It’s very clever how Natalie Portman advocates....she tells non vegans enough of what they want to hear so they feel it’s safe to watch the documentary rather than just say ‘ I don’t want to know’. Then when they watch, they make realisations themselves. Respect 💕❤️🙏

As much as this documentary may not be as good as Earthlings, Cowspiracy, or What The Health for veganism, it's making at least a small impact. It totally is like the vegan "100 point system"! Thanks for the insightful review. I went to the NYC screening last month and came away with mixed feelings like you but decided that Eating Animals is still a very worthy documentary. Many vegans feel the film was a sellout but I disagree because the film wasn’t made for vegans, it’s more for those not in the choir. My sense is that the filmmakers decided on a soft approach to reach as wide an audience as possible to plant the most seeds. They probably realised, as do all vegans, that most people will run when confronted with the unvarnished truth. Under the umbrella of the ‘human interest’ stories, they managed to deliver many facts about factory farming and eating animals in general. To add to your points, Craig Watts himself referred to chicken slaughter as murder and said that consumers can vote with every meal not to support it. At the end, there was the caption stating that he went on to grow legumes for a meat alternative company which was an optimistic message of renewal, in contrast to the uncertain futures of Frank Reese and Bill Niman. If I remember correctly, Bruce Friedrich did manage to squeeze in a bit about the ethics of eating animals in his limited screen time. Also, didn’t Natalie Portman include some details about the brutality of animal agriculture during her narration about the USDA’s huge conflict of interest? My memory of the film has faded a bit and your review is bringing some of it back (vaguely). On a tangent, no supermarket in NYC has the Beyond Burger in the meat aisle, unfortunately. They are always in the vegan/vegetarian section (but sell out fast anyway!). Also, at my local supermarket tonight a dad asked for help in locating vegan ice cream for his daughter, a new vegan. I was only too happy to show him the many options and thanked him for being a supportive parent. More people making the switch all the time! Anyway, good video as always. I always appreciate your thoughtful content. Sorry for the super long comment!

I agree. Watching your review I oscillated between concern and greater comfort with what the doc said, but I think this one isn’t for us. It’s a movie with Natalie Portman, billed as telling the truth about the problems, and in interviews makes it sound pretty non-threatening to meat eaters. Because of this, more will watch it. Our eyes are opened, and this doesn’t seem like it goes far enough. I suspect to many omnis that will watch it, this is going to seem harsh and difficult. This may be a gateway film, reaching those who would never agree to watch Earthlings, Forks over Knives, or What the Health. Now they can opt in to see the truth, and can learn more from there. I’m going to watch this doc, and it may help me begin the process of reaching family members and friends who are not interested in watching a “go vegan” doc, because they still plan on eating meat afterwards. Thanks so much for your review!

It gets people in the door & exposed to the truth. As a vegan activist, I understand the power of "planting seeds". So even though this film might not telling people "stop eating meat", it shows the truth & allows people to feel like it was a decision they made willfully instead of it "being forced down their throat". Thank you for this review :]

You guys are so great at this sort of thing. So reasoned, so real, so good at communicating whatever it is you're discussing. But most of all, no equivocation. Small farms are never going to be a solution to anything anyway, so it's just a really annoying red herring/ and a derailing of the vegan purpose and the task at hand. No animal exploitation, commodification, enslavement. Let farms re~form and grow whatever plant foods they can and are needed. Let them care for the animals they "have left', until the term of their natural life, or give them to sanctuaries. We must have a predominantly vegan world, and soon. And those poor chickens I had no idea Perdue was so "creatively"evil, and in oh-so-many ways. I can't fault myself for buying their chicken before I became vegan~ their TV ads with old Frank Perdue was like part of my childhood! ~ but I am disgusted now to learn what I was unknowingly supportingq~ in addition to the basic reality. Just a few weeks and their poor little legs can no longer support them. That's ...I can't even conceive of the mind that conceived this atrocity. Again, you wonderful people🙋💜🌱, great review, thank you!!

