The production, vocals, musicianship and lyrics are simply a masterclass. From a debut album. Recorded in a basement. Truly a touchstone of all rock history. R.I.P. Brad Delp.

Brad Delp was the lead singer and Tom Scholz played every instrument on the album. Jim Masdea did play on a song or two on drums. He had been in a band with Scholz before hand and had collaborated with him. Scholz tricked Epic records. They got signed and brought the rest of the band out to record the album. Scholz went back to his studio and kept reworking the demos. The final album was what Scholz created in his studio and not the one Epic recorded in their studio. Scholz was NOTORIOUS for being a perfectionist. An interview with Masdea said the album was started in the early 70's and finally completed in the mid-70;s. With the exception of the follow up album, Don't Look Back, which the record company rushed, came out two years later. Scholz was not someone to be rushed if you look at the release dates. Boston, Boston 1976 Boston, Don't Look Back 1978 Boston, Third Stage 1986 Boston, Walk On 1994 Boston, Corporate America 2002 Boston, Life, Love & Hope 2013

This was the first song on their stellar 1976 debut album. Every song had a lot of radio time, which is unusual for something that's not a greatest hits album. It was the best selling album, ever, at that time. Not only did it cement Boston in the annuals of rock history, it paved the way for other hard rock bands. At the time, mid-70's, record labels were only interested in releasing disco music. But the producer, John Boylan, and Tom Scholz hatched a plan, they sent a group to Californa to record at the label's studio, then secretly replaced those recordings with what was recorded in Tom's basement. When the album went gold in just weeks, record label's could no longer ignore the hard rock genre anymore.

I've been a BOSTON fan since they came out in '75 with the self titled album, which became the "Largest selling DEBUT Album od ALL-Time" !! One person, Tom Scholz (lead guitar), wrote and performed all instruments and recorded this in his basement, in Weymouth, MA - not in a studio. He engineered and mixed it himself and went out to the record companies and sold it himself !! He did get Brad Delp to sing - but all the rest was Scholz. He didn't pull a band together until he realized he needed to start touring. He is a freaking genius - and an MIT-educated mechanical engineer.

Boston was undoubtedly a rock band, yet they had crossover appeal i.e. pop rock. They got airplay on both AM & FM radio in the 70s. You'll notice most male rockers from the 70s had really long hair so they would grow out this awesome mustaches and beards so as to not be mistake for a female. Yes that was a common thing if you weren't trying to be androgynous like 70s David Bowie, and the New York Dolls.

Guys, I truly love your appreciation for older musicians and music. You guys would truly love to see Dire Straits Sultans of Swing, Alchemy Live. Here's the link to it. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mYaXn6xvn4xzp44si=kPCCeGmCIm9_IrH6 Mark Knopfler is the lead guitarist. He's actually left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different from other guitar players. He also couldn't read music. His style of playing is what is known as the banjo roll. He doesn't use a pick. He plays by plucking the strings with the tips of his first 3 fingers and thumb. It's a 11 minute video, with over 6 minutes of amazing solos from all of the band. Terry Williams was on drums and it was the first time his father got to see him perfom live and they had to carry the drum kit out on a stretcher! Check it out guys. The song is from their first album in 1978 and this performance was in '83, and the song is a true story Mark experienced in London at a dive bar watching this crappy band.
