You said that almost 1/3 of Finnish people "also speak Swedish". Where did you get this statistic from? About 5% of Finns speak, or claim to speak, Swedish as their mother tongue, but other than that, Swedish proficiency is quite poor in practice. Many Finns know SOME Swedish, because it is being shoved down their throats in schools (despite most Finns being against it based on all possible polls). But in reality, the need for Swedish is minimal and the proficiency is quite poor in general. Speaking of happiness, I doubt that Helsinki downtown is really the best place to find the roots of Finnish happiness... I would recommend exploring Finland a bit deeper. PS. Salmon roll

Hey, Only 5 % speak Swedish as their first language but quide was right. About 1/3 speak Swedish. Basic skill of Swedish is mandatory if you want to study in university or be an civil servant. It is similar with Swedish speakers. They have to study Finnish. Åland islands are exepted from that but still I know people from there who have learned Finnish.
@joojoojeejee6058
7 ай бұрын
@kallekonttinen1738 That's a politically motivated half-truth. Yes you have to pass some exams to complete your studies, I also did, but that has absolutely nothing to do with actually being able to speak or understand the language almost AT ALL (especially several years/decades later). 1/3 of Finns certainly DO NOT speak even basic Swedish. They might be able to understand a little bit and form a couple of sentences, but that's a far cry from actually being anywhere near proficient. Most Finns don't need Swedish for ANYTHING in their WHOLE LIVES (me and basically everybody I know included), so why and how could they understand it... Swedish is not needed even when visiting Sweden, everybody there speaks excellent English.

I haven't spent long enough in Scandinavia in general but one thing I do find is that the people are polite enough but quite aloof and not so welcoming, if anyone from anywhere in the world walks into a British or Irish pub people generally take an interest in them and ask where they're from and strike up a conversation, I have experienced similar in Germany and Holland but rarely in Scandinavia.

I believe you are right in a way. And maybe also mistaken on the otherhand. It's more about our culture and the personal space again, as we also tend to give your space to you, which means not to start chatting or asking questions. It might even be considered rude if people would immediately start asking who you are and where from. We'd interpretate it as questioning if the person entering has a right to be there, it would feel like having a background check of the person and validating the presence. Chatting just for chatting is not so much in our nature, as you may have noticed we do embrace the silence 😄 Being in silence is completely normal to us, which might lead to wrong conclusions of us not being welcoming towards someone. We just like the silence and we don't see it as awkward or impolite 😄 That's just the way we are 😊 Especially us Finns.