I completely agree with the "droplet" idea you talked about - maybe someone's glass is already mostly full and your "droplet" just lets it run over, finally. I became plant-based for health reasons - I have trouble digesting animal protein and am lactose intolerant - but my gateway to veganism was a book by German author Bettina Hennig called "Ich bin dann mal vegan" (roughly "I'll be vegan then") and this year I'm giving it to my Mum for her birthday :) I hope she'll read it and find something to think about. The book hasn't been translated into English, unfortunately, since it talks about all aspects of Veganism and I believe it provides a great starting point - especially for people like my Mum who likely won't watch KZitem vlogs :) (I'm also getting her a few cookbooks)

I saw that Gail King interview with Natalie Portman, about the film, and was a bit disappointed with Natalie ... but especially with Gail King, who said she saw the film while eating a hamburger, and had to put it down for a minute because of what she watched. I don't know. I think Ana and Brian summed it up pretty well. It's maybe not the worst thing for non-vegans to see, and it's sort of a mainstream release so it might get seen ... but it's probably not the best thing, either. I don't know if it helps or hurts to have a film that's halfway there.

I was very interested when I first heard this movie was coming out. I, too, would have liked to see more of the ethics involved with the slaughter of the animals and am super disappointed by you saying it wasn't...but I really do like Natalie's approach to making her veganism so mainstream. More palatable, so to speak, to non-vegans. It's not ideal, but she's avoiding the judgement that usually immediately deafens people when you say you're vegan. Again...far from ideal, but she makes a point of making it clear that she's not going to lecture you on your choices, and that her own husband isn't vegan. It's a baby step, but it really does help people's willingness to listen and digest the information, rather than immediately feel as though they have to justify their actions to someone.

Just want to say i love your guys philosophy and banter. Whenever I see your videos it's never overwhelming, just very informative and actually insanely helpful as I build my confidence into activism for all kinds of movements. I have a question btw. One of the things I struggle with is not knowing when + where the context is right for talking about veganism. I have been assimilating and sorting through all the data so I know what to say, but I def have communication problems & have a history of feeling like I come on too strong about my interests and values.
@ThoseAnnoyingVegans
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kurt! Thank you for your question! As for context, it depends. How long have you been vegan? Do the people in your life know you're vegan? We've found that as far as everyday conversations go, typically non-vegans will bring up veganism more than we do, and this is probably due to the fact that simply by being vegan, you are highlighting the fact that they are *not* vegan, which creates a cognitive dissonance, since the vast majority of people are against animal cruelty. So in these personal one-on-ones, we find it's best to always ask questions (rather than state facts), and go with whatever angle they use, so that you're on the same level as they are. Something that has helped us and many other vegan activists is to participate in your local Cube of Truth. Check out Anonymous for the Voiceless and see if there is a monthly or weekly Cube event taking place near you. This allows you the ability to practice your outreach skills on a regular basis. The more conversations you have, the better you'll get! We hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, please let us know!

I've been Vegan for a year and 4 months now. All the people who've been a regular part of my life now know I'm Vegan. I was Vegetarian before, since about Late 2014. Yes I agree with you, most of the time my parents, family, co-workers, all their friends and my sister all highlight my veganism before I do. I'm more shy and introspective than them, and do not quite feel comfortable speaking about it unless asked. I know that when I'm asked about my diet, that's a good context to share from. But once someone knows I'm vegan, or if they never ask about my diet to begin with (which is rare XD)- then that context is not there. I'm not sure how else to introduce it again but to wait for right timing. But even around discussions about diet, when I pipe in I do feel that everyone immediately defends themselves with all the excuses in the book & their right to always eat animals. My family particularly is of the ilk that says "We respect your decisions, so you should respect ours." I'm aware of some activism outlets, but they're not close to home. Also I've been very busy with such things as returning to school, changing jobs & covering financial fees to secure my future- so the timing is very poor atm for any outside activism. I'm also still dependent on my parents too. I have 1 friend whom I helped shift to Veganism and now she's aware of the consequences of eating animals- but we can't get together much so I have no one to join with, though we do talk online about global issues every now and then. Perhaps in the future I will have more to join me. I am working on building online connections with other vegans, but it's not a priority. However I do still want to be an activist for my family & friends- and have been working at improving my communication skills (including realizing the importance of questioning over answering all the time). I've also been investing a lot of time & effort into researching a shit ton of articles (on Veganism, Low Impact living, Minimalism, Critical Thinking skills, the future of our Economy & the Resource-based Economy/Venus Project) to compile useful & meaningful info onto a possible future website. That is my main future goal for activism then- as immersive research is definitely a strength of mine.

