Having been exhausted by Game 6, surely Nepo's best strategy was to play very conservatively to get draws up to the rest day. Having recovered a bit, then he could have gone all out with the white pieces on Tuesday. Choosing the drawish Petrov Defence, rather than say a fighting Sicilian, was consistent with this approach. However, Nepo's innate optimism seems to have got the better of him and he tried to win a slightly inferior position. What a terrible shame for him.
@jordanious7711
2 жыл бұрын
i think the issue is more that he knows he needs a win and is trying too hard to avoid drawn positions. If Nepo had won game 6 with his best strat he could have played conservative and the opposite could be happening right now with Magnus trying too hard to win. Unfortunately for Nepo he lost game 6 and Magnus is simply too consistent and well prepared to give up any sort of advantage.

Every mind has his breaking point, and for Ian was game 6. The champion is Magnus because he can manage the stress and is a true prodigy. Maybe Magnus will lose the title when he is 40 years old and a new prodigy cames to town, like it was between Kasparov and Karpov.
@riyaadrhoda3990

In your opinion Hikaru if I may ask, what gives Magnus the edge? Is it his determination and fighting spirit as we saw in game 6 where he refused to give up and turn a drawn game into a win even if it took 136 moves. Some speak about the Magnus effect where players just have that psychological block when playing him and they often blunder in positions which they normally wouldn't when playing others?
@martinpaddle
2 жыл бұрын
it's like in tennis, the difference between really good players and the GOATs is consistency. Basically, he keeps his form and missed chances don't seem to affect him much mentally. For many players, their form and ability to accurately evaluate positions fluctuates based on emotions, frustration, and so on.
@iamthedave3
2 жыл бұрын
Most of the pros say that Magnus's endgame resilience is his biggest (or maybe most unique) advantage. There's so many examples of everyone going 'this is a draw' and Magnus just troll facing and declaring 'O RLY' and then forcing a resignation after forty moves. I think Hikaru's said he considers his creativity to be his biggest edge, that he has this annoying ability to squeeze something out of positions that look dry, or somehow make them stressful and at least create a situation where a mistake can be made, while being completely safe himself. To be honest, this game's an example of that. Everybody was saying its a well known drawish position, but Magnus threw out a couple of unusual moves like the knight move, just to see what would happen.
@Auzzie015
2 жыл бұрын
@@iamthedave3 I think the term for that annoying ability was described as 'nettlesomeness', or how creative his moves are which pressure opponents into mistakes.
@eragon78
2 жыл бұрын
@@iamthedave3 Game 6 was the same as well. All the way up until like move 130, it was a table base Draw for Nepo. One slight miscalculation later, and suddenly Magnus is winning and Nepo resigns 9 moves later. Magnus just has this innate ability to squeeze a win out of a draw like an engine. Even when you know its a draw, you make some seemingly harmless move and it ends up being a mistake and all of a sudden magnus is winning.
@ernstgottschalk8023

I once heard a GM say if you want to be a great chess player, play the opening by the book, the middle game like a magician, and the endgame like Carlsen. Magnus Carlsen is the undisputed master of the endgame. No matter how hard you fight throughout the entire game, he will take you to the deep waters and drown you. I think most GM's just can't cope with that, it is the realisation that the longer a game goes on, and the more pieces you trade, the deeper you go in to his territory...

carlsen only needs 2.5 pts out of the last 6 games to retain the title, so yeah, it's over. it's nepo's fault not NOT playing the elementary Bxb4 on moves 35 (he had 2 chances to do this, but missed it, allowing carlsen to connect his rooks on the second rank), which creates the passed a-pawn and ties down carlsen's pieces to the a-pawn, giving nepo a huge advantage and the win. nepo made too many mistakes in the endgame, especially failing to play 72... Bd8 (he blundered with 72... Ba7??), and carlsen exchanged his rook for nepo's f7 pawn and a7 bishop, which creates 2 passed pawns, then nepo's fatal blunder 103... Qe6?? whereas he had to place his queen behind the 2 pawns for any hope of a draw, like carlsen's previous 2 challengers, nepo blew a huge opportunity to take the lead in the world chess championship, and isn't gonna last much longer. as kasparov was still the world champ in his late 30s, i can see magnus holding the throne into his 40s.

Many world champions avoided playing in tournaments, for fear they would look bad. It speaks well of Magnus that he plays in tournaments and in online blitz and bullet events. The thing is, most grandmasters with a rating of 2650+ can have days where they are good enough to beat anyone in the world. So a player in the top 10 can lose to a player in the top 200. The difference with Magnus, Fabiano, Anish, Alireza is that they have those best-in-the-world days all the time, not just once a year.

Maybe Nepo was uncomfortable in admitting that the blunder was becoz of game 6 fatigue becoz then it's like revealing a weakness to your opponent as magnus is very much present in the chess conference.

If Ian comes back from this, it would be even greater than Lebron coming back from 1-3 deficit.
@miked3371

it would be exponentially bette than Lebron's come back. I'm not sure if there is a betting market but i'd imagine it would be 5000/1 to for Ian to win, if not 50000/1

@@miked3371 looking back at history, few things are surprising, but before, there was NEVER a final come back from 3-1 deficit. But coming back from 2 loss in 6 game against Magnus would be also almost mathmetically impossible as Magnus could be the chess GOAT, (aside from probably only kasparov).

At about 20:19 you move the white queen whole explaining blacks perpetual idea. Cant you go d3 check as white and just push the pawn on the dark square one square, and still stay on the 3rd rank so you can push the pawn by the king up one and prevent a perpetual eventually:p while losing no pawns, i think thats a possibility without any counter.

I’m wondering if after king F8, Nepo could have eventually played rook G8, castled queen side and gone for a full on pawn attack. Because Magnus has committed by castling king side?

thanks for the analysis. I really can't get my head around the b5 move. Regardless of it being a tactical blunder, what on earth was its purpose? It looks horribly from a positional standpoint (c6 becomes a backward pawn, a lot of fields get very weak). It just looks "wrong" from almost every conceivable standpoint. Any idea what the strategic idea was?
