How to decide a good moment for cutting these lovely fruits, for storing through winter and to eat at any time then, or indeed now.
I show you three varieties, Butternut, Crown Prince, and Red or Uchiki Kuri. They are are ready at different times.
I play snowboard or stone on the maturing fruits because their skin is so hard.
This is my no dig gardening Somerset UK.
The ground they are growing in was weedy pasture six months ago. We placed 7cm/3 in compost on top of the weeds and then the black plastic on top of that, in March.
We made holes through the plastic in late May to transplant these squash, as one month old plants.
It's been a dry summer, and no water has been given to these plants. There is a lot of convolvulus here and we have pulled some, where it grows through the planting holes.
The plastic has made it very easy to succeed with the harvest and also with killing many weeds. We remove the plastic after harvest.