I just came across this video, and I appreciate your very honest review of this film! I saw an early cut of it at a conference 2 years ago and was not thrilled for many of the reasons you mentioned. I totally hear you on "gentle" message and how you still feel like it might edge people along even if it didn't specifically talk much about the wrong of killing animals...however, I am wondering if you are aware of Farm Forward's (and The Humane Society of the US for that matter) roll in actually INCREASING the the number of animals killed on small "humane" farms? www.upc-online.org/broiler/120619aspca_slaughter.html I have actually stopped talking about "factory farming" for the most part, because in the midwest where I am, "happy meat" is such a big thing, that as soon as I say "factory farming" nonvegans respond with "I get my meat from a small local farm..." or even "I kill my own animals!" Anyway, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that!

I watched the Boston premiere a few weeks ago with a q&a with Christopher Quinn. I had similar frustrations and mixed feelings about the film. I asked Quinn about the confusing mixed messages portrayed, and Quinn (a selective omnivore) was very clear that he, Foer (vegetarian) and Portman (vegan) didn't want to make a black and white conclusion for people and make a vegan film, but wanted to embrace the ambiguity and nuance and let people wrestle with it and make their own conclusions, which I can understand from an intellectual and artistic perspective. Quinn is a very smart and nice guy, and he's not a vegan activist so he wasn't trying to make another Earthlings or Cowspiracy. I challenged him on the realistic potential or sustainability of pointing people towards these Idealized heritage farms, and he does have his reasons why he thinks those are good options. But he also affirmed that lots of people have been walking out of the film turning vegan too. However, I fear that the vegan messages in the film (the word vegan wasn't even used once btw) will get easily lost in what was otherwise a sea of romanticizing heritage animal husbandry, and as a result many people who don't think to critically about the issues might miss the vegan message and find false justifications for their carnism. So yea, I don't know. I hope it's more helpful than harmful.

As someone who started off by switching from conventional animal products to free range "happy" animal products and who now is fully vegan, I think movies like this are so important. Incremental change feels much more doable when you are first starting out. I remember being very intimidated by veganism when I was first introduced to the idea. It is not extreme at all to me now, but it sure as hell seemed extreme to me back then. Movies like this lower the threshold to being involved in this conversation, which is important for the goal of having a vegan world one day.

Amit Singh I'd have to say I disagree. The chicken is not okay with it either. As long as you are taking steps to reduce your consumption, though, I have no quarrel with you. :)
@Dearmylove_i
6 жыл бұрын
Amit Singh If you consume animal flesh very rarely and in small portions, it probably isn't going to harm you. That said, you would really need to eat it only like once or twice a month. Eating meat once a week is obviously too much, seeing as the semi-vegetarians in the Adventist health study were overweight and had increased risk factors for disease when compared to vegans. And even if incorporating a few small portions of animal products a month into your diet was proven to not be harmful for health, which it has not been, it would still be unnecessary and thus unethical for both the animals and our environment. So reduce at your own rate but do not delude yourself into thinking that these products are good for any human being, the animals we breed and kill, or the planet we all share together.
@Dearmylove_i
6 жыл бұрын
Amit Singh But us breeding them is causing environmental damage. That is unethical. Us breeding animals to "feed the world" is also extremely inefficient. Think about it. You spend energy just by staying alive. Animals are no different. We grow plants that have great amounts of energy. We feed them to animals that use most of that energy and it is lost to us when we finally slaughter and butcher them. Not to mention how water intensive the animal agribusiness is. This process is so wasteful it's crazy and, again, unethical. We could feed the hungry of the world if we all switched to eating plants. Instead we selfishly feed all that energy to animals instead because of tradition and because we like bacon. People in westernized countries do not need to eat animal products to live and thrive in this day and age. This makes it unnecessary. The unnecessary killing of a being that can suffer and that has a will to live is unethical. Obviously you can do a vegan diet wrong and be unhealthy but that can be said for all diets. Doctors aren't nutritional experts either, unfortunately.

