolutely love your content, your all amazing and its like your my fashion/style ideals come to life. I work in food/ clothing/ general merchandise retail and I am seriously considering if I should remain in Retail or not, but then at the same time i think it's up to people working in the industry to also try and change the shape of the industry. I have so many questions abut the future of sustainable retail in my head including: Should the retail industry be shaping consumerism differently? Should we be focusing our industry to a fix it, re-sell, recycle approach? How can we be more transparent about our goods? Should we change/ ban/ regulate advertising? I'm in my 40's and still in the process of changing my mindset, I'm a recovering shopaholic, debt free but still working on changing my behaviors and mindset. I'm decluttering myself big time and supporting my Mum to do the same. I'd never heard of De-influencing. I strongly believe we need to unconsum so much. It's difficult when the world I live in is surrounded by adverts, temptations, and trends. Thank you for making me think more abut this subject.

Considering that it's August, a Fall/Winter trends anti-haul may make more sense, unless you have a huge audience in the southern hemisphere.

And for me, “thrift with me “ frenetic videos were making me SO anxious . Like if I was losing something , imediately made me feel like thrifting for things that not were even in my list. I stopped following some of these. Like Signe said in other video, buying cheaper is not an excuse for buying too much. I need to give up for a while … shopping my closet is so much better .

Such a great talk! Ive just started a YT channel and I am talking about this type of subject and I feel the same! I’ve been through this journey of understanding my style and low consumption for more than 15 years now. So for me it feels so weird to show products because I do t want to “make” people buy more BUT I have to make a living… and the most liked content in YT is review and new products 😢🤦🏻♀️

But in the end isn’t someone telling you not to buy something just another form of taking advantage of our need follow the crowd? The focus on externals -the body and its garb-is the core issue.

Just started watching but my first thought is.. I completely stopped watching one KZitem channel because every single video is pushing new clothes/ products that even w 50% off or sales.. I just can't afford and it actually angers and depresses me because I can't pitch a certain product or products, clothes, shoes etc.. it actually affects my head / emotions so I just stopped watching even though I really like this influencer .. I'll revisit occasionally and if the content is other than per usual showing new items etc . I'll watch but otherwise it's a total turnoff.. that's my personal experience.. I do enjoy watching anti hauls sometimes... I'm more content if I don't shop or watch shopping videos . I appreciate what I have much more.

Don’t we need to start complaining about the shopaholic society! I think so many people are tired of looking at the News of all the bad things happening in the world like wildfires drought or flooding and then in the next second have an ad with someone saying buy this!
