Oh, also re. showering; as per my "brag" comment re. our tiny bathroom previously; we HAVE got a shower (again; tiny but apparently good), not used it once. Like you; very happy to wash by the sink. Basically we fill up the kettle for our morning tea, small amount left over goes into the bathroom sink mixed with cold to desired temperature, nice bit of soap/shower gel and "flanel" (how do you spell that??) et voila! We over-estimate what we need, don't we? (I do so love our powerful shower at home, though, but no; do not need it!).

I'm sooooo glad you talked about the 'good old fashioned strip wash'. I feel like I've read a tonne of online shower or no shower debates where it's like people can't image being hygienic without a shower. I'm a child of the 80s, which isn't all that long ago and home and away a stand up wash was simply a normal practice (at the time because most houses only had a bath and, so I was lead to believe, most boilers couldn't practically or economically supply enough water for everyone one in the house to have a daily bath). I'm amazed our collective memories are so short. And staggered how many people advocate disposal baby wipes as a shower alternative. In fact from the conversations I've had with people on the topic (of which there have been surprisingly many) I'm just baffled so few have applied a little bit of creative thinking about the possibilities of a bowl of water, a cloth and some soap. It was recently a practice so ubiquitous families had pet names for it. I know my friend Liz's family called it a 'pits and bits wash'. My mum insisted on calling it a 'foot, face and fanny wash', which was less shareable at school.
@campervibe
3 жыл бұрын
😂🤣😂 I've heard foot, face and fanny wash before lol! I think anyone over the age of 30bprobably grew up using the flannel method at some point, but yeh you're right, everyone seems to have forgotten. We are so wasteful now, a lot of households are 4 people, 4 showers/baths a day is a huge consumption of water! When a flannel wash is often good enough! Thanks for the comment 😁😁👍

Have been looking at A/T tyres myself. Switched to 16” Steelies as there are more choice, still haven’t found what I’m looking for. May buy a set of Load rated alloys with BF tyres. One thing I am aware of it A/T Tyres are more cosmetic that practical so don’t expect A/T’s to significantly improve off road grip, my mate recently got stuck on a Grass area where as I drove straight off 😂 All Season tyres are worth looking at, Michalin Cross Climate get great reviews but are silly money. Keep Safe, enjoy your trip and keep an eye on latest news as it looks like Europe is returning to some kind of Lockdown

True about ya skin emily...we have our own natural oils...always had ole fashioned strip wash..never had a shower in any of my vans,less water! i made my awning out of heavy duty camo tarp, and i sewed the cord stuff you can buy from caravan place and i have the plastic strip that slides onto the edge where my roof fits onto van...and then 2 adjustable poles from caravan place again and then rope them down 2 ropes on each side off at opposite angles...and with stood quite alot of weather..ace for gatherings/partys and when i do the festivals..still have it yrs on.... :) my vans the xlw base..jumbo transit...the only thing thats more difficult PARKING ..doesnt fit in any places, but had the van 13yrs...and you get to know where ya can park/..great vid guys... :) love the music you play too....end was lovely song !

In Spain, the van must be re-registered...a long, long process where everything must be documented and approved by an authorized company. Gas and solar installations must also be approved by an authorized company. 50/100 pages of documentation. If the van is over 10 years old, it must be approved twice a year.

We had our final van wieging couple of weeks ago. Citroen Relay L3 2016 with full shower, usual top cupboards and full size 60 cm deep kitchen cupboards, hot water boiler, chinese diesel heater, full tank diesel, under counter fridge freezer, 2 x 120Ah AGMS, full water 65 litres main tank, 10L jerry, 19kg of propane, heavy toolbox, drill and other bits with 2 adults = 3080 KG yippee!! i was so happy as i thought we was a lot heavier. So we basically got a 400kg payload for everything else. food, clothes, camping toys, Never going to need that much unless i buy a jet ski ! Now i was careful on the build the shower and bulkhead is made from 3.6mm ply with pvc panels, most of the cupboards panels backs partitions etc only thin ply, white gloss PVC panel ceiling, 13mm TG oak effect floor, 8mm pine TG walls from B & Q. The bed 4ft double sits on 2 Unistrut beams. All the stuff in the garage water tanks, gas locker etc ply lined, 2 full size solar panels 260w each on roof also sat on 2 unistrut beams.... Hopes this helps other van builders.