I wish that the animal agriculture industry wasn't subsidised, if the price was driven up I think people would stop eating meat. WHY do omnis continue to not understand what vegans eat =_= Its hard with the turkey farmer who "loves" his birds. I think at the moment with how high the demand is, if his business stops then another business will come in, take over that share of the market and they might be more cruel. Nice one momma!! I wish the title of this movie was Watching Animals, instead of Eating Animals, because then it would mean that the changes we want to see have already happened. I just got through enjoying watching a human eat dinner with family, then a cat enjoying eating raw meat. Since we love mukbang videos, I would be curious to see if watching farm/food animals eat would take off. However, it's sad that very few farm animals are available to be filmed eating their traditional diets, like grazing on grass, rooting in the ground, and eating insects.

I think Natalie has done a stellar job promoting this movie, remaining polite, approachable and non-judgemental on HUGE platforms, which is exactly what veganism needs. Veganism is traditionally identified with screaming, lecturing activists. I think the way this film, and Natalie herself has presented it, will help to open people's minds. I disagree - whilst being polite and diplomatic at this phase of people being aware of Veganism is essential to making it appeal to the masses, we still need to be promoting abolitionist Vegan goals. Promoting new welfarist twaddle about good enslavement and kinder killing just allows people to feel there is a good way to exploit others.

VeganRevolution but she chose to be a vegetarian as a child, chose to become a vegan as an adult, shortly after got pregnant, wasn't used to veganism but still stayed mostly vegan, completely stayed vegetarian, soon after went back to veganism. She's trying - in her own life and to help others, the animals, the planet.

Also, I feel this approach is the best way to convert the majority. Slowly does it, less angry vegan doing restaurant disruptions and more variety of foods.

farmers not knowing what to do about their farms when they don't want to kill the animals is like homebuyers who go into a home that needs a lot of work and can't envision how it COULD look so they don't buy it. It takes vision and effort and some people just haven't looked into it because they just assume there is no other option rather than trying to find one.

The documentary "Earthlings" changed my life. I don't hear it mentioned much anymore, but it's very powerful. Also, I see every vegan youtuber with a cat, like me. I know that the food I feed my cat is based on the suffering of other animals, but I can seem to get anyone (other vegans) to tell me what they are feeding their cats. Do you feed your cat meat? If not, what do you feed them? I would like to end my participation in the use of animal products entirely, but i LOVE my cat and won't give him up. Thank you for you time.

Hi Margaret! Earthlings was a life-changer for Ana as well. She and I actually just got back from the Animal Rights National Conference where we watched the U.S. premiere of Dominion, which is very similar to Earthlings, but with more modern HD footage. Expect a review of that coming soon as well. As for what we feed our cats, we've actually got 2-3 videos about it, you can find them on our channel. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

March 2019 How about a daily discussion about companies like 'Cell Harvesting' which are trying to mass produce a cell of an organ (no harm to any animal) to sell as 'clean meat.' This would really help the (maybe almost one billion?) cat, dog, and other meat eating pets (including zoo animals) that need to eat tons of meat every day. This could also help clean up the Mississippi River and about five states that depend on its water. March 2019

