Not in Melbourne! They were so early on the contactless bandwagon that their readers are now hopelessly outdated. It will probably cost tens of millions to implement.

Just a question.. if there’s no gates can people not pay for their ticket and just go on? Maybe not a big problem in Norway since honestly is a big thing but this wouldn’t work in the us especially since people hop the gate to skip the fare imagine what would happen if there were no gates
@Henoik
Жыл бұрын
@@jakecortez4795 Thank you for asking! Trust is a big thing over here for sure, but we also wouldn't like the feeling of being barred from going where we want to. In the 80s there were massive uproars (yes, really) when the subway system in Oslo put up gates and one-way doors. To answer your question: Yes, there are quite a lot of people skipping the fares, but there are ticket controllers who frequently come on to check if you have paid your fare. That combined with heavy fines for not paying your fare (1150 NOK per person, which roughly translates to 110 USD) makes it up for the lost revenue of people not paying their fares. And that being said, we have heavy fines over here in general, so if you don't prove to be trustworthy, you will be heavily incentivized to conform to society's norms and rules.

You can tap your phone (Samsung pay 2017, Apple pay 2020), your watch (2020) and the octopus card (1997) itself. Octopus payment system has since expanded to be able to use not only on ALL Hong Kong public transportations, but also supermarkets, convenience stores, vending machines and etc. So, why they announced it in New York like it was a new and exciting technology the world has never seen... 🤔👌?

The Hong Kong octopus card was since 1997... If your point is swiping the NY subway card which always failed is the same as octopus card tap and go, then okay... Just FYI, back in 1997 smart phone and apps was almost non-existent to regular people, not like today. So, again, I don't see what it is you want to point out. Finally east European civilization arrived to NYC. I rode the Ukrainian metro years ago and it had this type of ticketing system. Just Apple Pay, no paper ! Glad it’s getting civilized there 🇺🇸

YES!!! Credit card payments make it so much easier as a tourist. It is being progressively rolled out across the bus network where I live in Poland. The trams still don't have it yet. The worst case I visited was Skopje, North Macedonia, where I had to wait thirty minutes at a ticket office, show my passport and entry stamp into the country, then have my photo taken, just to be able to buy a local transit ticket, and the office was closed on evenings and on Sundays.