Obviously, your van plan has brought you joy. Well done. 👍 An affordable and attractive alternative to an awning is a shade sail. Unlike an awning, shade sails are multipurpose (a van life rule) . Not only can you use it like an awning (need to buy poles) , you can use it to cover the windshield in hot weather, keep the van cooler by hanging it down the side of the van facing the sun, use it as a ground sheet and store it under your mattress, which will help aerate the underside.

Ahh the flannel wash, or as my Nan used to call it "A cat lick and a promise". I once listened to the lovely Mathew Parris on Desert island discs and he said he stopped using shampoo completely and only used soap on the er 'grimy bits' and after a couple of weeks nobody could tell the difference. When I told a colleague who was a dermatology registrar she said she wished everyone did the same, water is perfectly adequate for most things. (mind you. She also believed the gin cured most common illnesses and Micheal MacIntire was funny, so make of that what you will)

@@campervibe No arguing there! 😆 One thing that might be worth mentioning is with the weight of the van if it's near the limit it might be worth checking what the weight is on each axel, as that's what police in the UK can get you with. It's different weight limits on the two axels usually 👍 Enjoy your trip! 😁

I swear by a compost toilet. We had a chemical one last year and touring Europe last year was a pain only because we had to find places to empty the toilet. With the compost/separating toilet we can be off grid for much longer. Best change we ever did 👍🐾🐾👫🚛

SO agree with toilet in Van; we have a smaller Van I think (old Peugeot Boxer Autosleeper Symbol - LOVE her!), but a proper, albeit tiny, bathroom (so posh), and I love having the privacy of the toilet, especially great during "lockdown". And the bathroom door folds out into part of the kitchen, so when you close the curtains you have a large private space (put Bose (speaker) on!!) and I have a great start to the day. Puf, is lockdown over yet, want my Van baaaack! Snif.

When in Spain, I know we weren't supposed to put anything on the ground. If you buy a wind-out awning and fit the matching sockets on the side of the van, you put the feet into these and avoid the issue. I do have a great photo of my wife sat on a chair beneath a "no sitting" sign in Spain :) Great video ladies and AJ. For internal CCTV I put one of those cheap (like £25) USB powered Neos cameras that John showed once. They have good night vision and alert me on my phone to movement. I bought one for my niece for dog watching too.

Brilliant job - well done! Hopefully you'll soon have your van back on the road. I really like the raised floor by the swivel seats - we're both 'short of leg' (😊), so that's something I'll look at for our van. I had a question please. Where did you get long floor mats? We've bought Turtle mats before, but they're usually more square. Thanks! Paul

I’ve heard the vapour barrier is the thing that causes the crap phone signal inside, compared to the external antenna. I’m desperately trying to find a workaround without having to splash the cash on the antenna. Maybe should have gone with a plastic barrier rather than foil....
@campervibe
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I'm sure the foil, and the matal skin of the van almost certainly affect the WiFi signal in the van. An antenna will definitely help with that, there are some much cheaper options out there. We have had good signal most of the time inside the van tho just on our phones. I think it's the more remote areas where the antenna comes in useful. I think it all depends on where you go and what your needs are.

Hi, we use winter tires all year round. Just because we are obligated to use them during winter in Sweden and at the speeds we drive it's no problem to keep them on year round. Second thing is that you can use a mobile phone to setup a surveillance in the van. Check out the app Alfred Home or something like that. You already have wifi so this should probably work.