I feel like we have had lots of extreme vegan documentaries which are only watched by vegans for that reason. Because this one comes across as less of an attack on eating meat and more informative of farming practices + Natalie Portman is mainstream, hopefully it will reach a wider audience to make more ethical choices. We can be as extreme as we like in what we say but if people refuse to watch it because extreme then a milder message is a better starting point. Vegan and never going back

To add my two cents on whether this is good or bad for veganism, I wanted to share my experience - in my mid-40s, after reading things like the Omnivore's Dilemma (and after a lifetime of hating vegetarians for being annoying and self righteous), I finally decided that, as an "animal lover," I needed to open my eyes and stop participating in the horrific cruelty that is modern animal agriculture. So, I decided to give up factory farming -- while still thinking that it wasn't so bad to kill animals and that I would be OK with anything grass fed, etc., should it come my way. But once I did that, the bigger picture finally started to sink in, and I realized that it was, in fact, totally possible to not directly participate in killing animals at all. I can't express what a relief that was to my heart and mind, and it led me to being vegan, which I have now been for about 5 years. (Btw, Eating Animals was one of the books I read during this time and I thought it was great.) So, I think this movie has to be overall a good thing - it's less likely to scare people off than a full "you must be vegan" message, and I really think once people start letting any of the reality in, it astronomically increases the chances of letting it all in, like I did - and ultimately becoming vegan.

I can appreciate the film not looking at the murder of animals because seeing all that cruelty can make people turn the movie off, and that's often the only thing meat eaters *do* know about farming, that animals are slaughtered. Stuff like What The Health and Forks Over Knives did way more to push me towards veganism than videos of chicks being macerated.

I guess this film isn't made for vegans, so it's excellent that it will gently entice the absolute anti vegan's in the world, at least it will plant the seed. Not everyone will turn from hard hitting stuff, so all approaches is essential. 2019 is going to be the year of the Vegan movement, I bet within 5 years, it is going to be amazing!! the more products are available within stores and cooking demo's, the more and more people will try. Sometimes as frustrating as it is, just sometimes you need to walk people into veganism gently in a positive way. I admire Natalie for doing this film, as much as I wish EVERYONE was vegan now.

I wonder if Natalie Portman's softly softly approach may be because she thinks she'll get more progress with people if she doesn't behave like she's judging them or if she doesn't expect them to make radical change straight away.

6:30 A possible alternative for those fowl farmer who love so much their birds could be, instead of slaughtering their animals as they grow up let them stay alive until they die of natural causes. Granted, this would notably increase the cost of producing such meat, but the point of that meat from "humanely" raised animals isn't to offer a cheap, or even a high quality meat product, but to supply the animal abuse-aware meat consumer with a product in line with their beliefs. Instead of acting as surrogate predators they would become scavengers. This would probably require of a change in the regulations imposed to meat commercialisation, since it isn't usually allowed to sell meat of farm animals that weren't killed in a slaughterhouse for human consumption. There's that widespread taboo against eating meat from old and/or sick animals, even though in the wild most of the meat consumed by carnivores comes from old and sick animals or animals killed of natural causes (most predators are also facultative scavengers).

That last part is really important! I've been wanting to go vegan since I was in middle school but it took a while to really get to the tipping point and commit to it. I would say a lot of meat eaters are very closed minded and say that even mentioning personal responsibility regarding food choices is "pushing an agenda", maybe this doc is a good entry way. Even people committing to reducitarianism or ONLY 'humane' local meat is a step in the right direction, once they are open to the idea of personal responsibility in this aspect...maybe they go vegan?

Okay, I need to see this documentary. Before I went vegan no vegan documentary was helpful because I found them too preachy. If this is something inbetween.. like anti-factory farm but with an optional vegan options, this might be perfect to show my partner, because he is as sceptical as I was before I went vegan, so this sounds good? I hope it is like what I think it seems from this review, because it might be an easier documentary to swallow.
